Is 128GB of RAM enough for a laptop in 2018?

At current insane memory prices that is that, like $400k in RAM?
>intel gfx
I guess the 1st questions you need to ask is what stuff(s) you're doing which need 128GB of RAM to make your job more easier and you're willing to spend the money for it.
Running 40GB two hour long 8K VR 60FPS porn vids from a RAMdisk.
>six-core Xeon
what's the point, isn't it just going to throttle under an actual workload?
Then won't it be more useful to do this stuff on a desktop than the laptop if you're doing VR stuff?
and I thought the acer predator 21x was overkill
All that ram and fast storage wasted on a 6 core processor? Should of went with AMD.
I'm a statistician and routinely deal with data that has billions of rows. 128GB only gets me started.
Remember to allocate 1.5*128GB swap space!
Not if you're homeless because you sold your house to afford a $35,000 dollar laptop.
>Put it on your lap
>3rd degree burns
No thanks
ML researcher here, same for me (although 128GB are enough most of the times)
>Who needs to think lol just shovel this data until linear algebra gods enlighten me
The absolute state of statistics
>Le assblasted wageslave that's gonna be replaced by algerba soon
What fucking year am I in?
On the one hand Win8/10 automatic swap configuration finally has adjusted to the reality of having more than 4 GB in your machine, on the other hand Red Hat 6 and 7 documentation recommends not exceeding swap space too much beyond 4 GB if there's likely never any need for it (besides hibernation).

It will, same as core i5/7 8th gen, and still no one wants to design laptops thicker for 4-5mm with better thermal solution
>he fell for the 128 GiB RAM meme
>mobile workstation
>still falling for the thin meme
Enjoy your throttle book clone.
My laptop literally only has a 256GB SSD. I don't have games or movies on it so it's perfectly fine. Still 138GB left.
Oh, it's about RAM. Never mind.
imagine if you could copy entire partition into ram
that sweet 11GB/s read speed
>mobile workstation
cool
>literally paper-thin mactoddler copycat design
ew
Everything about this screams 'bottleneck' too
you'll likely only see a MINOR performance increase compared to 16gb ram on the same processor
I could keep my entire root partition cached in RAM. It's a shame about the throttling. It would be nice if they still made laptops for men who don't get tired carrying a bag of groceries.
What is that thing next to the bottle
Bottle opener for people with atrophied muscles.
128GB is the bare minimum for windows 10
Onions lid-opener for people with AIDS. No joke.
>128 GB RAM
OK sure
>mfw 6-core Xeon
Must've run outta budget
rofl
iTODDLERS BTFO
> tfw 10K laptop
> 17 inch 4K
> 64GB of ECC RAM (up to 128)
> 8TB (4x2TB) of NVME SSD in Raid 0
> 6 core Xeon M, up to 4.4GHz
> 97Wh battery
> Nvidia Quadro GPU
just imagine the smell
this, is it not the norm to hire smart people to use less resources and doing the same job?
kek, nice edit
If you're actually using this as a workstation type device then you would
>tyrone jamal eyes 2 unsupervised laptops in the cafeteria
>one is a 10k dell
>the other one is a shinny fagbook from 2018
>tyrone jamal does the sane and takes the fagbook
>the tyronian stupidity saved the expensive workstation.
>all the ramlets itt
>Dell
What are the odds it'll have hinge and chassis issues?
high. even my XPS will randomly lose display if I fuck with the hinge.
>working for a company or university that won't even give you access to dedicated servers to run programs on that you end up having to buy an expensive ass computer to do it yourself
lmao
I think it's a good thing that we can just throw numbers at the computer and it's fast enough to get answers
I'm curious if we've solved the travelling salesman problem for all real-world values of travelling salesmen
This laptop could probably keep a small Alaskan village warm for the entire winter.
This obsession with ultra-thin laptops is holding back innovation. I blame Apple and their faggotry.
>my boyfriend who is HIV +
>meaning I may be HIV +
Faggots don't care, they just wanna act like degenerates and force their sexuality upon everywhere crying for acceptance of their deviant lifestyle. In my country they're responsible for over 70% of all HIV cases, they chronically irresponsible when taking care of their health.
Samefag reddit spacer
lmao
>2.70 ghz
kek
>get up to $317 back
It's a steal desu.
Everyone and their grandmother installing some shitware library like TF and calling themselves an ML researcher online these days...
>I'm curious if we've solved the travelling salesman problem for all real-world values of travelling salesmen
Apparently the travelling salesman problem is the key to developing AI.
I'm >66608779 and I'm not critiquing anybody I'm just astonished that they're talking about 128gb of ram and how its commonplace for them, not in a negative way desu
Yes, everyone read that XKCD comic. Congratulations, very topical.
Zbook Studio X360 is supposed to be right around the corner
I'm actually getting paid by a university to do it tho
They did, they spent almost 30k on hardware just for me since I got there 6 months ago
>I replied to everyone now what
Why are you doing that locally? Just throw it at AWS/GCP and it'll run faster and be cheaper once you consider the electricity and hardware costs.
Depends. Can it keep up with the simple homework needs of my kids? Can it run YouTube in 480 without being choppy or incoherent? What's the strength of the wifi signal?
Battery dies first
but does it have enough wam to run minecraft?
No one likes your shit meme, fuck off boomer.
>Convertible laptop with six core xeon and 32 gb of RAM
What the fuck. It looks so good. There must be a drawback.
No, I have some spreadsheets that I can't even open on machines with less than 32GB.
These are workstations, they are relatively uninteresting for normal people, doesn't mean they aren't useful and in some cases even necessary.
