Why do you think the VR Hardware scene is so dead these days? Aside from the Pimax 8K I cant think of any post 2016 announcements that aren't just shitty cellphones you can strap to your face to watch your pornography in public without giving away the ghost.

gimmick

honestly cheaper, more entry consumer products, along with extreme high end developments, should come first, before we have ubiquitous mid range devices. Also, developers dont give a shit because not enough sales -> less sales -> less development. Its the vicious circle.

too fucking expensive, and the lower cost alternative give up something important or are all around shit

Too expensive to get into if you don't already have the equipment. Current gen stuff's video quality makes you feel like you got eyesight problems. So if you go in expending to be able to enjoy a movie or something in HD you're in for an expensive disappointment.

Too expensive and games and applications are shit.

If there was a version of these headsets out that could reasonably replace a monitor i'd be down for it but it's otherwise a novelty.

I have lazy eye so I guess it's not worth the investment.

ghost in the shell / shadowrun type HID when?

Attached: plug.jpg (720x400, 71K)

they're useless. i bought the vive, most games require me to move and i don't have room for that (i can't even rotate, i thought i'd be able to use it without needing that). what's worse, these things were designed mostly around that, so if you don't have a lot of room, it sucks.

and then you also need good hardware, and the software is still bad overall (small userbase, little incentive). even porn is hard to find, only relatively professional stuff and paid, outside of short/sample clips

tl;dr vr flopped

expense being part of it, but most of it is there aren't any fucking games that aren't gimmicks. If there was a single awesome must have game that actually can be played for more than an hour without being bored, then VR would've taken off. VR developers are trapped in gimmick mode, which has killed most interest. FFS the only actual game that's come out is that light saber guitar hero clone, it's fucking pathetic.

This

Beat Saber is pretty fun IMHO but yeah i'm not sure i'd buy a VR headset just for that. But i'm already not the type of person to buy a console for just one game.

it was and always will be a fad.

So much outdated info in the thread. The good game situation is getting much better. The tech is just early. VR will be big, it's just at the enthusiast stage right now. Oculus next product will be Santa Cruz, a 6DOF headset with a SoC. That will get the normies into VR. Apple will eventually come out with something too.

>most games require me to move and i don't have room for that
So you're judging it poorly because you can't enjoy the full benefits of VR in your cuckshed? Presence is one of the best parts of VR, and being able to freely move around the room is a big part of that.

VR sucked and no one cared about it besides nerds

Attached: 1519871305510.png (1217x676, 796K)

Beat Saber and Robo Recall are basically killer apps for me, but I don't have the money to get an appropriate headset for those games.

because retards keep paying for those 3 overpriced models
if consumers gave them the finger other companies would make better models for a cheaper price

>VR developers are trapped in gimmick mode
There's no funding available for "real" games, unless you're a AAA studio like Insomniac. If you're a VR dev, unique gimmicks are the only way to attract an audience on a shoestring budget.

Because that longnose jew (((Zuckerberg))) had to buy Oculus and make it closed source. Any interest in making VR compatible for released games, died. Instead, you have a bunch of companies that keep you locked into their system and support, cross compatability is nonexistent and the dev tools are specifically made for whoever is the highest bidder, locking the development and the hardware vendor mindset into generating money, as opposed to making it compatible. In an open source system, users could've had the tools to make the hardware compatible but interest greatly died when oculus was sold.

VR is struggling and its future in question, but not for the reasons you listed. Only Oculus is locked down and Oculus hone will die within 5 years because of it. Steam VR is wide open and supports literally any VR headset and controls. The SDK and programming tools are free and cross comatibility alive and well.

Valve is making their own gen 2 headset absent of HTC and other companies are and will continue to. The Valve headset is supposed to be hush hush but who cares.

>Pimax
tomshardware.com/news/pimax-8k-missed-q2-delivery,37388.html

Their official site is also down.
pimaxvr.com/en/8k/

Probably took the money and ran and from early hardware, it's got worse tracking than WMR headsets and a fuck ton of latency issues.

>tfw you fell for the Rift meme
I gotta say though, VR Ping Pong is fucking awesome.

The only people putting the resources into VR Games are the japanese, and they've set up the VR ZONE Shinjuku with a bunch of custom hardware to go with the vive so it's like a VR arcade center setup.

Easy way to combat piracy and get fast returns on investment.
youtube.com/watch?v=EDEaTlIEfwM

Are you retarded? That first link shows they're still active on the kickstarter community boards and their latest update was yesterday saying they're ready for mass production

They said they were ready for mass production months ago, and said they were going to ship Q2 2018, they've fucking missed it, and their site is fucking down fucking right now.

WTF, a VR Evangelion game

Evangelion is a classic in Japan, of course they will put resources into it.

They are opening VR Zone Osaka too so it's obvious that they've been successful.

vrzone-pic.com/en/

You should try SuperHot VR. Hands down the most fun VR game

WMR works pretty well. I tried my cousins' vive, I was not impressed at all, horrible screendoor effect, clunky controllers.
Then my roommate bought the HP wmr, which has higher resolution, but not oled, but that extra resolution makes a world of a difference. Very immersive, decent controls.
The downside is that controller tracking is in the headset, so if you move them behind you for too long tracking fucks up until they are 'visible' to the cameras again.
But, while a bit gimmicky, it's super impressive.

