reminder Linux doesn't have a single good DE

reminder Linux can't do any of the following professionally:
>3D Modeling (no Zbrush)
>Music Production (no VSTs / no MIDI)
>Video Editing
>Game Development

Attached: klogo-official-lineart_detailed-3000x3000.png (3000x3000, 187K)

Why would you expect a kernel to do any of those things?

this is why linux will never be popular

D Modeling (no Zbrush)
Maya, the most widely used modeling/animation software, is available, among many others.
>>Music Production (no VSTs / no MIDI)
Bitwig is pretty reasonable. Not sure why you're saying no MIDI?
>>Video Editing
Davinici Resolve, Nuke?
>>Game Development
Unity!

If you're looking for something to complain about, point to CAD.

>what is Blender
>what is LMMS

No, it will never (not in near future) be popular because it’s not bundled on Walmart shitbooks and there’s no commercial need for a 3rd desktop OS when people are familiar with Windows and macOS. There’s also no company pushing for GNU/Linux as a consumer product.

None of this is the fault of the kernel or other OS components and this thread doesn’t fix anything.

As far as your claim on desktop environments - GNU/Linux attracts autism and powerusers who are willing to be inconvenienced to learn a better way to use computer systems. Desktop environments go against this by sacrificing efficiency for ease-of-use. Desktop environments imply there is a particular set of software that should be included with every installation. This isn’t how it works for a poweruser, the poweruser has their own set of applications to fit them and their workflow, forced unremovable “apps” are an unused annoyance.

GNU/Linux is damn good for a free as in freedom and free as in beer creation. The best thing about it is you can go make it not-suck by your terms unlike a Windows or macOS installation where you have to live with some decisions made for you.

Maybe GNU/Linux just isn’t for you.

if you think linux is trying to be popular, you really have no idea what you're talking about

Thanks for reminding me OP, it's very important to remember about it and think about it all the time. Awesome post!

bitwig without VSTs is useless. good look getting a bunch of midi devices to play nice with Linux, also.

>LMMS
L M A O

>bitwig without VSTs is useless. good look getting a bunch of midi devices to play nice with Linux, also.
what makes you think you can't get VSTs to work?

VSTs do not work on Linux. You have to hope there is a Linux version (99% of time there is no Linux version).

maya, blender and zbrush work fine
bitwig > anything else. there's also hundreds of other programs
kdenlive, davinci, finalcut, etc all work fine
what doesn't work for game development?

>99% of time there is no Linux version
99% of VSTs are shit anyway.

Vsts are platform agnostic bruh. That's why the format was created.

this is false, do a basic search

>Vsts are platform agnostic
100% wrong, there are windows and mac versions (usually just windows). VSTs are NOT platform agnostic.

VSTs are DAW agnostic but are not operating system agnostic.
Why do Linux lie so much?

>Arbitrary Windows DLLs on other platforms
Nigga please

retard they are fucking DLLs

Why do freetards have to lie?

not sure what you mean by professional, but I'm running blender just fine, and vim + gcc works flawlessly for game development? Intel doesn't even provide drivers on Windows for my iGPU so I literally can't gamedev on it

>game development
>iGPU
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

why wouldn't I target the lowest common denominator?

>"i get a silky smooth 30fps on my 1080ti, i don't know what my users are complaining about!"

are you one of those retards using 1gb ram for your pixel sidescrollers?

I'm doing gamedev on Linux. It's basically the same as doing gamedev on Windows.

It's called programming, they both have text editors.

No windows drivers for your igpu? Wtf are you even using?

>linux can't do professional game dev
download any text editor you degenerate

There are wrappers for Windows VSTs. Similar concept to ndiswrapper

Haswell, it's not even that old

>Music Production
>no VSTs
That is a lie
>no MIDI
That is an even bigger lie
But it also has:
>JACK, the best RT sound server, can also route MIDI signals between programs
>LADSPA, great plugins
>LV2, next-gen plugins
>ng-jackspa, a way of exposing LADSPA plugins as standalone clients to JACK
>jalv, same but for LV2
>Helm, an awesome, JACK-compatible Synth
>qTractor, a sequencer with support for JACK, LADSPA LV2 and VST
>Ardour, a music workstation with support for JACK, LADSPA, LV2, VST, Helm integration

linux is a kernel

and that's a good thing.

