What is Tor useful for?

I was wondering what are some reasons to use Tor other than privacy. Ive heard of people using it on the pirate bay which is why im interested in it.

Hiding stuff from your ISP. Like proxy but layered and obfuscated and therefore more reliable.

Is it useful for torrenting without a vpn? Or adds a layer of protection?

It is a nice example of security software that outlived its usefulness. It's a historical piece of software but, unfortunately, law enforcement finally found a smart answer to it. RIP TOR You were a beauty but now you are old
