The macbooks nowadays have ONLY USB-C ports. So if you need anything like HDMI, VGA, DVI, Displayporn, regular USB, SD cards, ethernet, and so on, you need to have a dongle that has USB-C on one end, and whatever other thing you need on the other, so that you can actually connect to anything, because nothing uses USB-C yet.

My Thinkpad X220 has never seen a dongle in it's life, and my 2015 MacBook Pro only needed a dongle for ethernet because I wanted to ssh into an RPi and my uni's firewall blocked it so I couldn't use WiFi. The only dongle my early 2009 Macbook needed was a Mini-DVI to full size DVI adapter, and even that was a step backwards from the Macs that had full size DVI. Needing a dongle for literally everything is just bullshit.

Only thing there that you have a bit of a point for is the SD card. For everything else just buy a new cable that ends in USB-C. The only device that I can think of that doesn't frequently have a removable cable is a mouse which you'll need to stick a dongle to the end of it until peripheral makers get with the times.

Space and weight aren't free, disc drives actively make laptops worse for nearly everybody since it's a huge piece that few people would ever use. The same goes for ethernet being such a thick port that offers only a mild benefit over wifi.

A disc drive and 2.5" HDD would be over half the space of a modern laptop alone.

It astounds me how Jow Forums completely misses the point of a laptop. The most important aspects are easily portability, battery life, and screen, followed distantly by keyboard. Meanwhile Jow Forums will die on the hill that is superfluous shit like HDMI(or VGA but thankfully that's died off mostly even here) or ethernet. I'm beginning to think Jow Forums is filled with normies who use a laptop as their main computer and that's why they get uppity about not being able to turn modern ultrabooks into an octopus out of the box.

Yeah I'm in agreement here. I have a desktop for heavy lifting. Laptop is for when I'm traveling and thus a much different set of factors matters to me. Though I would put the keyboard + touchpad experience higher up than what you noted. That can be a hindrance. Trying to use my Surface Pro 2 on a plane was a disaster and I'm glad I've moved on to a different device

Answer: extremely. Hell, I can run 250+ ft of VGA anywhere I want without extenders. HDMI goes about 15.

If you're running 250 ft of VGA then you're not the one giving the presentation. Very unprofessional if you need to do this and not the hosts, hotel, convention center, etc. But you are correct about how prevalent it is. Regardless, easy enough to get a dongle for the hotels and businesses still living in the past.

I'm the one installing the projectors in classrooms, conference rooms, etc. HDMI will also have handshake issues if using in a video switcher for video presentations.

Some niche case of giving a presentation in a place that looks like it stepped out of 20 years ago isn't a good enough reason to have a giant port sticking out the side of your laptop in 2018. Even business laptops are done with that shit.

I've done plenty of presentations with switchers via HDMI with zero issues. Sounds like you might just be using shitty equipment though I'm sure that's not fault of your own. Now go get me some tape to cover up these cables, scrub, I have shit to sell to your people.

I'm talking last step here not how the room is setup prior. Hiding power cables, network cables, and video cables are all essential and need to be done after the presenter is setup with their equipment. Personally I do presentations about servers so that's a lot of shit that has to be hid a lot of the time.
