what is computer

lemme guess, opening it up is a chore.
At least please be arm based

redpill me on surface

no, it sucs

the tablet ,the laptop ,the art studio or the one you put on the wall?

>arm based
Do you really need a portable facebook machine that isn't your phone?

no i just want to know if it will be power efficient in order to consider it as a tablet to use linux on.

I've been meaning to grab a tablet under 100, but I don't mind opening and returning to Best Buy to get a touchscreen laptop at a higher price.

I'd consider getting it as a lightweight device for school shit but they need to fix their QC issues first. At this point I expect it will have the sleep issues of the SP4 and SB plus some keyboard connection issue like those 2 models

Why are CISC scum so stupid?

He just wants good battery.

Surface pros are great so long as you're not the one paying

the thing is if is painful to change the battery it would be at least nice to know that it is power efficient and will last a long time

won.. what?

> totally unrepairable
> clued together "sealed" chassis
> everything soldered
> ridiculously overpriced
> basically copied everything that makes Apples products a bad choice
it's fine if your employer pays for it and handles warranty (which you'll need) and "repairs" it by replacing the entire thing

the idea isn't as dumb as it seems, many don't need more than a portable facebook machine with a real keyboard and bigger IPS screen. My 13.3" laptop has a N4200 Intel CPU and 4 GB RAM. And a IPS screen (not touch). It really is a weak machine. It's fine for writing some e-mails or code or browsing some web pages or watching some tv show on a bus/train/whatever. It's really limited but it's fine for it's purpose.

EXTREMELY HIGH failure rate.

Apparently it can quick charge 80% in 60 minutes.

We assure you it's not Windows RT. It's not Windows Phone. It's not a UMPC from 2005 repackaged. It only looks like one. This is something completely different. That's what we're gonna say.

>totally unrepairable
Wtf would you actually be able to repair if you could get into it? Everything is micro-soldered these days.

>64gb hd
>$400
the people who run MS are the most brain dead idiots ever, its only a matter of time before China or India finally replace MS with a decent desktop OS

awesome machine as a student. very fragile. expensive

>pentium
Yeah nah

If only such an OS existed.

Attached: 1358701982050.jpg (1800x1200, 1.02M)

I'm intrigued.
I "need" a tablet to read scientific papers and maybe annotate them, and I don't wanna shell out $1000 for an ipad, so this could be interesting.
How big is it, and can I run lunix on it?

Garbage.
My ThinkPad is cheaper than that, and it's got a 500gb ssd

That tard thinks the only mark of a good OS is whether or not it plays his little games for him.

How shit are its specs compared to the Surface Pro 3?

My dad's been fucking desperate to get a cheaper Surface Pro 3 with a 10'' screen instead of 12''. Is the processor terrible in comparison?

It's Kaby Lake dual-core

ark.intel.com/products/122697/Intel-Pentium-Processor-4415Y-2M-Cache-1_60-GHz

Yeah but can you use it as tablet?

>implying anyone will actually buy it

The 2018 ipad is 330 and supports apple pencil
Essentially a first gen ipad pro (9.7”) for less monies

This is much more useful than any iPad, you can run real Windows desktop class software and install software than you need, not the crippled walled garden iOS shit on iPad

Can I install lignux on it?

Are the failure rates really as bad as people here are saying?

Won Surface Pro when it came out. Great tablet but no way I would have paid for it

If this is gonna be anything like the 10.8" Surface 3 I regretfully bought a couple years ago its gonna be shit

Oh boy a zune in tablet form what could possibly go wrong.

I would go for the $399 one for browsing and media stuff, my heavy laptop with it's fans is too uncomfortable and loud for that

Linux has games in 2018. Probably more quantity than Windows.

>Linux
>more games than Windows

youtube.com/watch?v=gvdf5n-zI14

It's a fucking pentium, mate. You can guess it yourself.

Linux has much better backwards compatibility with windows software than current windows does. Wine runs approximately all games. There's like 1% of programs that do not run under wine. It definitely has MORE games. Not the latest games but probably has the best games overall.

>unironically believe this

Attached: 1526407237135.jpg (200x200, 20K)

Too bad surfaces are shit and you immediately see how slow it is when opening anything that isn't facebook or time documents.

Can it run Red Alert 2? This all I need to know.

Attached: pajeet.jpg (1853x1000, 325K)

Honestly, tablets are a stupid technology.

>W10
>winning anything
If it was 7 or 8.1 I would've pulled the trigger on one.

Why the fuck is the laptop so expensive? It's insane

>Linux has much better backwards compatibility with windows software than current windows does
No matter how many times you post this, it will never be true. Stay delusional.

It's complete shit though.

Fuck off schizo

Because it's not meant to scare off OEMs who still make Microsoft money.

Always been true.

Twice the failure rates of Apple's machines based on a 2017 winter survey. We're talking like 25%

ARM is dogshit though. Uses 1/10th the power of x86 but has 1/100th the raw power.

>dual core
>have to pay an extra hundred at least for the keyboard
>64gb
>4gb ram

Attached: ff.jpg (1080x1080, 174K)

Won what? You're paying 400 bucks for a shitty tablet with 4GB of underpowered ram and 64gb of storage.
Dual core processor which was launched in early 2017. 1.6 Ghz clock LMAO
100 dollars extra for a keyboard.
Is this 2014?
At this point we have superior chinkshit for $200

Attached: o-embarrassed-facebook.jpg?w=672&h=372&crop=1.jpg (672x372, 37K)

>Shitty dual core
>4 GB of soldered RAM
>128 GB soldered storage

I'd buy it. I'd use it solely as a 4chin machine.

