depends on what you consider "need". I edit video and do a lot of encoding. Funnily enough I only use the most RAM when I'm using my Wacom tablet. I bought RAM when it was like $75-$85 per 16GB kit.

No, 3GiB is more than plenty. This is with entire browser profile in RAM, as well as browser cache. Looking at just 1.5GiB of RAM usage if profile/cache is on-disk with 30+ open tabs.

That depends entirely on what software you're using CAD and GIS use a lot of memory. I believe photoshop is also a hog too but I've never used it because linux. If you want to use an IDE, you're going to use a lot of memory too. 8GB is a fine amount. The biggest question is, "is 16GB necessary." No. It's not. But who really cares? Memory is cheap. Unless you want to be autistic and minimalist, which is totally respectable, but you need to go all the way and not just complain about one thing. Your whole system better be dedicated to a minimalist lifestyle, not just your volatile memory consumption.