Cheezy video, while still a bit clunky, they've got the HTC vive on VR backpack PCs and 4 player team play in Dragon Quest VR and 4v4 battle in Ghost in the Shell.

Dragon Quest VR

Ghost in the Shell VR
youtube.com/watch?v=p2_io65ndyk

It's only a matter of time for some company to deem something like SAO feasible, IBM has already done preliminary testing.

Because the market slowed down for the lack of people investing in their PCs for them being able to play in VR for the current overpricing of parts.

to be fair, today's VR is actually good, the VB was just trash

Time to brag in an anonymous Assamite glass sculpture soviet. I have always said this was a marketing-built fad from the ground up, and the fact that both AAA and indieshit journo-fuckers were peddling it nonstop was clue enough. It's the same shit as older VR was, just with an accelerometer added. It's still way, way underwhelming compared the the idea of VR we have. This shit isn't starting until we have full-body haptics.

Attached: 1449414718151.jpg (500x394, 25K)

Vive pro was a disappointment and PiMax was vaporware. It will be at least a year until we see something gen 2.

Western games and the game industry are a joke aren't they.

>Vocation girl about the town
Is that a thing in japan?

Yeah, nah. Today's VR still makes me wanna vomit.

>their site is fucking down fucking right now.
That's never used... They're literally active right now on kickstarter and you're going ABLOO BLOO BLOO

When a company can't be arsed to even maintain their official site it tells you things.

Lots of kickstarter scams are still active long after the people run off with the cash.

Well it's full of those retarded fake gamer journalists hell bent on pushing their SJW and fat feminism agendas, people tend to pirate more in the west, but it's going to be hard to pirate all that custom hardware they are building the VR experience around.

Not really sure but I think it's just a round about way of saying NEET or compensated dating.

Probably because they still haven't returned their investment in development.
You spend 40million or whatever developing a headset, you're not going to release V2 when you've only sold enough headsets to make 10 million dollars.

Lack of compelling games, high hardware requirements, headsets are currently expensive, mediocre, and bulky. Phone headsets meanwhile are taking off since they're a relatively small investment(assuming you have a phone already) in order to consume VR video.

Gimmick.

I think if they worked on converting games into (at least stereoscopic) 3D and simply marketed them as Heads with at best head trackeng for a couple of games like Skyrim, they would have been more successful.

Cheaper, no need for retarded motion controller and room-size empty space.

I'd buy one myself for sure.

Attached: IMG-20180627-WA0004_1.jpg (332x471, 28K)

They learned nothing from the first wave in the 90's:
>expensive hardware
>proprietary support
Where are my opengl and directx library equivalents for OS support?
>exclusives
>uneven experiences across platforms
>lack of fluent control schemes
>lackluster developer and media support
Right now, the people who want to own VR have VR. That said, I own an Oculus Go. Low end VR gaming and 360 videos are pretty meh once the wow factor wears off. Makes for an amazing set of porngoggles though.

Attached: VFX1.jpg (1024x768, 96K)

Thank GOD my rational mind kicked in and I didn't waste money on VR. I had money at the time to throw away, decided to invest in a new wardrobe and a gym membership instead. So fucking better off.

>Where are my opengl and directx library equivalents for OS support?

OpenXR

People are waiting for next-gen.
And, there still aren't that many great games.

I like the arcade concept.
Could be a fun night out with a small group.
But I imagine it's quite expensive?

Recommend me software or porn. GearVR with s8+

As other anons have said, it's just so expensive or too technical for normalfags. I mean technical in terms of osvr that is much cheaper than the vive and co. And lack of content etc
The next step would be eeg integration but those consumer, hell open source headsets atm cost as much as a decent vr hmd's.
Full dive is much closer than we think. Or I'm obviously retarded.

Fbfp
Too expensive, phones are more readily available.

wanted to get into vr with the vive pro but found out that they dont come with controllers

I remember the VR plugin startups from the dot com days.

A lot of progress is being made to make foveated rendering possible. Once it's available it'll probably make VR mainstream.
Right now one of the most important thing and easy to implement feature to add would be something like ambilight.

>I think if they worked on converting games into (at least stereoscopic) 3D and simply marketed them as Heads with at best head trackeng for a couple of games like Skyrim, they would have been more successful.
No, people would have hated the experience. Skyrim VR is utter garbage compared to a polished games made for VR like Beat Saber or Robo Recall.

I won't get VR until it is wireless, foveated rendering on an 8K or highest screen, and 120fps or higher. The give was fun when I tried it but it isn't worth purchasing until this creteria is met.

>No, people would have hated the experience
Why?
Once again, I don't want "VR" as it marketed today. I want "3D" games with rudimentary tracking.

What I really want, though, is eye tracking for dynamic DoF control.

imagine if you had such high standards for typing

Not him, but I do.
I'm currently building a wireless split mechanical keyboard.

