I hate open offices like pic related but they're an evil necessity in 2018.

People have become like animals now, they can't even go to work without having to watch degenerate pornography at some point because they're so habituated to getting off. You think I'm joking but even surveys show an alarming number of men doing it. This costs more than a "smoke break" which actually increases performance because nicotine is a cognitive enhancer. Masturbation and sex, dull the mind. Anti dopamine hormone prolactin increases for a few hours after orgasm. I can always tell whenever someone has morning sex or jacks off before work, they can't converse as well and lack spoteniaty. They'll still perform menial tasks but if want them to learn anything or do anything it's worthless.

Oh hey I've been there.

Place in OPs pic is actually pretty good. There are closed offices available along the outside for 1-3 people if you don't want to be in the more open area. And the height of the dividers is just tall enough that you don't get distracted by movement in your peripheral vision but low enough that you can see if someone's in or not; also makes it real easy to jump on in if people are going to go for a walk or go out for lunch.

The problem with offices is people end up fucking off more and it is more expensive to do. Some jobs - namely low level programming gigs common here - you can measure progress directly with some output metrics, but generally companies also need people building relationships for the company and doing all kinds of stuff that isn't easy to measure. On top of that there is the communication factor.

I'm mixed on it, I just got my own office last year but because of my work I need a locking door for security so that's the only reason. It has advantages but I feel more disconnected.

My office is a fucking undemocratic joke. Sales people and top managers get individual office w/sliding glass doors and always the newest Macs and Laptops. Operations scrubs like me sit in an open cattle enclosure with 5 desks mashed into one room, hand me down computers and cheap ass Ikea furniture. I think I;m going to lead a Marxist revolution in my office.

This is actually horrible idea. For some people it's great because they are more productive when they aren't distracted but then you have plenty of employees who are the exact opposite and will be lazy as fuck and get nothing done when no one can see what they are doing.

This is why most businesses only give private offices to respected employees that have been there for awhile and basically know they aren't going to fuck up.

You don't just get some random off the street or straight from college as a director or exec. The difference here is they almost certainly spend years building up trust and respect or have a damn good resume with references to back them up warranting the position and office.

You don't just join a company as a nobody and expect people to give your own room as if you were at home with your parents.