>3D Modeling (no Zbrush)
>Music Production (no VSTs / no MIDI)
>Video Editing
>Game Development
But user, I have a real job.

I think all the big render firms that render all sorts of movies, from Pixar to WB, are powered by Linux.

Every reply after this post is redundant

>(no VSTs / no MIDI)
>3D Modeling
>Video Editing
>????

Moron /v/irgin that has no clue about game dev detected

Reminder that all of those things you listed have little or no use for many of us here.

>>Music Production (no VSTs / no MIDI)
Bitwig Studio. It can be installed on any distribution given that you have dpkg (even on Fedora!)

I think that the bundling of Windows with hardware is secondary to the fact that Microsoft intentionally brainwashes schoolchildren into using Windows.
Same thing applies to mac, but they were less successful at it

Linux wasn't really usable since few years ago as desktop.
Powerusers can use Windows or MacOS too if they like.
Been using Windows to program and reverse engineer for ages not sure what is wrong with the OS itself.

>reminder Linux doesn't have a single good DE
Picrelated is pretty good. XFCE is good too.
>3D Modeling (no Zbrush)
There are proprietary and free software available for GNU/Linux
>Video Editing
There are proprietary and free software available for GNU/Linux
>Game Development
It is possible.

yes it can
blender is rapidly becoming the best modelling package, it's already superior to maya and 3ds in many ways, its sculpting abilities are almost on par with zbrush

lmms for music production is decent

video editing is still a bit crappy, openshot is full of bugs

unity works on linux, so does unreal engine

GNOME is way better

Not a real argument. Fuck off to desktop threads pleb

>using a DE

Reminder Linux is a kernel.
Reminder OP is a faggot.

Linux can do all those things, if people make programs capable of doing it. You shills push this narrative as if it's the fault of the OS itself. It's perfectly capable of running any program that's designed for it. If you want to blame someone, blame the god damn software developers.

Linux is a kernel.

>>Music Production (no VSTs / no MIDI)
VSTs works well with Linux, you just too stupid to read a wiki

>>Game Development
dunno for Unreal but Unity is available for Linux

Is Zbrush still used?

reminder Windows can't do any of the following professionally:
>provide server backends
>web development
>data analysis
>numerical simulations

reminder macOS can do all those professionally

windows servers outnumber linux servers 9:1. Why do linux soys have to lie?

>Linux doesn't have a single good DE
XFCE is better in all regards than the Windows or OSX GUI.
the Windows desktop GUI is very rigid, without any built-in way to easily modifying anything. XFCE on the other hand can be customized to look and act almost exactly like the Windows Desktop. The Windows 10 flat design is also hideous.
The OSX desktop design is just awful and makes terrible use of vertical space.
>Linux can't do any of the following professionally
>3D Modelling
There's Blender and a few other programs.
>Music Production
There are a lot of audio tools available for Linux that run on JACK.
>no VSTs
there are plenty of VSTs and plugins. Ardour, for example.
>no MIDI
this is just wrong
>Video Editing
shotcut is pretty good.
>Game Development
Are you retarded? Both Unity and UE4 can be developed on Linux.
it's also really easy to set up your system to build your own engine in OpenGL.

>actually recommending Xfeces

Stopped reading your wall of text there. Go back to your home site, redditor (you actually use reddit.com)

>there are plenty of VSTs and plugins. Ardour, for example.
Ardour is not a VST holy shit

Why are Linux users tech illiterate? It wasn't supposed to be like this.

>I'll just call it Xfeces haha that'll show them

next you'll tell us that Ardour is a VST
oh wait you already did, tech illiterate redditor.

>The OSX desktop design is just awful and makes terrible use of vertical space.
This is how I can tell you've never used it.
