Does anyone else feel the need to completely ditch all their complex rigs and desk battlestations to just opt for the most minimalistic setup possible.

Just like:
>decent laptop
>external hard drive for documents and entertainment
>wireless mouse

Makes things easy as fuck to clean and it covers all of what most people need. Am I alone on this?

Attached: 1111.jpg (1940x1300, 422K)

>external hard drive
Bloat.

>apple everything
kids these days

Ever since I stopped gayming, yes. Pretty much only reason I still even have my desktop is for mining crypto with my cards

Well, that was just for concept. Snagged whatever image on the google search that I could find.

I need at least 6 TB for all the porn I've got. I'm willing to make an exception there.

I have 2TB in a HD alongside a 1TB SSD in my T60 (main machine). I dream of ditching my phone.

>mouse

> External hard drive
> Data hoarder
> kys

What's the problem?

you're not alone

Who are you quoting?

no, I play videogames

I kinda dig that idea. I have a dedicated box full of miscellaneous tech crap and I have a feeling that it's taking up too much bandwidth to hoard.

I wanted the Ubuntu phone. Have a cellphone that turns into a full os that you just plug into a monitor. I'd love a phone that was much thicker for better hardware and more storage that acts as a full fledge os (obviously not for gaming). One device that I have on me at all times that I use for everything. I'd also pay good money for something like this. Phones already had 6/8gb of ram. Make a much faster arm processor that can compete with an i5, 500gb storage, and you got me sold. I'd pay 1,500 easily for something like this.

Yeah I know the feeling. After I lost interest in gaming, my desk got a lot cleaner and gained a ton of space. Now pretty much just consists of my Thinkpad W520, although I still have a wired mouse (fuck batteries, shit's expensive over time and bad for the environment), external hard drives (when in use) as well as my old desktop monitor. But that's pretty much it. I still have my gayming desktop, but I've hooked it up to a TV and more or less just use it as an HTPC. Kind of sad, really, using an i5-4440 and a GTX 650ti to power Chinese cartoons.

>Make a much faster arm processor that can compete with an i5
They have this, it's called the A11

Why not just get a fucking mouse that you can just recharge?

if you go this way, make sure to either:

1) get a monitor and connect it to your laptop
2) put the laptop on a raised surface and connect your own keyboard+mouse to it

I'm saying this because using a laptop on its own is incredibly bad ergonomically.

just use a $40 pi2 and kodi for that. sell ur rig man and start working out.

cant u install debian on android? sounds perfect for this with a mini BT key and mouse and some little stand thing and shove it all in a pocket or pouch.

You're trolling, right? Sure it scores higher than snapdragons on geekbench benchmarks, I don't have an issue saying that, unlike most of g, but as someone who has family who only uses apple products, (well brother and his girlfriend) who always have the newest iPhone, it doesn't fare well after long usage, and the term long usage is used very loosely. Their iPhones don't run as well as my Android from 2015. Sure they get nearly double the battery life / screen on time that I do, but everything runs much better on my phone and faster than theirs. I would not want that in a phone-computer hybrid as it'd just become slow after an hour of decent usage and probably just defeat the purpose of the ability to do so.

Doing this but I also have a bigger secondary screen for movies and an xbox and vita tv just because it was cheap.

I mean unless you need to play in 4k or render huge video files or whatever really a quad core should be enough

>Am I alone on this?
No, but a small formfactor desktop would still be better than full time laptop. You still have standards to uphold user.

Attached: filthynoble.jpg (620x387, 53K)

Doing this ever since i moved out a few years ago.
I stopped gaming so the laptop does everything i need. Plus, i love the portability of it, didn't even realize how shitty it was being tied to the same desk.

>wireless mouse
Of course. Wires piss me off. If there was a wireless laptop charger, i'd be all over that too

Why? It's more expensive than a wired mouse, you need to recharge it (which is annoying), and the rechargeable battery is still going to run flat eventually. The only time when a wireless mouse is acceptable is when you're trying to control the computer from a great distance in a high-traffic area, and risk tripping over wires.

