Microsoft talks about a lot of things. Is there any reason to believe this is actually likely to happen?

they are thinking into buying SUSE Linux too

improvement

bitbucket master race

This would be good because it would encourage open source project to use alternatives, reducing GitHub's capture of the market. It's funny how just a few years ago people couldn't imagine their code not being hosted on GitHub.

I thought all of Jow Forums was using Gitlab since the "Webm for retards" fiasco? All major projects are moving to Gitlab, from Gnome to Mkvtoolnix.

Where does Microsoft's revenue come from nowadays?

Office and Windows still print money as a cashcow. Azure also has huge margins and is fast growing as a third cashcow.

only thing github is useful for is shit fucking programmers that work for companies to solve problems they are too inept to solve.

stop giving your code away for free unless you're already comfy. you think you're doing something altruistic and good, but microsoft and google pajeets and chinks come along and just swipe it for the latest release of X for $299.99

At some point in the near bitter future, we shall migrate there. but for now iZ gArBage.

would love it, the amount of tears from linuxtards would be equivalent to election night

This

Linux is not on github nor are the main Linux components. Only systemd but it can easily move back to freedesktop.
What you'll actually find there is endless shitty JavaScript frameworks.

I know you're just trolling, but at least put some effort into it.

Remember, this is the company that had 10% marketshare with their smartphone OS in Europe due to standardization of hardware and it being smack dab between Android's fragmented and laggy bullcrap and Apple's thorny garden, while being completely obscure in America, yet decided to release all new features in America and then constantly give consumers mixed messages to confuse them, made the OS more like Android and added fragmentation, reduced base requirements for phone hardware and gave us a fuckton of lag, then killed it off.
Instead of, you know, using this fucking money machine.

use self hosted cgit

it makes me feel good when people use my code though

do you think they installed it from pirate bay?

something that gets ignored and no one cares for
>source: china; retroarch; etc.

would rape all three of them ironically :^)

>GitHub lost $66M in nine months of 2016

Why would MS buy this shit

No matter who loses, we win.

What's the point in writing proprietary software then, it'll just get pirated anyway.

invalid comparison
proprietary software is binary only which can easily exploit you regardless if you pay for it or not
gpl'd stuff on github is usually source only and the exploit is at the contributor/s expense not the user

How

Business licenses.

I'll throw this in here because I just know it will rustle some jimmies: BING. Yes, really. Bing is a major success and highly profitable. Yes, really. I realize this raises the obvious question: Who the hell uses Bing? Who knows, I don't, their numbers in terms of both users and revenue shocked me as much as the next guy.

It's not really a huge amount these days but yeah, Microsoft does make some money off Android from patent trolling. They reported something like two billion a year from patent licensing back in 2014.

bing is great for porn

I use a couple of gitlab instances, one of which I set up myself, but I don't think I'd ever use gitlab.com, because their sysadmins are inept.
I guess I should consider moving all repos I had on github to some gitlab instance, it's a shame that repo mirroring is behind a paywall.
theregister.co.uk/2017/02/01/gitlab_data_loss/

It is unironically better than google and so is their translator

when you have most of the market share, you don't need to improve

when you are a small player, you need to be better

Jesus Christ, I need to duckgo this.

just duckit bro

>github.com/torvalds/linux
That's a mirror, not the main repository.

docs.microsoft.com/en-us/style-guide/bias-free-communication
Uhh look again sweaty :)))

You claimed Linux is not on github and you got proven wrong.

Linux development, leaf copy of the source

yes, you're technically right but you're looking at it upside down. The kernel development happens on git.kernel.org/ and that's what matters. Nobody would care or notice if some mirror of it like github went down - it just doesn't matter.

Attached: upside-down-book-reading-dubu.webm (1280x720, 663K)

Which kernel?

Someone is gotta buy Github.

Also it makes sense for microshit to want to buy them. They are trying to make sure every fucking developer on earth uses their tech:

>Made a pretty cool free text editor: VS Code.

>They give you like 1000 usd on free credits for Azure if you are a hobby developer student.

>They even gave us Linux for Windows 10.

