I had a theory for a long time that companies like Microsoft are slowly infesting and taking over open source projects through three main vectors:
- Large donations, inserting their people into the leadership of significant projects. When this isn't possible, at least influencing the project's direction, asking volunteers to do things they may no necessary have done on their own. This is slow but dangerous because it leads on to: - Moving the project's main aim from doing something fun, developing and sharing software, to some kind of "public good for all". This is their foot in the door, once it stops being about fun, it starts being ideological. - Bait and switching, now that they have you on the "public good" for the "community", they inject their social justice warriors. These people poison everything and will eviscerate the main group of independent programmers who are working on the project, leaving it a shell of its former self. This will also force the founders to join the borg collective of closed source software, since they will not be able to continue getting the large donations they probably already rely on.
What alarmed me was when Microsoft bought GitHub out-right. I'm seeing the same pattern everywhere, there are even purely SJW projects like Rust which aims to displace and destroy their "former order" of C and C++. Stackoverflow has long been a point of heavy infestation. They haven't managed to penetrate our shitposting on Jow Forums but I see them trying, with daily systemd[ick] copy pastas and Rust propaganda.
Each day I think that I can say less and less online due to these incidents. I couldn't even say "The X community seems to have ADHD" (in response to some policies changing very quickly) a while ago without some SJW white knighting in that I shouldn't use "offensive language" because that could be hurtful for people who have ADHD. Like fuck you, what do you even know. I know people who have ADHD, they wouldn't give a single shit, especially if it isn't even targeted at one person and it isn't even meant as an insult.
I like some projects for their technical merits. I like Rust because it has some things that I really want, like having discriminated unions, a module system and a proper package manger while being a low-level language and having explicit control over memory. But I absolutely hate the mods. They've succeeded in creating a false narrative that every community except theirs is somehow "bad" and "racist" - which is absolutely not the case. Then they censor every criticism on ShitHub, which leads to language design misfeatures and at some point the boat tips over and you have yet another C++ because some snowflake couldn't accept that his proposal wasn't the brightest idea and he got his feelings hurt.
I mean just look at this travesty: github.com/anp/rfcbot-rs/pull/210 (all comments telling him to quit his bullshit were censored of course by the very "tolerant" mr aturon himself).
I just want to go back to 2010, really. When we didn't have all this SJW bullshit. I absolutely don't care who or what you fuck, but don't tell me what to think about people. I do not support LGBTQASDF, but I don't hate them either. Their choice. But I don't spend extra funding for "women in code" - what, do they need money for opening a new tab and searching something on google? I don't like people who can't laugh about themselves. I don't want to constantly think about "could my words potentially harm someone" in order to not get censored immediately.

Those are the exact reasons I stopped using Rust. It was about the time the Trump travel ban hit and there was a big post about how they were "moving the conference." They then tried to say it wasn't political, and was purely pragmatic (because even though MOST of the community is in the US, it had to move cause muzzies). Yes, OP is being paranoid. What's painted as "SJWs infesting open source" is just projects instituting standards that encourage basic human decency. Open source has a reputation for being unprofessional and toxic, one that is rightfully earned when you look at the behavior on the Linux Kernel Mailing List, for example. There's absolutely nothing wrong with telling toxic personalities and hostile community members who are standing in the way of progress to get lost.
Also, you can't deny that groups like the Free Software Foundation are overwhelmingly white and male. This is a natural extension of the reputation for being vile that has been cultivated. We're going to have to do some housekeeping if we want to solve this serious representation problem.
