>Which one would you choose? I was in the exact same position as you for many months. I narrowed down my quest for my ultimate daily sporty watch to these same two, and went back and forth a million times.
-The Pelagos spoke to me with its overall rugged look, those square indices and straight hands, that rehaut with the cutouts, its unblemished brand history (compared to Omega), etc.
-The SM300 spoke to me with its greater versatility (more refined than the Pelagos), the display caseback, the slightly superior movement compared to the Pelagos (twin barrels for more consistent torque release, greater anti-magnetic properties, tri-level co-axial movement, ...), the amazing-looking side profile, etc.
Both were "tool watches" at the top of their game; the Pelagos tending more towards the rugged side, and the SM300 more towards the "nicer" and more versatile side.
But then something happened. (to be cont.)
Parker Reed
The more learned about the movement regulation side of those two watches, the less it made sense to me for a "tool watch" to drift by a few seconds every day, and to be so fragile due to the nature of mechanical movements. But I had been a mechanical movement absolutist for my entire watch enthusiast career, surely there was no fucking way I was even going to consider a quartz, right?
And then I started reading about the Seiko Tunas, specifically the 300m ones. >all-metal high-torque movement with 7 jewels that is exclusive to the Seiko tunas and fills the entire case >unique case design that no-one on earth will mistake for a Submariner homage >unique history going back to the early 70s >100% utilitarian design shaped by input from professional saturation divers >highly domed crystal >absolutely nuclear lume
Externally, the Tuna (especially the SBBN031) sits in the middle between the Pelagos and the SM300; it has an overall rugged brushed look like the Pelagos, but some nicely polished details like the SM300 (top edges of the shroud, the grip notches on the rotating bezel, the shroud screwheads, the little lugs) making it a bit more versatile than the Pelagos.
The more I read about the Tuna, the more I finally understood why mechanical tool watches like the Pelagos and SM300 never felt quite right. The Pelagos and SM300 nailed the body of a "tool watch" (nicely finished but utilitarian metal construction and high-contrast lumed dial); but the soul of a nice and durable "tool watch" can only be a rugged, tough, durable, serviceable quartz like the Tuna's 7C46.
The Omega cal 613 is based on the 601, which is in the a slimmer, manual wind version of the 56x. The y13 incorporates an unusual date quickset; to advance the date, you pull the crown out past the time setting position, which jumps the date forward by one.
Im interested in getting a SARB 035 before they all disappear.
I recently got a Steinhart Ocean 1 and my biggest issue is that the lugs come out flat with the watch (they dont curl down with the wrist) Does the SARB have this issue? They dont sell them in my country so ive never had opportunity to try one on.
Also on a scale of 1 to 10 where 1 is a mcdonalds vanilla shake and 10 is a baileys with milk. Where does it sit on the scale?
Jeremiah Peterson
The lugs on my green alpinist SARB turn steeply down. When you place the watch with its back on a table, the lugs on both sides touch the table as well.
Blake Ramirez
Did you get a little rough while you were "winding your watch" this morning
Aiden Wood
>to advance the date, you pull the crown out past the time setting position, which jumps the date forward by one. I think I have a movement with this sort of pull-out crown date execution though I can't remember which one exactly. I think it was my Raketa Frankencalendar.
This solution is usually just a claw that pushes a tooth on the wheel, either when you push in or pull out the crown. One kinda unusual example is the Seiko 6106C, where a short press of the crown changes the date, a longer changes the day too.
>a short press of the crown changes the date, a longer changes the day too. As in, if you hold the crown in for a longer period of time, or as in Pusher the crown deeper?
Indeed. I sustained many injuries but it was worth it
Nathan Powell
Deeper. Which is a shitty solutions as you can change either the date or the day and date, but not just the day only.
As usual Daini's solutions in the 7000 series movements were better.
Sebastian Cox
Awesome thanks thats the type of shot im looking for. It looks like it will hug the wrist nicely.
How cream would you say the face is? In some pictures it looks nearly white and others it can look yellow. Its not really that vintage style cream is it?
Logan Stewart
Yeah it does look pretty creamish compared to the date window actually.
I might just order one anyway and I can return it if I dont take the plastic off it.
Xavier Collins
More like half and half than cream. The date wheel is white, so you can kind of compare. Don't worry, it's not band-aid color like the SNK803
Not vintage yellow but not pure white, more like off-white, eggshell or such. On a side note you can still find them in Japan for around $300, I just picked up a SARB033 in Tokyo last night at that price and have seen a few 035 around. Have to do a bit of digging but they are there.
The Bulova ticks sixteen times per second. The 5s21 is a true smooth motion, as it uses a vial of viscuous liquid and a spring to damp the stepper motor.
I'm not sure why they only made it for three years.
I wish there was a 18mm version of that strap, I want to try it out but I have a 20mm Erika's MN and want either 18 or 22 to try out ndc. The Soviet Amphibia I have coming in mail is 18mm, sadly.
The color of the dial really depends on the lighting. It won't really look cream unless it's in direct sunlight. Most of the time indoors it looks white and the difference between the date window and the dial isn't noticeable unless you're examining it up close. The dial is also technically perlescent, but you will almost never see that unless you are trying to get the light to reflect off it just right.
You already know wich watch you get next? I own a few vintage watches I got from ebay.
Nice one, I realy like this watch!
Austin Stewart
Yeah but why 30 minutes and not 60? The purpose of any dial on a watch that maxes out at 30 is not readily apparent
Andrew Russell
Because they use original MN parachute webbing there is only variations between 20mm and 22mm available, sadly. On the plus side, the NDC stuff is much stretchier than the EO parachute webbing.
Joseph Barnes
the idea is that it's easier to read such a small dial if it has half the increments. not exactly a fan, it's kinda wierd having to interpret the hand position
I think the bronze tudor will be my next