THE kernel

Attached: Cheng Xiao (WJSN) - She is so freaking cute ♥.webm (820x720, 2.62M)

All of that is vanity until they release the source code to their main product.

No one remember Codeplex, I presume?

Attached: 1506162443420.png (294x705, 101K)

>sir, they're making fun of our botnet data collection practices on GitHub!
>"Buy them."
>*installs a brigade to shut down any issue discussion*
it really can't go any way other than this

Is there anything inherent about GitHub that devs tend to use it? Like Facebook for social media?

>Is there anything inherent about GitHub that devs tend to use it? Like Facebook for social media?
It's just well known, and lots of projects that you might want to contribute to are hosted there. If you're looking for a job, I'd assume not having a github account would put you at an disadvantage.

I assume it's more popular, so your projects get more attention and 'stars'.
Which is important for resume padding.

So they'll own both of these?

Attached: Atom-VS-Code.png (595x375, 64K)

From
>that's offensive
to
>show bobs and vagene

I'm okay with this

given the fact that they have invested some of their time and resources last couple of years into open source movement, i'd say yes.

Can always find more git hosting, but I'm guessing this will outright kill competing products that Github puts out like Atom.

bing gets the job done
yandex has superior reverse image search, though.

> worlds #1 host for the majority of free software on the internet
> it's a proprietary and monitized private company
WTF? why did GNU allow this to happen?

I actually like github and use it but still, this shit dont make any fucking sense

Ugh, cringe.

on the one hand, GitHub is largely responsible for the rise of the SJW in this field - on the other hand it has been quite a useful tool. I don't think I'd be sad if Microsoft destroyed it as is the most likely outcome.
>rewrite in ASP.NET or C#
>migrate servers to Windows and IIS

How the fuck is github worth billions?

You are aware that Micrsoft is a Platinum™ Member® of the Linux Foundation, yes?

haha

Perhaps because they "own" all of the FOSS projects and therefore can control what is allowed and what isn't from the community. Not to mention the large companies that purchase packages for private projects and individuals that want private projects. In the end they have more control than they should in the FOSS movement.

I actually think that microsoft would improve github just as they made atom look like garbage when vscode came out.

When it comes to language development and making devs feel comfy, they do a good job.

Windows sucks though.

Microsoft will kill it just like they do to everything else.

>All major projects are moving to Gitlab, from Gnome to Mkvtoolnix.
From what i see, only projects which weren't using Github moved to Gitlab. Those were using Github remained unchanged. Like freedesktop are migrating from cgit to Gitlab.
I guess it's because they want to use free software as Github is proprietary.

Jow Forums uses gitgud
Radical FOSS advocates use gitlab
SJW and normies use github

While I've always been resentful against Microsoft for their closed approach in the past, I must say I wouldn't be against MS buying Github. I would foresee some improvements, especially making git more normie so companies are eased into it (especially to replace most of what Atlassian offer in their pro Bitbucket and cie) and make it even more reliable in terms of infrastructure.

There's always GitLab if all else fails, and since Gnome has begun moving to it if there's no major trouble I think it'd be a great thing to happen. I'm surprised at myself saying this, but if they can contribute a bit more to free software in the tools area, I'd be happy.

But Gitgud is just Gitlab free hosting, so technically it's still Gitlab.

>All of that is vanity until they shoot themselves by releasing the source code of their main product

Good. Github needs to die.

And you have to pay for automated testing last I saw, while GitLab offers it with its hosting.

Isn't github open source?
Why not just fork the entire website, change the color and launch Mhub instead of spending 2 billion dollars?

Attached: 7299129-an-handsome-indian-kid-eating-apple-a-day[1].jpg (1300x863, 66K)

>Isn't github open source?
No, it isn't

i'm actually ok with this.

Interesting, did the RMStards finally understand that FOSS isn't always good?

All projects that actually take FOSS seriously aren't host their code on Github though. They either self-host cgit or GitLab

They're buying the users. That's why all these technology acquisitions are huge, they're not buying the technology, they could whip that up themselves in a few weeks, they're buying the users.

>if you don't use my favorite website you're not a REAL developer
lol

Going from
>BT : Update to remove masculine pronouns from README
to

>ok rape u next week
Would be a genuine improvement.
