Why do you still use this old pile of shit known as vim Jow Forums?

Why do you still use this old pile of shit known as vim Jow Forums?
We're not living in the 1990s anymore
Just let it die already, gramps

Shit no, I use vi

>not using ed, the standard text editor

Attached: 1515028171325.png (455x395, 448K)

cat exists

Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED
AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS
BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN
SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless
help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!!
Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED!
ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

TEXT EDITOR.

When IBM, in its ever-present omnipotence, needed to base their
"edlin" on a UNIX standard, did they mimic vi? No. Emacs? Surely
you jest. They chose the most karmic editor of all. The standard.

Ed is for those who can *remember* what they are working on. If you
are an idiot, you should use Emacs. If you are an Emacs, you should
not be vi. If you use ED, you are on THE PATH TO REDEMPTION. THE
SO-CALLED "VISUAL" EDITORS HAVE BEEN PLACED HERE BY ED TO TEMPT THE
FAITHLESS. DO NOT GIVE IN!!! THE MIGHTY ED HAS SPOKEN!!!

real h4xx0rs use ed

has anybody mentioned ed yet?

>be me
>be working first programming job in ontario
>mostly maintaining several C, PHP, Perl & Python projects
>development works in the same office as IT
>talk to IT regularly
>sysadmin is a former programmer
>old school kind of guy, around 50
>5 monitors, one always streaming shows from his external drive
>a few of us talking about our work environments one day
>he points at me and jokes that he thought i wouldn't be able to use linux over ssh with no gui
>tell him i'm comfortable with cli
>tells me the last programmer in my position didn't know how to use it with no gui
>asks me what editor i use
>vim
>he laughs
>"i don't get why you kids use that bloated shit when we have vi"
>mfw

Did you forget a face user

In my experience, most OSes don't actually distinguish between vim and vi, they just open vim whenever you try to use either.

t. it just werks ubuntu user

You have to explicitly install ''''vi'''' (quotes because its usually a vi clone like bvi)

>bvi
nvi*

i use it because not using it makes editing text slow and tedious.

i think its autism, but not sure

Fedora and CentOS differenciates them. I think CentOS doesn't even come with vim pre-installed.

Real talk does anybody find themselves using vim shortcuts when posting on Jow Forums? I keep trying to type b cw whenever I spell something wrong.

I am pretty sure that if I relinked vim to vi on all of our servers noone would notice, even though all use vim, noone actually uses anything thats not in vi

not on Jow Forums, but i do find myself deleting a lot of shit in SQL management studio because it doesn't have vim keybinds and my other environments/editors do.

h-how can i get better at vim

I don't, I use emacs with vim keybindings a la evil-mode

>open source
>clone
What did he mean by this?

learn the basics with vimtutor, then start using vim for your regular tasks a little bit every day

>vimtutor
>get used to the basics
>pick a new feature, key combo, etc
>really focus on trying to use it for a week
>when done, pick a new one, repeat.

>Why do you still use this old pile of shit known as vim Jow Forums?
So I can go to job interviews and say I use vim and see nods of approval.
Other than that I use sublimetext

i use my own compiled version with no display. it beeps errors in morse code so it forces me to be accurate

I'm using "vis"

The original vi wasn't open source until the early 2000s

>not maintaining 30 thousand line files with cat and echo
fucking retards I swear.

>vim
>not using a not retarded text editor like nano
gg

>Using a text editor with absolutely 0 features meant for editing config files
What sort of thing did you mean by this?

>needing other features than editing the text
I bet you also use Eclipse for making Java programs to download gay porn automatically from the internet

Nice copy-pasta user

Why would you press that instead of just ctrl+w

>needing other features than editing text
Sorry I forgot to tell you I do more than fizzbuzz. Its understandable and I see how you could make that mistake if you're a babby like yourself.

>start binding my most-used build/test-run commands based on file with autocmd
>start using and customizing the quickfix window
>feel like a wizard with how fast my edit-compile-test cycle goes

yes i know ides can do the same thing, leeme alone

I use vim,
so that I can feel something,

instead of nothing.:wq

Using vim to edit text is one of few thing I can enjoy from my job.

I've pressed ESC and closed the quick reply window after typing a post multiple times

>type up well reasoned and long post to someone who is shitposting just for shitposting
>press ESC to exit insert mode
>quick reply window closes
>close thread, it wasn't worth replying to anyways.
