Should I?

I'm rocking a stock 3570K with a 1060. GPU holds up fine (1080p 21:9 75hz screen) but I feel like my CPU is running out of juice. BF1 CQ is barely playable at around 40fps no matter what settings.
The i5-8400 seems to be a bloody beast. Pretty sad that I would have to ditch my 32GB DDR3 ram tho.
Ryzen 5 2600 costs exactly the same where I live but I feel like the Intel would be the better choice.
Thoughts?

What motherboard do you have?

The cheapest itx board I could find back then. No OC possible

Both are about equal. Shills on both sides will try and say they're not though.
Pure gaming only the 8400 might just slightly outclass the R5.

if only gaming yeah, i5 8400 is better, but you'll also be locked in on the platform, no overclocking, and a worse stock cooler. 2600 is comparable with 2933mhz RAM, you'll be spending at least 40 extra per 16gb though; i strongly doubt you'll need 32gb if you're just gaming though.

b350 is about the same price as the b360 platform, maybe on average cheaper by 10 or so bucks. 2600 setup will be more power hungry but only by 50-60w. they're pretty comparable setups, 2600 will be kind of more futureproof but I would personally wait til zen 2; i5 8400 if you're desperate for immediate performance.

There is absolutely zero reason to upgrade until Ryzen 3

Unless you got enough money to buy a decent motherboard which will later on allow you to even buy some of the highest end cpus for said socket when things get cheaper or allow you do do decent OCs on the cpu you choose changing whatever you got right now is just dumb. Save some cash and buy a good AM4 mobo then go play with ryzen chips.
Also just google how much the RAM alone will cost you to make a new system.

The ryzen 2600 is significantly better than the 8400.

8400 is future proof when it comes to gaming
nobody is gonna optimize for pooshit

Look at other games. In some cases the 8400 beats a 8600k even for some reason. Also, I'd buy 16 GB of 3000mhz CL15 ram. As for the board, I'd go with a z370m by gigabyte, which comes in at around 80 bucks. I could then add a beafy 8700K in the future.

The 8400 can't use higher than 2666Mhz RAM because it's a locked chip.

Intel CPUs are pozzed so avoid any intel CPU at all costs.

I got a huge boost moving to an 1800X from a 3570K. I can only assume that going to a 2600/2700(X) would be an even better boost. Not to mention that it will perform tremendously better when you're actually running shit in the background.

>8400 beating 8700k
so trustworthy

its one of the best, if not the best source for everything hardware in germany. ofc its not beating the 8700k in every game

4 cores is all you needâ„¢

>in germany
is that supposed to mean something?
no way an 8400 should come out on top in any benchmark

But then I'd have to buy new ram. 1866 for life

it means im german and read german tech sites. duh.

no. better wait for zen2 7nm next year.
just oc your cpu to 4.5GHz

im not spending money on a last gen mobo just to oc

>32GB with an i5
>gaming rig
Why

>he has to pay extra for an overclockable platform on a platform advertised for gaming
oh no no no no
AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAaaaaaa..a.a...*wheezes* ahAHAHAHAHAHA
AHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHEHAAHAHAEEEAAHHHHHHHHH *dry heaving* HAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAeeeAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA

Why did you get a K then?

You should probably just get the best cpu available for your socket then.

>i5-8400

have fun being a threadlet

They never tested these with the 2600 on fast ram and DDR4 @ 3400 though. There are plenty of benchmarks showing the 2600 beating the 8400 on most games once it is tweaked. The 8400 you literally have to buy an expensive motherboard and use the BCLK method to overclock it (and delid and use an expensive cooler)..

Intel Core i5-8400
Gigabyte Z370M D3H
HyperX Predator 16GB [2x8GB 2666MHz DDR4 CL13 XMP DIMM]

BF1 benefits from multiple cores, i have FX8320 and it can get 60fps on 64p cq even tho 3570k probably beats it on other games

OP I agree with this guy
Wait for zen 2 next year. The i-5 and Ryzen are pretty much on par interms of performance. The i-5 will probably run a bit hotter and will need a better cooler. Beyond that their the same for games.
Games are starting to use more threads so Intel might release a CPU with more threads next year so wait for that. AMD will get a pretty big performance boost form the 7nm, also something to wait for.
Pretty much wait for next year

That isn't true. The 8400 can use any RAM speed IF you pair it with a Z370 board. I ran an 8400 with my 3866MHz kit last year without issue in that configuration just by enabling XMP. Memory speed on Intel platforms is limited by the motherboard, not the CPU.

How to spot a shill

A shill would point out that you can't OC 8400 even with BCLK.
