Discuss building, setting up your own homeserver and maintaining the services and demons on it. This is all about taking control over your own services. Not leaving things up to some weird company that doesn't have your best interests at heart.
Are you interested in learning GNU+Linux or BSD administration and configuration better? Becoming a openrc expert? want a cozy little BSD machine to run services on and interact with. Or practice more advanced and complicated networking setups.
Thinking about setting up a music server so I can keep all my music on one computer then access it sort of like spotify but hosted myself. Any ideas about how I'd go about this? I'm a total fucking retard btw.
Josiah Taylor
Subsonic. - Or any of the variants (subsonic is closed, there's lots of others open) Plex.
Samuel Jones
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Gonna install void on my old unused phenom rig right now and try to set it up. Will post results ITT
Cooper Price
If you are a total retard but can follow instruction, you can set this up with the >I want a NAS/HTPC/Plex what should I get? type hardware.
If you think that probably will be too much, buy some qnap / synology or whatever NAS device.
They'll have the software to run a media server by default, whatever needs configuring can be configured in a web interface - but mostly you just toss your MP3 or OGG or FLAC or whatever in the music folder, at which point it becomes available over DLNA/UpNp and over various network protocols and filesystems.
Grayson Young
Why's there still the HC1 in the Op?
Levi Gutierrez
Why wouldn't it be? There isn't any better device taking over for the HC1 or 2 yet, right?
Jace Taylor
>NAS >Pi >No SATA, USB3 or true Gigabit ethernet. Just get any cheap mobo and basic CPU with iGPU and ideally AES-NI.
Kevin Rodriguez
A bunch of people can make do with 20MB/s or whatever that will deliver.
At which point the Pi is like 4x cheaper than kitting out a cheap x86 machine, and also consumes less power.
GBE / USB3 / SATA is on the Odroids & stuff already, too, which only cost a bit more than a Pi.
x86 is only a good idea once it's starting to get more srs. 3+ HDD or SSD-tier performance, something that takes more processing power, 10GBE, stuff like that.
Mason Roberts
do you guys spin down you drives?
Henry Foster
Don't forget that if you are going headless, you will probably need a dummy VGA or HDMI. Something I wish people on here would talk about.
William King
a lot of people already have an x86 machine, or the parts to build one, just sitting around.
Brandon Brooks
uh
Joseph Miller
Really? I got this fanless x86 machine for $45 on eBay. It doesn't use much power, and smokes any shit pi out of the water.
shit/10. you're also electrical violating codes with that extension cord, they're for temporary use only. at least you have a actual server (assuming that isnt a MSA) unlike most of the retards in this thread.
Easton Phillips
it's an MSA 60 :^)
Easton Ross
oh great another LARPer
Thomas Scott
>you will probably need a dummy VGA or HDMI. Something I wish people on here would talk about. Why would you need that?
Nathaniel Diaz
He is a retard
Nolan Sanders
-1/10, ugh shit.
Why is it so fucking hard to fucking an aesthetically looking server setup? I live in an apartment so I can't keep it hidden, meaning it needs to look pleasing if it's going to be in my living room area.
Adding the good old pasta. Always up to debate and to update.
--> Quick Questions Quick Replies Why would I want a NAS/Homeserver? If you ask why then you don't need it.
>I want a NAS/HTPC/Plex what should I get? RPi3 or Odroid XU4/HC1. Odroid upper models has USB 3 and USB bus separated from the Ethernet one.
>B-But muh ARM Then check the onboard x86 like J4105B-ITX, J4205B-ITX or J4205-ITX. All of them have SATA and USB 3.
>What's the best [software] for doing [ask]? Specify you question and elaborate. If you want help put something from your side.
>Which disk is better for my homeserver? The general opinion minus some details are that WD Greens are enough if you deactivate parkdrive, and WD Red are Green overpriced. Also Toshiba and HGST are pretty good.
>Why do you need that much gear in an apartment? For my case, I want my rack to include my 4U Supermicro server, UPS, ProBox 8-bay chassis, Netgear switch and my desktop tower.
Pic-related is something similar to what I'd want.
Ryan Bennett
>Pic-related is something similar to what I'd want.
lol i don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a literal rack mount, in my picture is like, $400-500 of gear, most of which is the hard drives (10x2TB SAS drives, going to replace the last two later) i never look at it so why should i care about aesthetics?
Jeremiah Bennett
you'll feel better about using your server if you know it looks good and is well loved
Julian Cox
Ubuntu will not boot without an attached monitor.
I suppose I could fuck with xorg and run a dummy driver, but it's a pain in the ass if you want it headless with the ability to use a monitor if needed.
I only interact with my server with putty, but if you guys have better solutions let me know.
Oh, I also ran into the issue on Debian 9. This is an OS related issue apparently, I have no options in the bios regarding this.
>only use ssh >have a gui installed god you're retarded too
Joshua Ward
Do people utilize these pillows or are they used as a inside joke for decoration ?
James Davis
Nobody is talking about that because >Ubuntu will not boot without an attached monitor. Is bullshit. There are some (HP IIRC) desktops who refuse to boot without monitor but that's some BIOS shit and not related to the OS.
Asher Perez
i guess i could post here with all the fucking raspberry pi users
>utilise What do you mean? If I had one I'd probably hug it to fall asleep. Does that count?
Benjamin Robinson
>Ubuntu will not boot without an attached monitor
Robert Ward
I want a gui as an option because the PC is located in my living room but is not hooked up to my tv. Maybe someday I will run Kodi or something, hence why I have a gui installed . I actually have it set to boot into terminal. I start the lightdm service if needed. My server is mostly used as a nas and idle ram usage is 100mb.
