This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

I'd like them a lot more without the power reserve indicator. Also I don't generally like Suwa styling as much as Daini's more austere take on the grammar of design.

very cool 9/10 would wear

You copied the URLs wrong, and you linked the archived thread rather than the autosaging one. Of course you didn't clean up the embed tags either. No effort. Well I typed this out already so here it is.
I was thinking about getting that for a beater, how do you like it so far?
Mason Lewis
I'm really surprised at the quality in several respects:
- the second hand hits all the indices - the second hand shows negligible backlash - the 60 click bezel has an excellent action and minimal play - the bezel has a lume pip - the mineral crystal has very a very good AR coating - cosmetic QC seems good - strap is much more comfortable than the one Seiko supplies with the SKX, and also takes a boil curve - lume is very good, if not quite Seiko bright.
Downsides: - slightly bigger than the SKX - 20mm lug width might be considered a bit narrow for the case size - polished chrome surrounds on the indices are more reflective than ideal - not easy to mod
All in all, I'd say if you don't mind quartz and the slightly bigger size these are a better value than the SKX.
I'm actually really surprised Citizen started making them again after the year or so where they were out of stock everywhere, I assumed they'd discontinued them because I couldn't see how they were making money on them at the prices they are selling them for. I was pleasantly surprised when they started coming back in stock a few months ago.
The newest one because Omega 9S external finishing has finally gotten acceptable in the last 5 years. 2500 movement ATs look like half-finished candies by comparison.
Josiah Turner
They have 8500, 8500, and 8800 movements. I don't know what kind of movement you're talking about desu. Also, all of them were produced less than 5 years ago.
Jaxon Lopez
Whelp, I'd been under the impression that all the 8xxx co-axials had Master Chronometer branding and it was the 2500 versions that only said 'Co axial chronometer'
It's a vastly more attractive watch in real life than in photos. Like you guys I thought it looked pretty shitty before I saw it in person, but I stumbled across it at a ridiculously good price (US dealers are asking like $2500 for it, I paid under $1200 at an AD in Tokyo) and liked it so much better that I ended up going home with it. The dial has kind of a pearlescent "glow" to it that makes the polished case seem much more reasonable and the odd date window much less noticeable.
Hudson Reed
It would be fine without the ridiculous numerals and maybe could have had a normal day/date instead of that pig disgusting one.
Yeah man if you like it fucking rock that shit. It may not be everyone's taste but if you like it enjoy the fucking shit out of it. Ball makes good watches and if you got it for a good price even better.
Carter Walker
i'd imagine the only reason the date window is in a strange place is so they could fit the tritium vials for the 3, but they could have made the middle line of the 3 shorter and probably still managed to cram the window in there without disrupting the numeral at all.
also I think it looks nice. Perhaps a little underwhelming for $1200. At that price point I would expect a more interesting dial finish, but it's really all about the lume, isn't it?
The Black Bay is fine. That's sort of the extent of it. It's well made and I even like Tudor as a brand but the Black Bay is pretty much the pinnacle of "oh yeah another one of those dive watches... cool I guess."
Yeah maybe he could have a BB instead of his shit collection but his shit collection has a mechanical beater watch, a Gshock that is way better in the woods than any mechanical, some equally generic diver and a seiko that wears fine with a suit. I'd rather have the BB with a suit but working in the shop, in the woods, on the shooting range I'd rather have his collection. And honestly even then you'd still be that dick wearing a sports watch with a suit, James Bond you are not.
Cameron Reed
>Muh Tudor If I was interested in spending a decent chunk of money on a watch I'd go grab a Breitling or something. As it stands I enjoy a wider collection of entry level and middle of the road watches. Don't you have a big folder of interracial porn to tend to?
>The Black Bay is fine. No, it's the best watch there is, if you think otherwise you obviously are a newbie when it comes to horology.
