Serious answer: it's not. It's just neutered mkv. People commonly mistake container formats for encoding formats. What's important is the video stream inside the container, and webms on Jow Forums only support vp8, which is old and busted.

Why would Jow Forums devs care? Ffmpeg can decode vp9 since forever, which is what they probably use to get thumbnails. It's an arbitrary limitation. Youtube has been serving vp9+opus for years and nobody has trouble software decoding.

Youtube can fallback to more widely supported codecs like h264. That's a false equivalency.

Tell me why Jow Forums devs would care that some people can't playback vp9 webms? Apple doesn't even support webm, so by your logic they wouldn't have allowed webm because iOS users wouldn't be able to playback them. Except that's not what happened.
