if you ever played video games, you would know this already

Main thing is you ensure there are numbers which increase.

Look at Battlefield series
Create a system of unlocks for people who are shit at games to get addicted to

Search gamification

There was a presentation by video game developers on this subject but I wouldn't know where to start looking for it.

Yes, read about the Skinner Box.

do the hard work yourself and study neuroscience, motivation, affect, how we process novelty. in the end you'll do better than relying on someone else's analysis, especially if you can then contrast your understanding with theirs.

I've been gaming since first gen. And this is what I would do:
>easy controls, plug and play
This way nobody has an excuse to drop out early.
And people who have been out of the game have no excuse not to pick it up again.
>combine easy and hard gameplay
Beginners can go through most of the game. But special things take extra work that only gamers can get with practice.
>constantly give little rewards, occasionally give big rewards
Celebrate every victory.
>make everything over the top, for maximum dopamine

I have unironically played this game every single day since it launched. I stink, but I don't care.

add a time delayed reward and include microtransactions

>add shitty shit to unlock over time
>add dailies
>add things that change every week even if it's a really pointless change
>add limited time events and exclusives even though what you're getting isn't really that cool, if you make it tradeable people will do it just for that (see: warframe)
>add cosmetics as shitty as they are (sc2)

this is an excellent book on the subject

Sprinkle cocaine on your keyboard

Skinner box 101:

>determine enticing reward
>present reward to player on a somewhat consistent interval but not 100% of the time when tasks are completed (semi-randomly)
>enjoy the rats pressing the button over and over again

Give frequent meaningless rewards like achievments/trophis and cosmetics
vidya is 99% art

Gotta agree with Hooked, it's some of the most solid, well-researched stuff out there