Luke Rogers
The 613. Aside from mean rate, runs within 0.1 of chronometer specs.
normal people don't talk like that. watchmakers don't even talk like that
t. your friendly neighborhood watchnaker
Angel Cruz
I don't get the relationship between the minutes subdial, which only has 30 minutes and the hours subdial. Does the 30 min dial go around twice per hour and you're supposed to figure it out by whichever hour marker is closest?
Justin Morales
Does the regular bulova precisionist movement count as HAQ? The basic model with the cool sewing needle seconds is only $100 and it even has a completely solid bracelet
David Morgan
>complaining that people discuss the technical and performance aspects of watches in a watch thread The watch thread is that way if you aren't interested in the technological and horological aspects of watches.
Hudson Ramirez
You can resize bracelets, y'know
Nicholas Scott
Right, and we all need to constantly wind our AUTOMATIC watches
Luke Martinez
Maybe I'll get a 22mm for Amphibia then. I was a little disappointed by the stretchiness of EO MN strap so that's good to hear. I left the perlon I usually use on this bad boy at my parent's.
Gonna get a calculator watch, going for the poor slav aesthetic, which should I get?
Christopher Watson
"0.1 of chronometer spec" is a funny way to talk about your watch. 0.1 spd from Chrono spec? 0.1% from Chrono spec? just tell us how your watch is running
Kayden Martinez
No. It is rated at 60spy, well above what the current haq community considers haq.
Isaac Jackson
your automatic watch is regulated to run at full wind.
Xavier Bennett
The second and probably last watch I've purchased. It's satisfying enough that I don't lust after any other watch right now. The start-stop pusher takes an alarming amount of pressure to activate and the first time I hit reset, the chrono second hand went back to about minus-three seconds. The next dozen or so resets have arrived at the expected 12 oclock position so hopefully it's not damaged.
His comment was perfectly understandable to those of us who have been here a while since a while back he tested many of his watches using COSC testing methodology and created a spreadsheet for the results he shared with /wt/.

>How old are you?

>How many watches do you have in your collection?

Modern adjusted movements should not show that much drift in rates over the first 24 hours of power reserve, honestly. Vintage movements are another matter, of course.
Daniel Perez
Why are your wrists so small?
Cooper Campbell
so your delta is 8.1, that's pretty good. but that's one part of cosc. why bring up cosc if the rate is so far off? get that bad boy regulated and no one will even care about the +0.1, that would still pass qc in our shop
Agreed, I have to get it regulated (it's a one piece case so I can't do it myself since I'm not confident in opening them), but at least to me the other parameters are more intimation of how well and precisely the movement is keeping time.

Cocktail time today. I wanted to change the factory strap originally but the more I wear it the more I feel like it's perfect for the aesthetic. Very weird that its backwards though.