Isn't that exactly what VorpX does?

>Isn't that exactly what VorpX does?
It is! Needs support for more games, though.

Attached: Screenshot_20180702-092450.png (1920x1080, 479K)

Can you afford Titan Vs? Cuz even that won't drive 8K @ 120FPS

i don't think two titan v's are enough for 8k on two screens at even 60fps.

Well, what ever can will most likely cost that much or even more at launch.

current vr is too expensive as is. normies can't afford this crap.

Personally, I'd be ok with 30fps.

if its a movie maybe. im too used to using a 144hz monitor though.

Well, I have been using IPS screens exclusively, so I at best had 60 fps.

My main screen at home is PA279Q.

If they can afford their iphones they can afford this shit.

Fallout, Skyrim, Elite Dangerous, Beat Saber, etc

It will be dead until Santa Cruz comes out. That will be a game changer because it will be "best of both worlds": good quality (like Rift), but convenient (like Go).
Wait for that.
VR will go mainstream from there, guaranteed.

I almost completely agree. The color in the HP headset sucks, especially darks, so games like elite dangerous aren't as good with it. Vive screen door is fucking terrible though.

The Samsung one is nice though.

I will never understand how the America market could fuck up VR as bad as it has. I've got $800 right in front of me and I've been hard for VR since the first time I saw Johnny Mnemonic scene of him surfing the VR web (so about 23yrs). And that stack of cash will just continue to sit in front of me.

No where to try on the gear. No way to know if it will be comfortable with glasses. Not ONE fucking must play game/app. Failing on this level is almost impressive.

I'm not even looking for a racing game where I try and beat King Kong to the finish line. How about a relaxing game where I tour the far ends of the earth. Like take a virtual walk through some ancient temple in Asia or attend a concert in Japan. Maybe a realistic rollercoaster experience.

Instead we get, teleport around a room and shoot stuff. How the fuck is that much better than just playing a normal FPS.

Vive pro is nice but WAY overpriced imo

If you get sick from today's VR is either because the PC running out was too slow, the IPD was wrong for you, or the game/app is doing something hacky with motion.

They have a kit that comes with everything but it's way too fucking expensive

So, you want seated VR?

30 fps in VR is terrible

What does Jow Forums think of webvr and things around it like Mozilla's aframe ?

I want HMD with 2 screens and regular control scheme, such as steam controller or even keyboard+mouse.
Maybe some head tracking for head control (not actual body turning) in games like Skyrim
Sometime in the future eye tracking for dynamic DoF.

Why so?

I've seen multiple stores you can try it on at. You can get inserts for your glasses. There are tons of seated gamed, tours, and exploration stuff as well as passive content (i.e. you just sit and watch)

The problem is all the headsets are too expensive and low resolution. Give it 5 years.

>Valve
Die shill
This.
Not even a good gimmick. I wouldn't mind having one to use as a monitor, but that isn't what they are advertised as.
I find it funny how the faggots pushing VR are a bunch of subhumans that look like they do no physical activity such as Gabe Newell and Palmer Luckey, but they are more than happy to do physical activity if it involves video games!
I'll get one when I can play using my brain waves as a controller.

Attached: 1527844593489.jpg (1109x739, 177K)

>I want HMD with 2 screens and regular control scheme, such as steam controller or even keyboard+mouse.
I play Elite Dangerous with a $280 HP headset. I'm seated and use an Xbox one controller. Same way I play Skyrim. You don't have to use motion controls OR room scale with either.

How is it? How is 3D?

>Why so?
I'm no scientist but it feels fucking terrible. I've found less than 90 fps in VR is unusable. Basically VR is neat but it's too expensive and the hardware isn't good enough yet. Maybe in another 8 years.

Also, how is it as a placement for a monitor?
How does it work with tiling WMs?

How is ED? It's basically euro truck simulator in space. Most people hate it, but space nerds like me love it. I played it before I got VR, I actually got my headset specifically for this game. Dogfighting in a fighter is a perfect use case for VR, it really helps to have the head tracking.

But basically if you don't have a specific game or use case don't get a HMD.

Current VR headsets are too low resolution to replace screens for productivity. Maybe eventually, like others have said 8k with foviated rendering should do it.

>Maybe eventually
Well, shit.
I guess I'll have to stick with the regular monitor for the next 10 years. Maybe the technology will finally be there by the time Wayland is actually useful.

Skip to half way youtube.com/watch?v=UeJu-zgPcWE

>teleports behind u
>fries ur brain
fuck that

The only WMR headset available in my country is the Acer one.

Importing the Samsung Odyssey means getting buttfucked by taxes and making it cost more than the HTC Vive. We don't even get botnet Rift here.

>giving away the ghost.
Giving up the ghost means seperating the body and soul; dying.
I think you mean giving away the show.

what do you nerds think about WMR?

Theyre all waiting on Samsung to make a better display, which they havent.

Only 1 of those isnt shit

No they didn't

VRCades were in America first

By the time we have 8K screens the cards that can drive it will be $300.

We have affordable 4K screens now and the cards that can drive it cost like 3 times that.
