It's source-based. Though people generally use gentoo-mirror/gentoo (official Gentoo mirror with some metadata shit added for you so you don't have to generate it yourself), which wasn't compromised, plus signature checking for both repos.
Plus, the rm -rf /* shit wouldn't get anywhere past the Portage sandbox. It'd just end up deleting the source code in /usr/tmp/portage or whereever.

I was using gentoo-mirror/gentoo. But because of this as a precaution going forward in the future to be able to use sync-rsync-verify-metamanifest, I decided to switch back to rsync. git was faster over the network than rsync, but I feel safer with the PGP verification.

yeah it looks like their official git repos are push over ssh only. sadly github doesnt have this capability and its just one more reason not to use it