>just use a $40 pi2 and kodi for that
For what reason? I have something that works, has a disc drive, and can contain several hard drives. It's overkill but why get rid of it for something else that fulfills exactly the same function?

>start working out
Way ahead of you there

I wasn't debating the merits of a phone/computer hybrid or the cooling abilities of such a device, I was just saying that there is a mobile ARM chip capable of outperforming an i5. I also find it hard to believe that an Apple A* SoC throttles as badly as you describe, while your 2015-era phone, which is most likely a Snapdragon 808/810/820 oven, does not.

>wireless
>my mouse recharges quickly
>charge lasts fucking weeks before next recharge
>rather replace a rechargeable battery after years than replacing typical batteries frequently

>rather replace a rechargeable battery after years than replacing typical batteries frequently

My question is, what benefit is there from using a wireless mouse over a wired one? Regardless of how frequently the battery needs to be replaced, it still needs to be replaced eventually. It still needs to be recharged. The manufacture of batteries is environmentally destructive in any event, so why make more than are needed? And what benefits are there? A lack of cords? "Aesthetics"? These seem like pretty poor reasons to me and are matters of personal preference in any event.

>A lack of cords? "Aesthetics"?
Yes.

Office online is free

Oh, thank god. Here, fellow minimalist.

>turning it on requires feeling motivated/involved in a project.
>buy minimal spec'd laptop for convenience.
what is wrong with me?

2 chinkpads with wireless mouse, one bigger ssd, other ssd+hdd is all I have. Also old laptop to use as a server for something but fuck knows what I'm gonna do with it.

>Calling it a battlestation
>How autistic can you be

Yes, constantly.

>owning a laptop
No thanks. If I'm programming, I'm at work.

>not programming on your phone
Do you even termux?

Been trying to remove batteries from my house since I've suddenly got an irrational fear of house fires. Also looking at a whole house surge protector, and generally keeping electronics out of the bedroom.

Go for a NAS then.

Some rechargeable mouses use AA batteries, so they work with rechargeable AAs as well. Having 2x2 of them means I can just swap one set out for the other when they get discharged, so I don't have to plug in mouse to charge, and the batteries are usually sold in packs of four anyway.
>muh environment
The fuckers have been going for 10 years and counting, that's like what, 40 batteries over a lifetime if you're lucky? There are worse sources of pollution out there for you to worry about.
>but why would I use wireless mouse?
You said you use your laptop with an external monitor. I do that too, but I have my laptop on a shelf so it doesn't clutter my desktop, but it makes using wired mouses inconvenient.

No, because I need my desktop PC for computationally intensive tasks like converting movies and encrypting stuff, which would take even a day on my laptop.

>just get a pi
>just fuck around with powering one of your old internal drives with an additional PSU, or spend more money on an external hard drive
>just be bottlenecked to 100 mbps when you want to transfer files over LAN
>just waste your time reflashing the SD card when it gets corrupted

>and encrypting stuff

>what is AES-NI

Just buy some laptop that's not 10 years old.

It's called growing up.

hes not quoting he's
>implying
try to keep up

I'd never like to have more tech stuff than I could fit in a suitcase. I exclusively use laptops and I don't play video games so I'm ok there. If I ever did I'd probably jew myself and get a TB3 eGPU.

OP's pic is basically me but replace the MacBook with 5 laptops that are mostly ThinkPads.

>external hard drive for documents and entertainment
Nice redundancy, brainlet. Just get a laptop with a big enough SSD for your documents and media and use an external drive for backups. If, for some reason, you really have a need to hoard terabytes of porn, then build a NAS or something. Not that minimalist, but would serve you better in the long run.
>no external screen
Laptop screens are shit.
>no external keyboard
Laptop keyboards are shit.

>Laptop screens are shit

Things have advanced since your 2009 thinkpad was released you know.

>this

A NAS isn't portable

why the fuck would you need to carry 6TB with you anyway ? Just carry what you need and safely store the rest.

Jeez, I didn't know they can now fit 20+ inch screens on laptops. They must huge.

