I never heard of that program until now and I guessed it was closed-source and Windows-only based on the name actually being simple and easily pronounceable and not a hamburger acronym and the benchmarks proving all the alternatives are dog shit in comparison.

PNG is a lossless format. Each row is zlib compressed. Before compressing a row, it can run a reversible transformation in the data, then the transform and the compressed data is written out. The best compressor just runs each transformation and sees which compresses best.
