Looks like it only occurs when hardware acceleration is turned on.

This doesn't solve your problem with vlc, but I recommend you try mpv. It works perfectly and solved all my playback issues like this in vlc.

Not our problem.

>VLC's fucked
Nah, it works as it should.

install mpv

not nearly enough options

>be me, straight(homosexual) white(nigger) male(s.oy)
>try to torrent some gay porn for research purposes
>stalls at 4% but i won't let a little problem like that stop my research
>open up the incomplete download in vlc because vlc plays anything
>mfw it doesn't play
>clearly this is a problem with vlc

that's tyrone saying 'your mom gay'. 'bout the furthest thing from gay porn you can get.

No clue what you're on about, m8. If you're OP;
Does it play in other media players?
Do other videos have the same problem?
Assuming that it's a corrupted file, why not download a good copy or see what ffmpeg can make of it if you try to transcode it?
Do you understand the phrase, "stupid questions thread"?

based vlc punishing commie viewers

You answered your own question: CCCP

What's wrong with VLC?

mpv. If you think there aren't enough options then open a config file.

Clearly you didn't read the second post, in which I stated that I had discovered the problem went away when I turned off hardware acceleration.

It's almost as if hardware and software decoding don't work the same way and subtle corruptions in the source data can yield different results.
I've already told you what to do. Faggot.

It's not corruptions. I've tested it with many other videos and all behave the exact same way.

Hmm. Seems to be only H.264, I've tested again with MPEG-4 and VP8 and they work fine.

>taking the bait seriously
This is just commies propaganda, leave the thread

Good. What's the bit depth of the files which exhibit the problem? 10 bit tends to be buggy. Grab mediainfo, run it against one of the files and dump output here.
I would still recommend that you reencode one with ffmpeg using defaults as a test.

Handbrake, my man. Does everything I need it to.
10-bit actually works fine. It's just the regular H.264 which doesn't work.

Ok but run mediainfo against one of the files which doesn't work. H.264 is the container and the video stream will probably be encoded with AVC (standard) or HEVC (smaller files, hardware decode is often not supported) and probably 8 or 10 bit. What's your video card, driver and OS?

Nvidia GTX 1060 mobile. Latest driver which is the game ready driver version 398.36. Windows 10 1803 17134.112. This is a brand new problem that I only discovered a week or so ago and never had a problem with. The multiple files I mentioned came from multiple sources - torrent, YouTube, and straight from Handbrake.

install gentoo, then mpv on it

Boy, aren't you the most hilarious person to walk the earth.

You're free to dismiss genuine advice as a joke, the real joke will be on you.

vlc is fine you are an idiot and probably activated the video effects with your brownian mouse motion

And when genuine advice comes up, I'll pay attention to it.

Read thread. H.264 video codec on hardware acceleration is the only thing that causes this.

If that is really the case (which i highly doubt from your screencap ) upload the h.264 file and post it to the vlc forum

Ok and the mediainfo output?

OP do not fear I can install linux and I have a black belt in hacking

It sounds like your VLC has a bug when hardware acceleration is turned on.

This can be caused by millions of tiny possible bugs in VLC, Windows, or the Nvidia drivers. Any single error in millions and millions of lines of code could do it.

Since VLC is open-source, read the hardware accel source code to find the bug, then commit a change to the VLC git.

Well, that's easy for me of course... I already found the bug and fixed it, but only for my hacked VLC version. For you maybe it's a little too hard XDXDWWWW

But, there's an easier way...

turn it off

Why does /tv/ and Jow Forums hate VLC?

>muh options
I hear this from time to time when people criticize MPV. And it makes me wonder: what are you people trying to do besides watch videos? Because MPV can watch videos with ZERO (0) playback issues... but rather than watch videos, you would rather dick around with "options?" lol

mpc-hc

it is a very hit-and-miss player

Meh I have no issues with it, all I use it for is tv/movies, all it needs to do is play the video.

I only use it because windows media player sucks monumental ass and will barely play different file types.

I don't actually see a qualitative difference between media players

It actually has more than other media players.

>I only use it because windows media player sucks
Typical VLC user. Doesn't know any better.

Attached: smplayer-logo.png (240x240, 52K)

Becuase there are multiple better players yet baby ducks and tech illiterates don't want to let go because they dont like change.

Communism failed again?
What a surprise.

All I need a media player to do is play the movie/tv show
What is the actual qualitative difference between players?
They all show the video

Not baiting, what is the actual difference?

And some do it better. People who understand programming and video processing will understand this. I dont expect people like you to. Rendering can be better, colors can be better, upscaling can be better. Most use defaults so they wouldnt know this. vlc always shit itself when playing large remuxes for me too.