Because of this, putty is all I really need.
Ryder Moore
>"Due to Ubuntu security setup, LIVA MINI PC won’t boot up without monitor plugged in under Ubuntu OS. So we suggest you to connect the monitor when first booting up, during the system power on, hot plugging of the monitor is acceptable.
>For more information to solve the issue, please check on official forum of Ubuntu:"
It's what my PC manufacturer is saying. I'm the guy with the liva mini PC.
Matthew Rivera
>I want a gui as an option because the PC is located in my living room >but is not hooked up to my tv As I said you're retarded.
Cooper King
That's not Ubuntu not booting though is it? That's your BIOS refusing to boot because it thinks you'll have trouble.
Dominic Thomas
Apparently it is a Ubuntu related issue, at least that is what my manufacturer is saying. The work around I keep hearing is to mess with xorg and I use a dummy driver.
Leo Collins
>an Ubuntu related issue With your BIOS, not with Ubuntu.
Jayden Robinson
Does it work with windows? Ask them to provide links to the launchpad bug and forum posts with details.
I'm pretty sure the chinks are lying.
Jordan Smith
>use linux >be too retarded to get it to boot headless >not even smart enough to use a type1 hypervisor to work around the issue >uses a dongle instead You would fit right in at Apple
Andrew James
Look, my manufacturer says there is no solution. I have no options in my bios regarding it and plenty of others are having the issue on other systems.
>my manufacturer says there is no solution Because it's their problem! Imagine them coming back to you and saying >lol yeah sorry about that buddy, we just took a shit on the production line and you bought it. Better luck next time.
Anthony Nelson
Ok cool. Its a $45 dollar pc so if what you are saying is true, fine. other people have my issue with different types if bios and don't have a solution.
My solution is to use a dummy VGA plug. If you have a better one, let me know.
Dominic Brooks
>If you have a better one >$45 dollar pc If you go cheap, do it proper, or wallow in shit.
You chose the latter.
Eli Martin
>thats AV and vidya equipment you tard To be fair AV industry including rack mount computer cases is where you will find a lot of interesting stuff for homelab.
Joseph Carter
I choose cheap because it also is very low power. I don't need a fucking rack in my house. I wanted a fanless x86 that has very low power. You can make dummy plugs easy and they are cheap to buy.
Angel Martin
Did you go cheap on reading comp too? I said if you go cheap, do it right.
You didn't do it right. There's a right way to do cheap, and I feel like you were told of it, then ran forty miles in the opposite direction.
Anthony Miller
It's not too uncommon to use a $4dummy plug. I'm not running at all. It was the cheapest PC that met my specs, I could not be happier with it.
Brandon Phillips
you wont, AV racks are generally shallow. 800mm deep is basically the minimum for servers
>inb4 some autistic supermicro case designed for atom boards
Xavier Gray
Atom boards are more than enough to get the job done. I have a kubernetes cluster of 4 A4 5100s serving NTP, RADIUS, Samba4 DC, FreeIPA and whatnot.
Of course it won't work for you if you just install corporate shit software based on java crap that takes 1TB of memory to draw a webpage.
Brayden Adams
>4 A4 5100 My RAID card is more powerful that your cluster
>NTP, RADIUS, Samba4 DC, FreeIPA So what you're saying is that you're doing jack shit
Zachary Rogers
The right tool for the right job retard. RAID cards are overrated shit when you have better software implementations like ZFS. Stay mad next->next->finish monkey.
Chase Flores
>I dont understand why you would want a BBU Your shitbox boards dont have NVDIMMs
Xavier Sanders
You don't need BBU when you can use SSD ZIL for sync operations. I wonder if there is a corporate java GUI for fixing stupidity.
Wyatt Jackson
>i dont understand the difference between ram and flash
Noah Hill
> I don't understand what a a sync I/O transaction is.
Thomas Martinez
I have a python script that is supposed to adjust my fans. How do I run it in freenas?
Josiah Brooks
you clearly dont understand the difference between sync and async io if you think that it is somehow relevant to this conversation
>that tilt to the left you should check if that rack has leveling feet. And assuming you dont own that place, your landlord will be pissed when there are permanent indentations in the carpeting from the casters.
Brody Sullivan
>what do you do with it? games and stuff. but seriously this is my whole media setup. on plex i serve over 900 1080p movies, 11000 720p tv episodes, 4800 720p anime episodes, 25000 songs, and almost 3TBs of family photo and videos. all that is split between the norco box and the 16 bay supermicro. the photo and videos are also backed up to an offsite server i have at my office about 20 miles away.
>> that wall isn't square. the dumbfuck who owned this house before me put in a closet in the basement and somehow didn't make a wall straight. i had a guy quote me $2500 to fix that. i told him to fuck off.
Luke Rodriguez
>basement.
you live in Kansas don't you.?
Samuel Williams
Thank you kind OP, this should be in every thread.
If you squint you can see a bunch of drives on top of my rack. That's all cold spares for each array that I have.
Lincoln Carter
>buy klein ethernet crimper tool >its a "pass through" type >says it works on all "standard modular" and "passthough" connectors >just notice is says "doesnt work on standard connectors" three lines down whats the fucking difference? how many are there? standard, standard modular, passthough? I get the passthough ones now, but whats standard and standard modular? wiki says modular means its detachable
>also where the fuck are you guys getting 30 drives from I was giving you the benefit of the doubt because you said you had no hot spares. The only good reason for that would be because you don't have any bays free.
Turns out you're not worth benefit of the doubt. Crawl backwards into the sea.
