Now the real question is: will we be able to get desktop linux to run on the future ARM macbooks?

Mfw Apple will buy Intel

>caring about hoursefire macshit fagbooks
The real question is: will we be able to get desktop linux to run on the future ARM windows laptops?

ARM fucking sucks too. Enjoy your proprietary bootloader blobs.

ARMlets are the dumbest motherfuckers on the planet. It was fate that Apple killed OSX and decided to push cellphones as a desktop equivalent.

Both of these are need-to-knows. up till now, ARM has either been weak Pi-clone and smartphone-tier stuff, or big rackmount server offerings with processors from companies like Cavium. We've never really had that nice middle-ground of laptop and desktop workstation-tier devices. If Linux can indeed be booted on these new ARM computers, and the hardware support is solid, then we may have a great route to escape x86.

>buy standard x86 device
>make USB installer
>install anything you want

>buy applel x86 device
>locked out of your own bios
>you are only allowed to install what applel will allow you to install if they're feeling generous

>buy standard ARM device
>locked bootloader
>huge hassle to unlock device
>eventually able to install what you want with a huge amount of bullshit

>buy applel ARM device
>locked bootloader
>locked everything
>can't install anything der furher doesn't approve of

>appletoddlers get down on all fours and beg for more

Attached: 1502897808899.jpg (1508x1920, 1.94M)

yeah but those are also just high core count cpus
Arm does not quite have a powerful cpu with fewer cores

>or big rackmount server offerings with processors from companies like Cavium
That were still weak as fuck.

Why wouldn't I use OSX? Linux is for servers when the admin is too dumb for FreeBSD.

>buy applel x86 device
>locked out of your own bios
No Mac has ever had a BIOS.
>you are only allowed to install what applel will allow you to install if they're feeling generous
Blatantly false.

>OpenBSD or NetBSD
ftfy

>No Mac has ever had a BIOS.
The ones that ran MacOS 9 used a boot ROM with custom made firmware. The later PowerPC Macs use OpenFirmware, which is a BIOS. The Intel Macs use a custom EFI, which is also a BIOS. So yes, nigger, they use a BIOS.

>>incel is kill
Fixed.

If all those different things were BIOSs then Apple did allow you to monkey with/replace them.
You can't have it both ways.

>buy macbook for 400% markup
>install shitnux on it
Why even bother?

see: It's about getting off of the x86 botnet

Processors are so complex and complicated that no matter which one you use there will always be bugs or backdoors. It's like software, these days any operating system will have hundreds of bugs that are waiting for someone to find.

You could flash the ROM on all pre-G3 Macs, as well as a select few G3 models (the beige ones and the first-gen G3 Powerbook). These were called "old world ROMs" or "Macintosh Toolkit" ROMs. You could even get into the firmware by hitting Cmd+opt+O+F on boot. You could fuck around with it to some degree.

Legacy closed source sw will keep x86 alive

Do you know what a BIOS is? It's boot firmware that searches for a hard disk or kernel and boots an OS from it. That's what a BIOS is. It differs from a boot ROM in that it's writable to store user settings or to be updated. Apple's version is locked down trash.

No they won't, Apple doesn't need them or their cruft.
Apple already has all of Intel's best engineers from Hillsboro.
They've been poaching them for >5 years now.
AMD got a few too as most of the rest saw the writing on the wall.

Cavium is almost entirely ex-Intel combined with fresh college grads.

Intel is finally getting a taste of what they did to both Shockley and Fairchild.

>We've never really had that nice middle-ground of desktop workstation-tier devices
What do you think ARM is?

Blatantly false.

That's what BIOS does, but BIOS is a specific standardization to do that.
EFI is not BIOS.

BIOSes are firmware, not all firmware are BIOSes. All Macs have had firmware, none have had a BIOS.

ARM'S BACK, BABY!

>paying for a license from ARM to fab aarch64
>able to buy intel which can't even afford to pay for x86_64

kek check out this dumbfuck

An architecture that is quite lacking in that product category?

t. uneducated brainlet
Arm cpus don't have bootloaders natively.
They use u-boot or tinykernel as a bootloader which are both foss.
The issue is their GPU/ initialization can contain a proprietary blob which is not a bootloader but is called upon by the bootloader.
The pi for instance has a foss bootloader and foss reverse engineered GPU stack but the VPU required binary blobs to initiate the GPU.
Some boards have a proprietary GPU also like the notorious Mali.

>It was said that everybody within ARM is in favor of solving the problem by open-sourcing ARM's driver — except for one recalcitrant high-level manager.

A BIOS is a basic input/output system. Coreboot is a BIOS, and having an extensible interface on top in the form of Tiano Core wouldn't change this. Every EFI is just a BIOS with fancy bells and whistles.

Fuck off, mental midgets.

If ARM takes over we might actually see some chink CPUs

Allwinner, Rockchip, and Mediatek aren't chink?

Congrats, you know what the acronym stands for. It doesn't change the fact that Open Firmware and EFI aren't BIOSes.

Mediatek is not mainland Chinese and the other two are rather small

.03 cents have been deposited into your account

Same thing with unlocking your phone with your face. Can't not cringe watching the apple ad for it.

Dumbass.

What? I never said BIOS didn't stand for "Basic Input/Output System." In fact, I agreed with it.

My mistake. But back to the shit flinging, an EFI is still a BIOS. OpenFirmware is still a BIOS.

No, a BIOS is a firmware. So is Open Firmware, and so is EFI. Just because they're all firmwares doesn't mean they're all BIOSes.

>Windows is a system for managing files, launching programs, and providing utilities for other programs that run under it.
>Ergo, Linux and Mac OSX are a Windows

This is you.

Keep reading. BIOS generally refers to the PC compatible firmware, or if you're really old, possibly the CP/M BIOS which the PC BIOS was kind of a clone of.

Jesus the autism with this nigger...

Apple is with AMD now.

he's not saying everything is an "award bios" or "amibios" you shitfucker. here, i'll fix your example:

>The Windows operating system is a system for managing files, launching programs, and providing utilities for other programs that run under it.
>Ergo, Linux and Mac OSX are operating systems

Unless this somehow make the prices come down on their products, which I don't see happening it would be just using slower hardware at the same prices resulting in more profit margins.

MS influence the market with sheer numbers once something has already been adopted by others.
>some no source rumor states apple will copy linux/ms and also make their desktop os for ARM some several years in the future
Apple, for better or worse, absolutely influence the market--see notch, headphone jacks, lack of SD card and so on. Apple doing it is news because it hints at the direction the market will take in the coming years.

Well of course nobody cares, it's Linux.

Most Windows users are /v/ermin, the other ones are using it for work so they is usualy don't care is they still run a Pentium 4 when it still works. Also they're not using their own architecture but instead just want to continue the x86 clusterfuck that is Windows on ARM. Also that shit is buggy as hell like everything made by Microsoft.

>>some no source rumor states apple will copy linux/ms and also make their desktop os for ARM some several years in the future

Copy Linux/MS? Nigger, Apple started all this with the fucking iPhone in 2007, iOS is just a modified stripped down version of OSX. Don't fucking tell me a ARM Windows or Linux would even exist if Apple wouldn't have kickstarted ARM into relevance.

But doesn't Apple need Intel for the x86 license?

Only if they want to make x86... Which they clearly don't.
Or are you implying that Intel engineers are somehow tied to x86?

You should probably reconsider that implication as it would make you look really dumb.
