Why the hell did I learn computers for?

what do you do when you realise every single job in your 'career' has been pure shit
where are the good fulfilling jobs?

also it's no surprise nothing fucking works anymore, there's too many soibois and retards fucking up every single tech company

technology is the future, we all become AIs in the future, Finally human race will come to an end.

im skeptical, I forsee lots of stuff breaking and getting worse
there's so much poorly designed tech around today
windows and mac are total shitshows now
even linux was more reliable 5 years ago than today
and everyone is obsessed with crappy services

the only thing that really seems to be improving in tech is dolphin, blender and krita
how do I pay bills by writing open source code?

the web was so much better in the late 90s/early 2000s

icq, irc, chat rooms, forums were so much better than reddit, facebook and twitter
games were better as well, movies too

why does everything suck so much now?

>games were better as well
Debateable.
Nowadays a lot of shit is created, but the general understanding of gameplay has increased the overall quality of games.
Older games were usually very experimental, full of pointless features that are only cool in theory and generally very unbalanced.
Nowadays games often even get development to the fucking ending, instead of the past status quo where the end portions were almost always rushed.

However, normies destroyed many important genres. I miss arena FPS and RTS.

>where are the good fulfilling jobs?
If it wasn't shit they wouldn't pay you to do it.

>how do I pay bills by writing open source code?
Either hope some Jow Forumsentooman becomes stupid rich and starts his own X-Men or get a real fucking job.

you are just scratching the top

computers are fun fuck you

>I miss arena FPS
let us hope that the new unreal tournament will take off

normies invaded and ruined our fun little online communities and made them all even

Why
are
you
typing
like
this?
Yeah, I do agree with you, but we will lose a lot of jobs. Especially blue collar jobs where the task can be automated. Academics will continue to be the best path, unless it's math. Computers will do take over

>have a shitty programming job I hate
>look around for job openings
>not qualified for anything
>been tired of learning ever since I started working full time
>would have to bust my ass teaching myself more relevant technologies while working full time because my current skillset is completely irrelevant to the rest of the world
>even if I succeded, I would probably be equally or even more miserable because I give zero shits about web/apps/data science/meme learning
>realize the only thing left to look forward to in life is raises, whether I stay or switch jobs

Because you grew up with your computer and the early web. You didn't have many friends to go outside with, did you? Maybe you lived too far away, maybe they just didn't like you....But the computer was a safe haven, you could log on and everybody was equal, judged only by the content they produced. It was a true meritocracy.

Then the normies came, they have platforms catereing to their need for over-simplified UI and UX. They have to have a "share" feature where they can add their ego to whatever it is they want you to see so they can seem so much holier-than-thou. There's advertisers who want to spy on the normies and thought, and by proxy, yours as well.

The people who made going outside lame and not fun have invaded your space, both from a user-end perspective (normie-fication of the online experience) and an R&D perspective (SJWs, HR, H1-B immigration abuse).

What is the deep problem?

Kinda true. grew up with computers, had a "knack" for fixing them and building them. Decided to make a career as a pc tech/network tech. Took computer classes in school. (2002). After graduation took/passed A+/Network+ exams. Life happened. Needed job, didn't really matter what in or what it was. long as it was stable income it was good with me. 13 years later still want to be in IT but job I'm at is decent gig. got 15 more years till I can retire w/pension + 401k + medical coverage. Plan to put in my time, retire then land a low end IT job. Hell I'll be only 50 and I'll have my pension check + other job income. Plus side is that if I don't like it I can quit with no hesitation. It ain't like the lack of extra money will hurt me any (by the time I retire I plan to have everything paid for)

I don't work in IT, not anymore at least. I didn't take out excessive student loans so I paid everything off in a couple years, quit my job as a software dev, and went to a trade school and apprenticed as an electrician. Now I make only about 15k less and have an easy job. No more weirdos with dyed hair, no more insane deadlines, no more half-assed products being shipped. All I do is install wiring in people's homes and in businesses, either in new or renovated buildings. Nice and easy, and I do the same thing every day. I work with normal guys who haven't given me a single problem.

Go learn a skilled trade. Kids on Jow Forums should also pay attention to what I'm saying here. College is a meme and every skilled trade has way more open jobs and is infinitely less stressful.

>the only thing that really seems to be improving in tech is dolphin, blender and krita

why is this sentence cracking me up so much, it's absurd

It'll be a very long time until computers take over higher level math.

because its true, these projects are the only ones constantly making leaps forward without fucking things up

photoshop was great until they fucked it all up with their subscription and bundling other adobe shit you dont need

gnome has caught the apple ui bug, now ubuntu has decided to go with gnome instead of unity, gentoo cant even prevent itself from getting hacked

I miss the 90s/2000s where you can make an email and not have to provide your bloodtype for verification

tech is much less usable, less convenient today with few exceptions
it feels like all the good devs and engineers retired or they're too busy arguing with their bank over loans or something

how do you feel about solus / budgie? i feel like they've done a good job of creating a cohesive and opinionated stack focused on the user that actually feels consistent

This is my life now
I've realized that I can also predict the future
It's easy really
Imagine the creepiest, most invasive, privacy destroying application of technology
That's the future, in about 5 years
Once that rolls around, and your expectations of the worst thing possible have adjusted, repeat

lot of truth being said in this thread.

I feel like there was way more too see on the Internet back then, like the the Internet felt "bigger" in a way. There used to be a bunch of small communities and shit to explore but nowadays it's just seems like the same shit repeated over and over. Not sure if it's just my nostalgia talking tho.

