This thread is about the appreciation of watches, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine timepiece.
Some watch photographers pull the crown to hack the second hand, so they can take pictures with the hands in the position they want.

>prez I will always be upset that Rolex refuses to put day/date in a steel case. it's an everyday complication, give it to us in an everyday case. fuck.
I partly agree but recently Rolex always put their best / newest calibres in the DD's and reserve certain dial colors just for them (such as the ice blue platinum models). All in the cause of maintaining their price ofc.
The rainbow disk you can buy anywhere (I got my at long island watch).
The pulsometer - good luck. I've never seen another one since I got it three years ago after Nineball (RIP) mentioned the 5S21 movement. There's a different pulsometer dial on ebay right now, though the price is truly ridiculous. ebay.com/itm/323310165667
I can't help but think this collection is just a bunch of fakes in a dressed up box, prove me wrong though

Very nice user! You're the guy I talked to about the jlc master calendar. Why didn't you buy the master chrono sector dial? I've been considering one of the sector dials alternatively, but I the chrono doesn't have the movement on display and the master geo is kinda expensive, like the master calendar.

its the same company bud
Aiden Richardson
awesome collection, post some caseback shots
Jaxon Scott
That user has posted enough to know they aren't fakes.
It's not his collection, he's just reposting the pic.
Wyatt Sullivan
I'm just posting that user's collection, I'm not them. But we've seen a few shots of some of those watches; I have no reason to think they're fake.
casio f-105 it's not that I hate it, but it was a stupid impluse buy and now I never wear it since I have a gw-m5610 I wanted to hydro mod it with silicone oil, but it turned out the oil I purchased wasn't the right one. And I learnt it by the hard way, breaking a perfectly fine AE1200 So I filled it with EVO oil like I did with my f-91w. No, it doesn't smell bad and it still works.
>orient star classic seems to me that it's a superior Bambino design, with a better movement, nicer glass dome, no shitty ORIENT crown logo and a power reserve
Is there any reason why I shouldn't pick this up for $250? Nobody seems to pay it any attention and I can't figure out why

What do you think about owning watches that are disproportionate with one's net worth/salary/economical class in the society? For example, when seeing someone in the working class that isn't worth much more than his car and the furniture inside his rental apartment wearing a 40k patek watch, do you find that weird?
Building on my question: how would you (roughly) classify what kind of price range on watches is fitting to each of these following social classes?
>Higher managerial, administrative >Intermediate managerial, administrative or professional >Supervisory or clerical and junior managerial, administrative or professional >Skilled manual workers >Semi and unskilled manual workers >Casual or lowest grade workers, pensioners and others who depend on the state for their income
The SARBs were better. Maybe they'll get their 15 minutes now

Thank you. That style of bracelet has started to make my penis do the big penis so I head inexorably toward another purchase
Christian Reyes
Imagine being this status-obsessed.
Lucas Robinson
It's just for my curiousity desu. But don't you think it would look weird that a blue collar would wear a patek?
Jack Anderson
I regret a lot of my vintage watches. They are just too small.
Cooper Powell
I guess.
There's two gold-plated ones on yahoo JP right now and one gold-plated one on ebay right now. The steel ones are slightly rarer to come by. ebay.com/itm/323310165769?
There is a difference between being obsessed about something and to entertain a thought.
Yes I would, but imagine that you got to know a person and that you had confirmaton that he wore a real piece.
I'm thinking that a middle class person with normal jobs, either skilled workers with decent salaries, or lower office management and similar would pull off anything up to entry level of luxury watches, like omega seamaster and others in that price range, without giving off some weird impression that it's very unproportionate. However I think that a skilled worker would have to explain it by having a particularly keen interests in watches, because he is definitely at the very limit of what he can pull off without looking silly. I mean, people will definitely think that he should've spent the money on something wiser.
I’m obsessed with watches but I’m not rich by any means. I totally understand guys like Archie who are swinging way above their weight class when it comes to expensive watches at the cost of other things. It doesn’t really make me think of anything other than that they share my love for watches. If someone would rather own a Patek than a car, good for them. I’d bet the Patek is much more satisfying than some econobox anyway. I’d never do that of course because I have a decent grasp on my watch addiction and only purchase things with money I have to spare.
Asher Taylor
skill play of executing the fashion and function side of sub 500 watches is far more exciting than literally slicing parts of your soul out of your heart in exchange for a 30k watch.
Your money IS your soul. Don't spend it on fucking watches. Nobody else does and nobody else notices that you do.
Caleb Rodriguez
I can understand them too, I would love to own a Patek, Lange, or VC, but like you I would not do it. However, while I understand their desire for purchasing something that is way above their class I think it does look very out of place, or even silly. It's like when you see someone buying a way too expensive car for themselves instead of taking care of things that matters in their life. It just doesn't look right.
Thomas Ward
user can I run my future watch purchases by you for approval? I want to make sure I'm not trying to rise above my rightful station.
Jayden Phillips
Yes you can, and I am happy to opine on it. But don't get me wrong, I'm perfectly fine with people spending their money on what they want, even tho I think what I think about it.
Lucas Anderson
So I don't normally browse on Jow Forums, but I couldn't help but notice this thread and I had to ask. Why would you wear a watch in 2018? Everyone and their mother has a smartphone nowadays, what need have you for a separate device for telling time? Wearing watches looks so outdated, and unfashionable, almost like wearing a powdered wig, a monocle or something. It's a sign that you're clearly not of this age.
> why would you want to know the time without digging something out of your pocket?
Lincoln Nguyen
It's jewellery for men.
Julian Cook
>Wearing watches looks so outdated, and unfashionable What country are you from, I wonder? Here in Scandinavia the vast majority wear wristwatches precisely because it *is* fashionable.
Come on, it seems like a waste of space. Smartphones are compact and have almost everything you could ever need.
Maybe if they were made of gold, silver, titanium and gems, with lots of design varieties, you could argue that it's jewelry, but the watches the average person wears are extremely bland and all look the same. There are some exceptions of course, I can appreciate a golden, intricate watch with lots of mechanical parts, but for example these just look awful.