You can't even swap the battery or upgrade the SSD
And some models had fans, guess who won't be cleaning those ever?

You definitely are staying delusional.

I love it. It's perfect as a dedicated twitch/porn/hentai VN machine while in bed

does it have amd? I only buy amd hardware.

Holy shit, 64gb storage in a 400$ machine. Are we back in 1998? God fucking damn

Attached: ok-retard.jpg (1280x960, 109K)

64gb in a machine that doesn't have a disk? thats not bad.

My 200$ chinkphone has 128GB

1998 would've been around 9GB.

It is bad. Anything less than 128 GB on a Windows machine is just barely usable.
The system alone is going to take up nearly half of that 64GB, and even more when it keeps the previous version of Windows around for a while after feature updates.

Keeping the previous version takes up nearly half of 64. Without doing that, it's only taking up at most 1/4.

They're pretty good.
That said every single person that I've known that has owned one out side of a business use ended up just using a regular laptop after a year or two. People VASTLY underestimate the need for a (good) keyboard.

What is it anyway? I am a sucker for "2-in-1" "transformer" "hybrid" and something tells me Surface is that. But it is kind of too pricey.

In 8.1 they added CompactOS so you can shave off an additional 10%~40% depending on how much performance you're willing to sacrifice.

Wrong, without keeping a previous version, Windows 10's \Windows\ dir takes up about 24GB.

And this would no doubt be awful on a machine with a Pentium and eMMC storage.

Probably

CompactOS shouldn't have any noticable impact, well maybe with these budget systems it's a different story.

No it does not. Please stop talking out of your ass. 14gb here.

Eh? This is with 30GB of NieR Automata installed.

Attached: Untitled.png (363x499, 15K)

It already exists, and it's called Deepin

>t. had to remove as much shit as possible from his OS because he couldn't afford a real SSD

This thread made me fire up windirstat and made me realize I had 264MB of Princess Tutu scans that needed to be converted to jpeg.

Full blown Windows on an underpowered CPU, slow small storage, and only a floppy chicklet style keyboard? Over $500 for the whole package? Do you really hate yourself that bad

I’m torn between surface and a MacBook, money isn’t an object but it needs portability (13 inch) good battery life and something better than intel onboard graphics, are there othe laptops?

Friendly reminder that the only value of Windows tablets are that you can run full versions of Microsoft office, take notes in OneNote and view/annotate PDFs. Though you can also get a proper video player as well as a file manager.

>2018
>ms is just now getting around to copying apple

Can we run Linux on it?

Attached: 965B9ED5-A274-4C70-BF63-5880CC04B3CE.png (1853x1000, 1.29M)

Windows has absolutely absurd backwards compatibility. What the fuck are you on? Shit running in Wine loves to crash, especially games. It's also slow as a dog sometimes for no reason.

None of what you said is true though DX9 is probly older than most of the kids on Jow Forums. Not saying wine has a baby tier skill requirement but running it properly everything is fine with no UNEXPECTED speed problems. There is some performance loss generally.

>portable
>not Intel HD
then you're looking into huge bulky gaming laptops tho

Can I do gamedev on it?
Also, any laptop suggestion for gamedev

I guess gamedev needs good gaming hardware if not better, that would start at $1k minimum and Intel HD can't even really run the games you are developing

399 with the keyboard would have been nice
299 without would have been nice
I don't get this price point though, are they determined to only sell to schools or something? Consumer wise they'll just go for another cheap laptop or a chromebook.

There are laptops with GTX 1060 that aren't so bulky. Granted they're not quite as thin and light as a Surface or MacBook Pro, but bulky certainly isn't a word that would be used to describe them either.

It’s the worse failure rate, confirmed by ConsumerReports.

Hijacking this thread. I need a laptop for studying and watching videos on. It needs to be lightweight, have a great 1080p screen and be able to play torrented bluray files.

I don't have a budget, but the cheapest I can get with these things is good enough. I won't use it a lot.

You can but doing so on a lowered power system isn't the best idea.
Better choices would be;
Huawei Matebook X
Surface Laptop
HP Spectre x360
Dell XPS 13/15

Basically higher end laptops, far more costly, but with enough specs that debugging won't be a complete slog.
Of course, this is assuming you're going to be doing full standard game development, you could probably get away with a low power system if you're just editing some stuff on the go and then doing any heavy lifting at home with another system.

Any chromebook should be capable of doing so, although make sure you aren't picking up one with a lower screen res.

oh, damn :/
Are there any other alternatives that don't suck in that price range? All Android tablets I find are outdated or overpriced and the iPad seems like the only sane option

Someone needs to compete with Apple

I'm from a poor country. I actually like this idea. What are the "downgrades"? CPU or memory or maybe they are trying to push their windows 10s? If it'll be usable and with a pen and a keyboard, I'm upgrading my m3 7y30 chink cube.

Buying non-chinese stuff means it won't come with numerous defects, mismatched parts, and random specifications. In case of cube mix+, 1.5 year later, nobody still knows what the usb c is really capable of, including how the usb c charging works.

>Also, any laptop suggestion for gamedev
Prestigio SmartBook 133S