Attached: Modest_mouse_2007_album.jpg (286x286, 24K)

ill give it a try

yeah it did
just take nintendo for instance
there was ign, nintendojo, gamecubelife?, n-sider, and a bunch of other smaller sites, fansites for individual games
now there's just ign, kotaku, gonintendo, and weird sites you never heard of before with copy pasted content

and there's no girls in tech
fucking barren desert

>gentoo hacked
You dum dum, it's github that was hacked

What computer jobs are you guys talking about? Help desk? Cable monkey? Those are shit jobs.

I'm a software engineer and it's awesome. I love my job currently. Only wish I didn't have to do on-call (it's only once every few months though).

If you're a software engineer and your job sucks then leave. You're in very high demand. Stop doing work for assholes.

Probably americans

>If you're a software engineer and your job sucks then leave. You're in very high demand. Stop doing work for assholes.
I can't think of any interesting or useful software from Australia, maybe I should move, where to?

all my favorite projects are open source and dont pay
what do?

I started back at school this summer after unsuccessfully trying to drink myself to death for 3 years. I'm at community college again currently to finish up my maths.

By next summer I'll have an associates in sysadmin or database management, haven't committed to one yet, along with 2 shitty gen Ed associates. Then I'm going back to regular college to hopefully finish my cyber security degree.

This thread is bumming me the fuck out. I turn 26 in August, and all I want is a job where I can sit down, I'd rather kill myself then keep working at Costco for the rest of my life.

I try not to get think about all the time I've wasted because it's depressing, and Im willing to work hard to improve my life now because I'm already not happy, so I don't think trying to improve will make things any worse. But sometimes it seems like it will never get better.

Sorry for the blog post, any reassurance would be nice, if you want to just shit on me that's fine too.

its called openbsd, they care about code correctness

Come to America. Tons of good jobs here, and we pay well. Kinda hard to get in right now though, sorry man.

hahahahaha

I don't know any other way to make 6 figures

Sophomore year. I switched from CS to Accounting and started my own business consulting.

Do you mean "pure shit" as in boring work or low pay? Because if it's low pay you are just a shitter.

Attached: 1498672035083.jpg (724x1024, 96K)

I sympathize, user.

the work sucks
the company sucks
the people there suck
the product they make sucks

forced meme

I was in your same spot basically. The catalyst for me was joining the military for an IT related job. That kicked my life into high gear. I know it isn’t for everybody but I’d rather get yelled at at Basic Training and get paid for it instead of making some CEO a lot of money off of my back. 2 years out and I’m working as a systems admin for a 3 letter agency. Fat money rolling in and low stress, shit is cash.

Computers just can't be the "only" thing you're good at, you have to have expertise in other avenues as well. I gave up freelancing because I really only like working on MY computer and no one elses, and I would charge 100/Hr at a minimum of two hours no matter what. That would raise a lot of questions
>why charge so much this stuff is easy
>why so expensive I should have gone to best buy
>this took you 10 seconds to fix
it's disheartening to think people say this when they need help,
>oh no that's too expensive I thought you were just a neighbor's kid who thought he knew about computers.
I moved on to networking and things have changed for the better.

I joined the Marines for only five years and feel like I have better leadership training and skills than most 45 year old directors at my job and I'm barely 30. It's a great foundation for those with no idea or direction. That and getting a security clearance was easy.

I agree my dude. So many people in the corporate world lack basic soft skills, are unable to communicate with their peers or clients, show up on time, or even not look like shit. I think Burgerland not having a mandatory enlistment is a disservice to our country. That's one of the reasons why we have so many basedboy's running rampant.

For this guy though, even if you don't enlist, there is hope for you. You'll likely have to put in some work though and for me the hard work was the military.

>there's too many soibois and retards fucking up every single tech company
Indeed, there are too many like you

Because you're becoming old and bitter, user.

Im good at many things, but bloody hell I thought I'd be working on cool robots or something, nobody told me I have to build my own waifu cause all women are shit and no nice looking girls in stem

butthurt soiboy detected

oh no, have I become that 30 year old boomer?

Our lifetime you reckon?

I feel you. Have multiple IT related articles, trade school in computer science, python certification, and exploiter certification. Currently on two hall of fame for finding exploits in companies such as Sony. Hold an Associates degree.

Here I am. Asking people what they need help with. Making a shit wage.

Arena FPS and RTS were the epitome of competitive gaming. Gaming sucks cock now. CSGO is still around but CS has always been kinda meh...

accurate

I'm 24 and a few math classes from my associates in CS. I wasted so much of my life doing nothing. Drinking, drugs, porn/fapping addiction. Never had a gf. Just got a job in the shipping department of a warehouse routing trucks, scheduling pickups, filling out BOLS and shit like that. It's $18 an hour so it's some money in my pocket. Trying to get back into programming so I can get the fuck out of here but I have so much brain fog and just always fucking tired. Hang in there user. Hopefully we get through it.

>where are the good fulfilling jobs?
"working" at home is the only fulfilling job to me.

i wish i never got into computers, spent all my teens being addicted to the internet, spent 15+ years of life programming. im still broke, have no friends, no gf, pretty sure im going to end up homeless. Everything i liked about computing is now retro and obsolete.

What are you laughing at? It's the place to be for tech.

what languages do you know? and what tips do you have for an aspiring programmer?
