The official LineageOS builds fail to install for 15.1 for Mido, because they require a "Treble" enabled TWRP, which hasn't been updated yet. The documentation for this isn't updated at all in the installation guide, so you have to go to XDA where they tell you to flash this zipfile consisting of custom TWRP. Furthermore, since all drivers and firmware and hardware is proprietary, nobody is developing replacements, so for pretty much all phones they just copy vendor blobs to get LineageOS to work. Not open-source, check your devices build tree. So it's irrelevant whether or not you build it yourself, because you also have to include these blobs to get it to build and flash.
