If Linus did die, would Linux pretty much be dead? I could see Red Hat trying to make a power grab, but I would hate that. I'm glad systemd hasn't been made a part of the kernel yet, or the fact that the kernel still uses GPL2.

The Linux foundation would have to pick someone new to oversee basically everything the way Linus did. He might have already picked out a successor though. Systemd will not be added to the kernel because it has nothing to do with the kernel. It's an init program, plus a bunch of other utilities, but it's still user code. The kernel has to launch init, but init is not part of the kernel itself. Also, the kernel won't switch away from gpl2 because that would require that everybody who contributed to it switch away.

He might be cool and all but he ain't a god of thunder.

>would Linux pretty much be dead?
Not really?

I mean, you still have the handful to dozen of people who Linus directly pulls commits from. It wouldn't be too difficult for someone to step up and/or be nominated to step up as the maintainer, if they were to keep Linux a dictatorship.

It would only be "dead" in the sense of Torvalds' quirks and opinions; kernel development mostly happens outside of Torvalds' strict purview, anyway.

my heart unironically skipped a beat

fake and gay. not even a real article.

Even if was true, who cares, Linus already did his magnus opus, not like hes doing anything right now

> he's never programmed a GUI
> he's never programmed a mobile app
> he's never programmed a physics engine
> he's never programmed a game
> all he has programmed is fizz buzz

damn..........................................R.U.P.

He reviews code and manages the devs. He prevents Intel and other companies from running the kernel into the ground (see his rants against various corporate shit).

rip torovoltos
gonna telnet some mp3s from car radios in his honor today

POO

I'm not glad he is dead, but I'm glad that he is gone.

holy shit you're retarded lel

so since I contributed a bug fix like 7 years ago, I would have to sign yes if they tried to switch to some nazi license?

they could also replace your code

but there are far too many big and small contributors, it's not feasible to replace all the code of those that are not willing to agree or are not reachable anymore.

Stop promoting your bullshit website.
