Is using a source based distribution a pain in the ass? Unironically considering Gentoo

It's not harder to use than Arch.

What exactly makes you assume that?

Assume what? Did I make assumptions?

It was for me. I used Gentoo for 2 days and switched back to Arch. It's just too slow for me.

Used it for a few months but switched back to a binary distro with sane defaults. I can see why people like it but I personally spent way too much time on configuring and compiling shit.

Gentoo is fine if you can live with the mediocre speeds at which processes complete. I just tested it but I'm back using trusty old Arch.

I just installed gentoo on my x220 a few weeks ago. The only difference in daily use relative to other distros is that packages take a little longer to install since youre compiling them from scratch. Thats it. Instalation of the system is also a day-long project the first time you do it. As long as you have the aptitude to troubleshoot stuff yourself, its not all too hard. Just takes a while.

Took me 6 or so hours to build and install 113 packages.
Good thing I don't really do this that much, and leaving my computer in a stale state is alright most of the time.

install crux instead

But OP, aren't all distros source based?

thank you for this post.

Unless you like bitching about everything, no, it's actually quite good.
Compilation times are an investment: you spend some time to compile a binary which will end up optimized for your machine, actually saving you time in the long run.
Gentoo may be a meme, but it's a good meme. I say go for it and fall back to a binary distro if you conclude it's not worth it.

It's not so bad if you're a NEET, but if you're not I'd imagine it wouldn't be worthwhile.

I use it, I think it's pretty comfy

>optimized
nice meme

I like it, I just don't have the time for it anymore now that I don't live with my parents and everything

Any performance increase is extremely nominal.

what is your binary distro?

It's a waste of electricity. Imagine using it on your thinkpad, a month's worth of package updates would take days to compile.

0 problem on modern hardware. If you install it from another distro with chroot it is fast and painless to install. You can adjust speed and cpu usage accordingly to your use case for updates and that's it. Of course you should be experienced and know what you want and how you achieve things with configs etc. Otherwise it'd take forever to get a running enjoyable system.
Installing and setting up takes a weekend probably, maintenance is minimal.
