Help anyone? Doing a dual boot
Win10 and Mint
Secure boot is off, fast boot is off, Windose changes boot order every fucking time it starts
Help anyone? Doing a dual boot
Always dual boot with two disks. Never go full retard with one disk.
>Windose changes boot order every fucking time it starts
Only if you keep reinstalling/repairing windows like a retard. Also don't listen to he's a brainlet.
It's on 2 now, Disk 0 is Mint only
>Windose changes boot order every fucking time it starts
What exactly do you mean by this statement? When you reboot the computer does grub come up? Or is it booting directly to windows? Or something else.
Didn't do either. Went to eufi settings, disabled secure and fast, enabled legacy. Installed mint. Have tried restarting from there, exiting and resetting boot order to Ubuntu first, doesn't matter. Grub loads everytime either way. But as soon as I select Windows boot manager to start 10, it changes everything back
It works fine, until selecting Windows from Grub menu. Then everything changes back in eufi and bios
>Then everything changes back
Is it an HP, user?
What I did back then was using easy bcd to restore windows boot after installing mint. But I was using win7 at that time, not 10, so idk if it'll work the same.
What does your partition scheme look like? Have you updated your GRUB with grub-mkconfig yet? What's the output when you type efibootmgr in a terminal?
Yeah, it is user.. It works on other pc, but the HP is forcing boot from windows it looks like. It was simple instal, alongside. So disk ) is just Boot and home. Looks like this is an HP thing
No I haven't. I'd have to leave this environment and force bios back. On win now
Actually forget what I said in the last comment user. Just a screenshot of `sudo fdisk -l` and `sudo efibootmgr` would be enough.
I tried this last time, but fast boot was on. Do you guys think this will fix now? bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi
Two issues with HPs.
1) They don't use a standard UEFI implementation.
2) They use custom firmware that will only boot to Windows.
What does that mean for you. Because of the wacky UEFI many HP machines cannot boot to USBs or other devices. My machine can boot from the DVD that came with it but that is it. And because of the firmware, it will always boot to windows.
I get around the issues by using a program called rEFInd. If I want to boot to my linux distro, I boot from a dvd with that iso on it. It sucks. I will never make the mistake of buying an HP again. I have a bunch of links I saved while trying to solve/understand the issue. If you like I could go through them and post them.
Alright guys, thanks for the help. I'm gonna bcedit, reset everything again, and look what the output is for efibootmgr is. I'll come back and update. Will take a little while
Thanks user. Here is a link I just found, going to try the suggestions here, and a bcedit. I'll be back butto update. It is HP like you said. The toshiba and even Sony works fine
Forgot link ubuntuforums.org
>bcedit
I can tell you right now, it will only be a temp solution. The HP firmware will overwrite any changes you make. The only solutions I have read about are:
1) If the bios allows you to select which efi file to boot from.
2) Remove windows competely, then install linux then re-install windows.
3) Use the rEFInd pain in the ass hack I use.
Haha! I spend many hours reading the posts by OldFred. Looks like you are heading in the same direction I was. Hopefully you get it working. Look like the bcdedit worked in that case. I have read how after an update the firmware overwrites it again. But hopefully it works for you.
Good luck.
>bcdedit
Btw don't ever use this on a UEFI partition scheme. It usually just causes more trouble than it's worth in dual boot systems since it was designed for MBR systems.
I'm dual booting Arch Linux+Win10 on my HP Pavilion desktop atm just fine. Grub on GPT+UEFI never gets overwritten for me.
The edit did take this time guys. Yeah, I know it will be temporary, until update runs. Hopefully that is only with occasional updates. Windows is strictly for gaming, I just copied the edit to clipboard and will use it again if it overwrites I guess. Time to go to asus and start a new build. Thank you a ton Anons!
You're a lucky user I suppose. I have 3 HPs. Just installed on another one, same damn thing. this time on a single drive
The old one will work fine I'm sure, no uefi
Thanks guys. I'm heading your warning. When I get time, I'm gonna install fresh from non OEM disk and see what happens.
Fuck, I feel like a brainlet for forgetting about this guide and even though it was written for HP machines specifically, it's also extremely helpful and just as applicable for non-HP machines as well. Super late reply but I hope you see this OP, so you can use it for future reference: askubuntu.com