>don't use external hard drives, it ruins the point
>crowd your desk with a keyboard and monitor tho
absolute state of brainlets

>don't use external hard drives, it ruins the point
I didn't say that, I said it's retarded not to keep backups because >muh minimalism.

>programming on a touchscreen
>termux is for programming

Termux is just a fat ssh client and you know it.

>needing more than an ssh client
>not having millenial thumbs
It's like you want to be deprecated.

Man, I know exactly what you mean. As a student in college I find myself playing video games and watching porn as a coping mechanism for the difficulties and frustrations I experience as a physics major. I need to give up my "gaming rig" because playing games is for children. Hopefully I can discipline myself studying this summer so I can successfully pass my classes next year seeing how I am doing so poorly the quarter. Show me some support bros so we can all make it

Attached: 1528493054768.png (1920x1080, 3.31M)

Same here, minus the wireless mouse. I've not been gaming for like 5 months, thinking of getting rid of my desktop entirely and just getting a Chromebook or something. Not sure if anyone would buy my desktop though, pic related, it's starting to get outdated.

Attached: 2018-06-10_03-10-47.png (797x571, 97K)

I kind of agree, but in reverse. I want my big desktop battlestation to do almost all my computing while I access it remotely via a 2 in 1 laptop shaped terminal that also works as a screen expanding device for my phone (the way the superbook does, but embedding the phone inside the dock somehow) and can switch between being a screen/keyboard for the phone or desktop with one or two key presses.

Unfortunately no such device exists thats exactly like this. You can sorta do it. Sorta. But not exactly and not very smoothly afaik and software just keeps using more resources to do the same stuff.

which is better tho?

>mini tower placed at the side of the desk with wireless mouse and keyboard and decent 1080p monitor
>just a good laptop

Depends on what you're using it for, I don't think you can escape the overheating problems on laptops when it comes to gaming.
Not a gamer? Laptop all the way, for portability, imo.

I play low end games so I need a 1050/1060 at least. 1060 might be overkill idk

I've already got this setup minus the wireless mouse. Literally all I have is a 2012 MacBook Pro, charger, and external hard drive for backup. It's peak comfy because I can work anywhere and my setup will always feel familiar.

all i want to do is watch anime and be comfy, this honestly sounds like my kinda setup.

But it's a 10k mAh anker battery mAh man - it'll give that comp at least 1.5 charge and a 3 charge for the phone

>playing games is for children
Wrong. Not having enough self-control and discipline to play only after your studying and schoolwork is done is for children. Adults practice moderation and live a balanced life.

Then use the fucking thing to setup a porn FTP server with it.. You are minimal, and your porn is ready to go

connected to your network you dumb mong. then it becomes seamless.

>external harddrive
>being such a cheap jew you can't afford $2.99 for unlimited cloud storage

>being hunched over your desk like a goblin squinting to stare at your screen

your speakers are being covered by your monitor dumbass

Don't trust cloud shit with my files, and my eyesight isn't complete shit so I can see just fine sitting in a good position.

>I need at least 6 TB for all the porn I've got.
You have a problem, dude.

Yeah, I don't have nearly as much as I should.

Pic aint mine. i wish my pc was that smol

>Am I alone on this?
Yes. I already am stuck with a laptop workstation for work I wouldn't want to force myself into that for home.

I'm wondering, is Applel the way to go for such a lifestyle?

Nah. My fatarsed case that was on clearance because it was too autistic for even gaymers to buy and two secondhand monitors setup is far too comfy.

there's this app on F-Droid called "USB Mountr" that supposedly exists for this purpose; however, I don't know how to use it myself

As far as ecosystems that actually work, yeah.

a complex all-in-one device is the polar opposite of the minimalism concept

wrong

Doesnt work for me, tried it couple od times.

Its the akward position of laptop screen that kills it for me and I need 2nd monitor. Size doesnt matter, could live with 2x15" but there have to be two.

Usff or itx with two small monitors would be much better.

I did this with buying a chromebook, it's pretty cool for a while, but a few months later i built a custom rig. It's just your desire for new things and change.
Try a new Linux distro or hackintosh and old laptop and use that for a while, it'll pass and no money spent.

