the best instance by far is the official instance at searx.me. the only problem with this is that this instance is hosted in Germany, so results using Google always return German results. For example, try searching for "MDN Array", and instead of getting English results, you get the German documentation for Arrays.

I tried this. They work great except for the fact that trying to use Google Images always returns Errors. Here are all the English instances I've found and they ALL result in an Error when trying to search Google Images:

Im German and *I* am annoyed with german-ized search results everywhere (usually by ip geolocation).

english language results are usually more complete / higher quality. often the first thing a German page says is something like

that's actually a big part of why I stopped using google years ago. It shouldn't be that hard to figure out that if my search keywords are in English then I'd like to please get English results, not local results mixed with irrelevant "personalized" results based on previous searches.

I remember back when I first "discovered" Google nearly two decades ago now. It was amazing how good it was at finding exactly what I was looking for. Now it's totally useless. It's a bit sad.

As for OPs problems, perhaps either running your own private instance or using some friends private instance would help you. The one I'm (ab)using isn't public.

You can use desktop addons on any firefox browser. Go into that 3-dot menu, you should have an "addons" option. If you don't have this then go here

Waterfox is terribly outdated so I'm not sure if the latest uBO works. If it doesn't then just use DNS66 instead of blokada, I just tested it and I don't have any ads even with a disabled adblock on Lightning and Firefox.
