There have been some attempts, doing things like releasing samples of scents from little nozzles, which mix to make something believably close to the smell being reproduced. The biggest problem is demand. Advertisers love the idea of filling your living room with an aroma that might make you crave their product more. Apart from that, not many people want to smell lockerroom smells when they watch football or smell trash as they walk past a dumpster in a game.

But on the flip side,

Smell and taste come from the chemical structure. Nothing stops you from strapping a canister with gas to your VR headset and program the game to release it at certain points. The biggest problem is probably that no one wants to refill their smell cartridge once a week.

In Japan back in like the 00s they made a phone that had 3 scents in it and it would mix them up in various quantities in attempt to make different smells n shit.
I don't remember how accurate it was. Clearly it failed
