emacs is not a text editor

ed is the standard editor

nano is a perfectly acceptable basic text editor. I've completely forgotten how ed works, beyond being useless.

First going on a rant against the media and now arguing editors on Twitter? Elon is slipping

It does the job and then some

Nano is the best tool for quickly editing configuration files, I'm not using fucking Vim or Emacs for basic Linux maintenance.

based elon

nano is comfy as fuck.

tfw Ironically the only code fragment that survives great emp+thermobaric world war of 2200

When I log into my Xenix system with my 110 baud teletype, both vi
*and* Emacs are just too damn slow. They print useless messages like,
'C-h for help' and '"foo" File is read only'. So I use the editor
that doesn't waste my VALUABLE time.

Ed, man! !man ed

ED(1) UNIX Programmer's Manual ED(1)

NAME
ed - text editor

SYNOPSIS
ed [ - ] [ -x ] [ name ]
DESCRIPTION
Ed is the standard text editor.
---

Computer Scientists love ed, not just because it comes first
alphabetically, but because it's the standard. Everyone else loves ed
because it's ED!

"Ed is the standard text editor."

And ed doesn't waste space on my Timex Sinclair. Just look:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 24 Oct 29 1929 /bin/ed
-rwxr-xr-t 4 root 1310720 Jan 1 1970 /usr/ucb/vi
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root 5.89824e37 Oct 22 1990 /usr/bin/emacs

Of course, on the system *I* administrate, vi is symlinked to ed.
Emacs has been replaced by a shell script which 1) Generates a syslog
message at level LOG_EMERG; 2) reduces the user's disk quota by 100K;
and 3) RUNS ED!!!!!!

"Ed is the standard text editor."

Let's look at a typical novice's session with the mighty ed:

golem> ed

?
help
?
?
?
quit
?
exit
?
bye
?
hello?
?
eat flaming death
?
^C
?
^C
?
^D
?

---
Note the consistent user interface and error reportage. Ed is
generous enough to flag errors, yet prudent enough not to overwhelm
the novice with verbosity.

"Ed is the standard text editor."

Ed, the greatest WYGIWYG editor of all.

ED IS THE TRUE PATH TO NIRVANA! ED HAS BEEN THE CHOICE OF EDUCATED
AND IGNORANT ALIKE FOR CENTURIES! ED WILL NOT CORRUPT YOUR PRECIOUS
BODILY FLUIDS!! ED IS THE STANDARD TEXT EDITOR! ED MAKES THE SUN
SHINE AND THE BIRDS SING AND THE GRASS GREEN!!

When I use an editor, I don't want eight extra KILOBYTES of worthless
help screens and cursor positioning code! I just want an EDitor!!
Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!! ED!
ED! ED IS THE STANDARD!!!

TEXT EDITOR.

?

true. but anyone who puts it in their bio *is* a retarded fagget

her bio is actually nanotech, not the GNU nano text editor

>use VIM for first time
>can't exit program

>An infinite number of monkeys typing into GNU emacs would never make a good program.

>can't greentext

What does Jow Forums think about micro, then?

>he doesn't use nano-tiny

Quite a long pasta amirite?

>Gets rekt by Elon Musk
Guess that guy is never going to get hired anywhere good again

It was a chick and she's literally a nano-biologist. Musk is a fucking retard.

>2200
Swapped a few digits there, buddy.

>eat flaming death
EIGHT EXTRA KILOBYTES

Attached: Untitled2.png (1107x1080, 1.1M)

Ed is clearly the best editor. It can run on literally anything. A potato could run ed.

>nano-biologist
biology implicitly already involves nano-scale structures, so calling yourself a "nano" biologist reeks of pretense.

Your time is only valuable if you're in college or self-employed.

Sasuga Jow Forums. Another amazing thread where everyone will argue about literally nothing.

Except that's an actual field of biology.
>biology implicitly already involves molecules, so calling yourself a "molecular" biologist reeks of pretense.

>use nano
>accidentally insert a character and you don't notice before saving the file
>config is ficked

>use vim
>don't press i until you're ready to write
>safe

i don't think being a nano-whatever is as prestigious as you think it is. basically they're the do-littles of science, they produce nothing of value

as long as you remember to switch the stupid mode back before you try to type commands for the editor. also random things happen if you try to type but forgot to enable the editing mode.

>Swapped a few digits there, buddy.
What? No I didn't.

I use nano for editing configs and such, and an IDE for actually making stuff. I am lazy.

nice excuses, user, really made me think

>use vim
>accidentally delete random lines and characters because of shortcuts in normal mode
>don't know how to undo

nano is the future though

>don't know vim
>use vim

He means 2020.

do you also tell yourself at night that you are not a fat loser?

