hey guys, i'm posting from my new AMD build i assembled yesterday with your advice, thanks for that.
on my old box i used MPC-HC but i knew that i wasn't going to be able to use it any more after i migrated since it's in such a moribund state. what does Jow Forums use now? this, right? how can i configure it to get the highest quality from my hardware (GTX 1070)? there used to be some great guides around for MPC-HC but it's been a long-ass time since i've had anything to do with it.
sorry, to clarify: i'm looking for a decent video player that will use DXVA/CUDA and all that cool shit out-of-the-box with a minimum of configuration.

profile=gpu-hq in mpv.conf

>dxva/cuda I don't see why you would need that unless you're playing 4k videos or something

the last time i set it up that was a pre-requisite - either coreAVC or, later, madVR - to get your video card to process HD video. this will have been about five years ago, maybe longer. i'm a set-and-forget type with things like this because i have such a small idea what i'm doing with all of it.
do you guys reckon an interface augmentation for MPV (please not SMPlayer) or is there really enough to go with?

>on my old box i used MPC-HC but i knew that i wasn't going to be able to use it any more after i migrated since it's in such a moribund state. Please don't be one of those people who thinks software magicly stops working after it hasn't been updated for a week. Don't be a retard OP And FYI, MPC has already been forked. github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases This isn't the first time for the project being forked, people forget that it wasn't always MPC-HC, before that it was just MPC.
Nicholas Parker
hey nice, thanks user.
Robert Gonzalez
it's probably better to stick with this if you're already used to it and it's easier to set up than mpv.
Carter Garcia
I actually think mpv is easier to use, with it's detailed documentation.

>the last time i set it up that was a pre-requisite - either coreAVC or, later, madVR - to get your video card to process HD video. this will have been about five years ago, maybe longer. That must have been a while ago. Even five years ago, most PCs could software decode 1080p H.264. My old first generation Core 2 Duo could do it. These days software decoders are faster and the average computer hardware is much faster. Most people only need hardware decoding for stuff like 4K HEVC.
That said, you can enable hardware decoding in mpv with hwdec=auto

How the hell are you supposed to write shaders for this thing? I've found several implementations but the documentation on how to port these is missing or very unclear. Is there /any/ fucking tutorial about this instead of just a dry as sand doc?
Brody Thomas
Basically this. Its literally copy and pasting some lines from Jow Forums or the wiki and you're ready to go.
Mason Adams
Please keep using mpc-be with madvr.
Dominic Thompson
Where is MPC-HC moribund? They constantly update it
that is quite nice. last time i used SMPlayer it was slow and clunky and would spend whole minutes updating my font cache for no reason when i wanted to watch something.
have they pulled their socks up since then?
Ryan Reyes
>would spend whole minutes updating my font cache for no reason That's normal for... VLC that is !