Breitling is trash, the only brands that produce good watches are Omega, Rolex and Tudor.
Brandon Sullivan
>Stop liking what I don't like Relating to user here: People who relate watches to financial well being, social status or any other such faggotry are generally disliked by those they interact with.
Want to wear a Tudor, a Rolex, a Breitling, a Daytona, an Omega, etc? Great, so long as you're wearing it for you and you alone.
Breitling makes a bunch of great looking watches and has a rich history with aviators. If you are talking about function being shit, you're beyond help. My $50 Seiko 5 keeps better time than most people will ever need and that's as basic an automatic movement as you can get.
Aiden Long
Yeah no. Omega, Rolex and Tudor only? That is demonstrably bullshit. I hate Patek but JLC, VC, Zenith, and AL&S all make fantastic watches.
Robert Smith and Philippe Dufour are not "brands" of course but to neglect to include them when considering the best work in watchmaking would be remiss.
Tell me more about how the Black Bay with a (well modified and crafted I'll grant you) ETA 2892 is some how the best watch there is.
Austin White
Stop feeding him (You)s
Liam Flores
Sorry it's a 2824, and only now is an in house like the Pelagos which is better than the BB in every way except for it's stupid helium release valve.
William Jenkins
what's a good watch under 200 dollars for fathers day?
The dial is a lot more interesting than it looks in pics, though, it's kind of a matte finish on the upper level and glossy down in the grooves and the white paint is kind of a silvery white pearl, so it's really cool looking as you move it around under good light and the shadows and highlights move around and stuff. It was actually the main thing that drew me to the watch when I first saw it.
The lume is indeed the main attraction, though. It's a pretty crazy lightshow at night. I really ought to get my tripod out and take a better pic, this one doesn't show the actual effect well at all.
Seiko SKX or an Orient Ray/Mako if you think your dad would be into that kind of watch. Orient Bambino if he's more of a suit and tie kind of guy. If you don't think he'd want to deal with a mechanical it's a harder choice, if you're in the US and have a membership I'd almost suggest going to Costco and seeing if they have any Seikos or Citizens that you think he'd like.
Josiah Morris
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll go browse costco and see what they have.
Xavier Scott
Ray Raven has PVD coating which will scratch easily, might look at other versions/watches in the same range
Hudson Jackson
Apparently the PVD is just on the band, which I would switch out with one of my NATO straps anyway.
I've got an MDV-106 in the mail with Amazon just because for $44 why the hell not. Might just skip a third diver and move on to something else entirely.
Joseph Perry
Afaik the coating is on the case too.
Hunter Richardson
Skinny Irish American watch man said something in one of his calming videos about the case being coated/colored with a different process I think. Regardless, going to see if this cheap Casio beater diver satisfies what remains of my dive jimmies before doing anything else. The SKX007 and 009 are always there as an alternative and old standby if I want to get another entry-range diver.
The one with the date at the six, with a leather strap.
Nicholas Howard
You have fine taste. How much does it weight?
Nathaniel Jones
I've always liked Tudor and I'd even consider a Black Bay Fifty-Eight, but this Tudorfag is making me hate the brand even more than #borntodare.
Christopher Hughes
Breitling & Tudor now share the same movements?
Caleb Allen
You know, shit marketing doesn't affect the quality of the watches. And nobody will point at you and laugh because you have a timepiece that Lady Gaga endorsed, damn it could be the opposite: >I saw your same watch on Instagram at Beckham's wrist yesterday, cool instead of: >Hey, cool watch. >Thanks its a tudor pelagos >A what? >"Tudor Pelagos" >Never heard of them. It looks kinda like my grandfather's Rolex... How much did you paid for them? >4400$ new >what?!!?! if you wanted to spend big bucks on a watch why didn't you save up for a Rollie?? >But they're made by Rolex and this model has a titan- >so these are literally the poor man's rolex? >uuh yes >... >...
Austin Walker
Have some resolve you bitch
Owen Taylor
Yes, the BB chrono uses the B01. I know, it's just cringeworthy. Shit off, whenever I think of Tudor all I can imagine is that cunt going around telling people about it the second he meets them. Like a vegan.