>he can't whitetext

how is nano better than vi for quick editing?

>can't read the -- INSERT -- line at the bottom
You're the retarded one here

If you're used to ex/vi you can adjust to ed extremely quickly

Nano for simple Bash scripts and Visual Studio Code for C and Python. This is all you need.

Because it's more intuitive without having to read a bloody instruction manual first.

You can learn the basics of vi in 30 minutes or less and the editing capabilities is far more convenient than nano

orrrrrrrrrrr if I'm a lazy fuck who aint got time 4 dat I could just
>nano /path/file
>start typing without having to hit some shit first
>beep boop beep boop
>write out
>close

Attached: 1510905128531.png (300x250, 18K)

Whats wrong with nano? Ships with a lot of distros and is great for what its made for : quick edits.

>You can learn the basics of vi in 30 minutes
Do you understand the ridiculousness of that statement.

vi has a learning curve. You have to mentally adjust to the layout and it takes a tiny bit of time. But you can edit so much quicker in vi compared to nano it isn't funny

>accidentally insert a character

This doesn’t happen unless you’re a lardass with hulking sausage fingers, so it’s a non-issue for normal people.

Just use notepad.exe

Vis has most the power of Vim (no plugins), Sam's regexps and LUA.

>Not a "viitor". Not a "emacsitor". Those aren't even WORDS!!!!
Well, you can use "vis". Then you will get a "visitor"

There is absolutely nothing ridiculous about it. Run vimtutor and you can learn the basics of vim in 30 minutes or so. It doesn't take long to adjust to the modal editing since mostly everything is mnemonic, and the only other thing that takes a bit of getting used to is the hjkl control scheme. Anyone who claims otherwise is either a complete fucking brainlet, or has an irrational fear of vim being difficult and has never tried.

Why would anyone use ex exclusively?

sublime (>*infinity) ed >>>>>>>>>>>> emacs > vi/m >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> pico/nano

Attached: 1380785903437.jpg (452x452, 76K)

It's not because vi is hard, it's because Nano is limited. You can learn Nano style editing in vi in two minutes. That's is two minutes more than Nano itself, but in return there's no skill cap.

It's like how it's easier to learn the kazoo than the piano, so we should all listen to kazoo concertos.

hey dude dont knock the kazoo
you wouldn't know real music if it hit u in the face bitch

Him dating Grimes is really beginning to affect his psyche.

>ed
i get what ed is, i know a lot of oldfags that gre up in the 70s that swear by it, but someone explain to me what makes it so great if its "the most user-hostile editor ever created"

you can learn how to edit a file in vi in 10 seconds
you can never, ever learn how to navigate and edit like vi in nano

this is silly

Too many redpills, he will die before he creates the mars federation because muh jews won't let a planet be outside of their grasp.

Wasn't Musk a Windows fanboy?

nano is the best tool. normies just don't understand the beauty of that editor, they prefer sublime text or some other hipster shit like vim.

I love that picture.
Can I save it?

Just emulate templeOS inside emacs and talk to god

>nanobiologist
>not microbiologist
I chuckled

I don't get why people are afraid of vi and its variants.
I was curious, studied the basics in about 30 minutes, started off using gvim because things were still a bit rough, but as I started smoothing the edges I ended up moving to vim (currently use spacemacs).
It's fast, comfortable, we don't have nano on our servers, and it's way better than kate or nedit.

>$EDITOR is best for quick edits
Using any editor for quick edits reeks of "self-taught" 2000's era linux user. Find a real Unix guru and learn the command line.

classic

"Nanobiology" doesn't even have a wikipedia page, it's completely bullshit. The actual field is called microbiology.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanobiotechnology

"nanobiotechnology" != "nanobiology"

>Nanobiotechnology, bionanotechnology, and nanobiology are terms that refer to the intersection of nanotechnology and biology.
First sentence on the page, genius

no wiki page = not real

Attached: pretending.jpg (349x642, 26K)

>no wiki page = not real
that means you're not real haha checkmate faggot

>Jow Forums Is so fucking retarded they think the mere mention of something with nano in it is referring to a shitty barebones editor

Attached: 1518652523523.jpg (1826x1795, 218K)

>Jow Forums is so retarded it can't tell a joke thread when it sees one

musk twitter is so based

Attached: 1527508788260.jpg (800x1611, 232K)

so don't SAVE it?
and you should've used more or less if you just want to view it

If you’re worried that you’ve had a security breach use nano, emacs and vi could execute arbitrary commands via fishy config files but nano is pure

Attached: file.png (272x85, 3K)

i use nano because i use dvorak.

>Astropalaeontology

He studies/ is an expert on prehistoric extraterrestial life?

Wow what a special snowflake you are.

>emacs > vim
Try harder.
