Programs are using the pagefile and users don’t notice because it’s still decently fast. Combine that with 2-6gb of vram and you have games using upwards of 10gb memory + overhead without the user noticing

My PC at work has 4GB and it's fucking awful. Compiling a medium-ish CMake project takes like 30 seconds minimum because it has to page everything, and forget it if Chrome is open.

I have 2 thinkpads with 8GB each and they both run pretty heavy IDEs perfectly fine. One of them is like 10 years old with the original mechanical HDD and it runs IntelliJ like a champ.

Main machine has 16GB and the difference is only noticeable if I'm doing like 20 things at once. The better GPU and CPU are much more noticeable, though.

I have 32 because I do occassional work with VMs. 90% of the time having more than 8 is just an excuse to leave a billion browser tabs open. Unless you are running recent AAA tier games, or some other intensive task, there's very little need to go past 8.

If you're building from scratch, eh, fuck it, get 16, but if you have 8, you're probably fine without upgrading.

I rarely need more than 4GB and my RAM consummation never went past 6GB since 2012, I don't even remember why it was so high... Shit, I use a computer from 2008 (Thinkpad T400) with Gentoo. It cost me 50€ (+several hours of hardwork to fix everything).

I can watch HD videos, play muh games (Dorf Fortress, TOME, Nuclear Throne, /vn/ shit...), code, run firefox with a tons of tabs and webRTC porn memes, run several virtual machines (most notably so I can run BandInABox in a Win7 machine because MMA only use midi files)...

Why do people need RAM, it's not like you're running some servers responding to bazillions of requests. Unless you're a gamer or use your computer for a very specific RAM hungry purpose, like in memory database computation, you don't need more than 6Gb RAM (8 to be neat).
The day I stopped playing AAA game is the day I realized modern computer solve the same usecases as the older one except the new one are bloated with useless shits, firmware, and emulation level. Of course Jow Forums knew that from day one.

8GB is still enough as long as it's DUAL CAHNNEL (don't make the ame mistake I did) and as long as it's paired with a GPU with 6GB or more of Vram (eg R9 390 or GTX 1060 6GB). Jaystwodicks made a video about how GPu vram affects normal RAM usage

12 is almost there
16 feels like enough but some cases where you might be hitting limit.
24 is enough for everything except specialized tasks.
