i have a really old hard drive that is very particular about how it is formatted.
it will not quick format (yes i know this is not good)
it will also not format in ntfs or fat 32 properly

but i was able to create partitions just fine using win 95 master boot disk

is there some compatibility with the partition type i do not know about with older hardware?

cmd prompt will come up in with admin privs, type password if needed
in the command prompt type

list disk

there should be a list of drives. find the one you want to format
select disk X
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=ntfs quick
assign
exit
exit

Right now got my scripts set up to remotely silence it when I go to bed and unsilence when I wake up as kind of a compromise, but I waste a lot of battery this way when I'm asleep. Would be nicer if I could just turn it off but I'm not sure how to handle turning it back on. I could put it on a timer I guess but that would be annoying if I wake up early or hit the button accidentally or something. Any other good alternatives? I know PCs can have stuff like wireless wake on LAN but not sure what the equivalent for a phone is

Probably not. I recommend joining the military. If you're in a signal or intel job, you'll have at least a secret clearance, and get great technical training. Also, school is free while you're in, and if you get the GI Bill, you have a ton of cash for school after you get out. Free school, exp, and security clearance means easy to land a job when you get out.

Buy a laptop with cash via craigslist.
Buy a thumbdrive with cash via craigslist.
Don't use the use the laptop at home, don't use the thumbdrive on any of your other computers.
Go to a public wifi spot and download tails. Install that to the thumbdrive.
Chuck the HDD in the laptop.
Only use public wifi.
Boot off of tails, and spoof your MAC each time before you connect.
Try to not be in view of a camera when viewing. So stay in the parking lot. Go through the drive through first and get a drink. It looks less suspicious. Don't let you phone connect to the public wifi either. Although, if you're doing something illegal, don't bring it with you at all. Too easy to cross reference cellphone movement with wifi APs.

Oh, and use cash at the drive through. Wear sunglasses too. Take the plates off your car and put them in a window. If you get pulled over, tell the cop you just got the plates and need to get the bolts.

Yep, switch it up. Also public transport is ok if you can pay cash for it. Go to a mall or something, get a coffee, get the wifi password, and then leave. Walk out to a bench that's just within the wifi range. After a few times, you will see patterns for these places and their passwords. The main thing to keep in mind is cash and no phone.

Which should I keep and which should I return?
Priority = connection stability.
My pc is on wireless and I can't run an Ethernet cable. Every time my family starts watching a movie or something, my ping goes from a steady 40ms to 300 which makes any game unplayable.
We have 5mbps and 1 mbps up, and this is unable to be changed. I tried temporarily moving my pc and hardwiring it and the internet became stable even when they were streaming.
So ultimately DLink or netgear?
I know the DLink model is much newer. But the netgear one has been out for a long time and has quite good reviews.

I've had drives that didn't cooperate with the GUI tools, but using the terminal worked. After a clean/format/assign in terminal, it worked fine with the GUI tools.

1200(lowest end razor laptop)+500(GPUdock)+GPUprice and that's not including the lag. Either wait a couple months for the new cards to ship, or get a laptop that already has a card in it. Acer sells one with a 1080 in it for 1600. That's cheaper than the cheapest Razer laptop and the Razor core.

are any of you running a linux distro and using portable m-disc drives? what is the situation like for writing discs on linux at the moment? is it possible? currently looking at BDR-XD05S but there are no reviews describing if it works with either m-discs or linux. i suppose if you can write discs on linux there shouldn't be any problem with m-discs specifically.