I want to, but I still play some games here and there. a laptop + eGPU will probably be my best bet.

I don't think laptops are the best option in this case.

Simply from an ergonomics perspective, it fucking sucks to use a laptop.
A Laptop can never be a desktop replacement. Maybe if you connect a monitor and peripherals, but why have a laptop then in the first place.

I guess if your job requires you to be on the move a lot and you have to work in different places where you can't have a desktop setup everywhere, a laptop makes sense, but that's an exception.

For personal normie usage, i.e. social media, entertainment, ... a smartphone or tablet is probably all you need.

I'm already doing that. I reached a certain age, got fit and healthy, fucked a few vaginas and felt no need to surround myself with junk that just wastes my time like endless Linux distros on shitty outdated hardware with shit battery life.

Apple isn't the only way, you could go the Surface Pro/Book + Pixel way too but I chose 100% Mac for full compatibility.

Attached: 1528514112200.jpg (602x603, 67K)

No. I have never wanted to do this. Not when I was in high school, not when I was in college, not when I was a neet, not when I got a job, not when I moved out. I'm 31 and I still have no desire to live without a desktop with several monitors as my main computing device.

This 100%.
Literally exactly as you said it too

Just waiting for the day when something like this becomes practical.

I'm considering using samsung dex to use as a computer

I have mild OCD and these are one of the things that bother me the most. Is there a cheap solution to being minimalistic with technology? It seems that Apple is the only stable ecosystem that also isn't as bad as Google in terms of privacy. The only problem is it costs a fucking leg.

I've done this. Became sick of my old 16" laptop with a jet engine that required a lot of space to use.
Opted for a tiny Chromebook (Asus C201) with Devuan. Fanless, tiny bliss.
As it happens per OP pic, I do keep it on top of my cutting mat, as /po/lite boy.

Nokia already did that 10 years ago with the N8. Plug your N8 into your display via HDMI, connect your bluetooth keyboard and mouse and away you go

It depends on what you really mean by "minimalistic" and what you need to do with your device(s).

If you just want the /aesthetic/ of an empty desk with few devices, apple is probably the best choice.

If you're a normie, you can probably get away with just a phone/tablet/phablet, maybe a tv to stream to, and a console if you're a gamer.

If you want/have to be productive, be it office work, programming, audio/video/image editing, etc, nothing beats a desktop station with a big monitor and good peripherals. Again, apple is the easiest way to achieve the minimal aesthetic, with an iMac and wireless keyboard, mouse/trackpad. Or other all-in-ones, those are usually expensive as well, so it's more of a choice between macos and win/linux for which road to take.

It comes down to deciding how much work you're willing to do yourself to achieve the minimal setup. You can build a pc with the exact specs you want that's integrated into your desk with custom cables perfectly laid out etc. Or you can buy an all-in-one. Same for software. You can pick the best tool for your specific needs and set up workflows and interfaces and automation to fit everything together. Or you can just use apple/google/microsoft everything.

I agree with pretty much everything here. It would be nice if there was a tablet that can perform phone calls but also be used for productive work; that would be the best solution, I think. I'm curious, what do you personally use (watch, phone, tablet, laptop/desktop, etc)?

I get that "I NEED IT" feeling whenever I think about the dex dock but I do have my reservations about using the phone for long periods of time (practically all my waking hours) without a break.
Fanless ultrabooks also worry me.

My desk consists of a monitor, mouse, keyboard and phone. Nothing else should be on my desk at any point. Thanks autism.

>Does anyone else feel the need to completely ditch all their complex rigs and desk battlestations to just opt for the most minimalistic setup possible.
That's already what I have.
I used to have a huge "battlestation", and after moving a few times, I changed to a Thinkpad and a mouse.

That's it.

STRAY AWAY FROM SOULLESS CONSUMERISM

Too bad Continuum is dead.
Fucking poo at Microsoft.

I guess Apple will copy the idea one day, and everyone will follow.

> Low end games
> Needs 1050

Something looks off

Idk I wanna keep my laptop for a while since it isn't upgradeable.
