That's what happens when most of the service is completely free and is incredibly widely used.
It's value is how important of an infrastructure it is to the software development world. It's not great to run as a business.
It was inevitable it would get bought up by a major tech company that has to ability to absorb the money it's hemorrhaging.

It was mostly just bad management though. While it's true that their business model would never make huge money, the popularity of github + the pricing/paid service scheme basically guaranteed a steady stream of revenue all year long. Instead of operating within their means, github hired a shitload of people and bloated their expenses which caused the massive amounts of debt. Fundamentally, github would be cheap as fuck to run and should not require a large staff at all. Fucking moot ran this place while being broke for all these years.
