A lot of FOSS projects while being good from a technical perspective really didn't have an "attractive" ui to a lot of people. For a good FOSS project to succeed they need to be very easy to use and have a more modern design. Personally I think this kind of design is bloated/unnecessary and I like more utilitarian design but I have no problem taking this compromise if it means that a lot more of my contacts are on a FOSS communication platform. All this nagging from people to get on Discord and other flavor of the week botnets is really getting on my nerves.

the matrix protocol matters more than riot.im
riot is just some electron webshit. it's okay. it works. matrix is like IRC: the sequel, though, and it has a lot of neat features like end to end encryption and federation. you can even use matrix from weechat. most clients don't fully support all the matrix features yet. seems like riot is kind of the flagship client due to the other ones lagging behind. I'd like to see more command line-friendly stuff if it's going to overtake IRC.
