Good features, plays almost everything. But this comes at a cost in quality as its rendering is trash compared to better alternatives. Defaults are kind of dumb, colors appear washed out unless you change a gpu setting (does not have good "out of the box" settings). Struggles with larger files. Once libplacebo (mpv library) is implemented it will be better but imo still not the best. Good choice for the less tech savvy.

It's ok. Requires 3rd party programs to make it comparable to mpv in terms of rendering (madvr, assfiltermod). I dont think its supported any more and just getting codec updates so it wont be getting any better and just stagnating. Windows only is kind of a turn off. The only good thing about MPC-HC and the like is being able to use madvr. But still not as flexible as mpv.

My personal favorite on all OSs so I am biased. Great options and scripting ability. Very easy to stream. Autoprofiles is awesome. You can use it as is without doing anything to it or you can spend lots of time customizing it.

I'm an EE student that uses his computer mostly for studying and shitposting, and proteus runs extremely well on wine. windows would take about 10x longer to boot up and it crashed too much, was too cpu intensive(I have an fx-4300) and pretty much its only redeeming factor was games. so I decided to go arch with kde(it has a very similar workflow to what I was used to) and I can't ever go back.
I have barely done any "tweaking" and it just worked out of the box since I did the install guide on the arch wiki. windows 7 sucks ass and can't even be installed from an usb 3 port, other than having serious issues(for no reason) while installing on an ssd.
in fact, I found windows to be more of a hassle to install/maintain than even arch(drivers aren't pre-installed, have to find them in shady russian youtube videos, other than constant virus checking on everything I download).
but no, user, I use linux because I have no friends! my girlfriend cheats on me.

oh yes, it isn't a hassle to google so that you find the binaries for the software you want, and then have to uncheck the adware spyware in the installer.
it certainly isn't a hassle to update every single software manually because package management is non-existent(don't try to use choco for that, it sucks ass, it works more as an install script than a package manager)
oh, and not having internet or sound when you install because windows doesn't like pci cards without dedicated drivers
and (this on w7) having to download drivers FOR AN INSTALLER so that it installs from your usb 3 port
(also on w7) needs external programs (proprietary and paid) to function properly with multiple monitors
have to put up with ridiculous amounts of time where the computer is updating and is unusable bc if you turn it off windows will kill itself and you'll need to reinstall
