Just got my grades back for the first half of my third year at Uni (software eng with honours) and got a B+ overall (were this the only factor in honours, I'd get 2-1, second class first div.)
In your experience, how important are good grades in the dev industry? How important are bad grades?
Nathan Wilson
Samefag posting copypasta bs.

How important are bad grades? Grades matter, but professors also do things like weight grades and offer extra credit.
The main thing is how well you grasped the concepts, and if you worked on anything with the tools you learned.
Did you enjoy the course?

Yeah, was great fun in the end. Did a group project that went horrible but learned a lot from those mistakes and it continues full year so I should be able to rectify it.

>Yeah, was great fun in the end. Did a group project that went horrible but learned a lot from those mistakes and it continues full year so I should be able to rectify it. Then keep it up. Having fun doing something is the greatest motivator. Try to start networking with people, and getting letters of recommendation and places to intern from your professors.
>So it's just apple being fuckheads then? Pretty much. You have to have their software on all of you devices that you want to sync with.

Are you trying to...
-Get into grad school? -Work for Google? -Work for a large company right out of college?
if so, grades matter
If not, get whatever job and hop jobs til you get where you want. If you make around a 3 from a good college, you can ask for about $75-80k even in shitty areas. Much higher in big cities.
Adam Johnson
That was the plan but I figured I'd ask here if there were any specific good ones people have used in the past. I'll just get to it though, no time like the present.

Holy shit I hate this shitty board. Why don't you infants use your words to communicate instead of dragging your flaccid penis across things you don't like. I didn't believe at first that the earlier sqt was a contrived spamfest, but I saw someone ask how to tag images, to which someone replied suggesting Hydrus out of context, to which the first user replied thank you. I guess that could happen, but I find it really lowest common denominator to just drop a link saying "blindly conform to seeing if this fits your needs." If it were me I'd criticize them then apprehensively thank them, to which they'd probably vomit something about "spoonfeeding" since they're really not here to educate the willing. Every time.
ANYWAY..... I want to overlay the rightmost part of my browser with a transparent image of my choosing. Is such a thing even possible? Transparent as in literally see-through by an arbitrary percentage (or at least such that text is legible behind it). Alpha channel being respected would be nice as well. I can use Impression Eyes to even make images stay on top, which I've done before for a small crop, but it's certainly not transparent at all.
I'm getting a lot of screen tearing when playing games and watching videos. I already turned on V-Sync on the Nvidia panel yet still see a few tears when there is fast movement onscreen.
What do you use to burn in test a CPU? I need to check if my system is thermal throttling on high temperatures.

I'm trying to find a 32 inch TV that doesn't suck balls. I just want something to hang over my battlestation so I can play vidya without turning away and maybe watch some TV on. I don't care about streaming shit or smart shit. I'm mostly going to be listening to it on headphones through an optical audio cable, so speaker quality is not a big deal but it would be nice. The thing I'm primarily worried about is getting as good a picture quality possible for my admittedly shitty budget. I can't go higher than maybe $350.
amazon.com/dp/B01N2UQ43P This is what I"ve been recommended so far, but I don't know. If anyone has any useful input that would be great.
Angel Long
Use Prime95.
>I need to check if my system is thermal throttling on high temperatures. Desktop or laptop? If desktop, which heatsink fan?
Also run HWMonitor while you run it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I wish I was more open minded back in the day when this place was more fun with quality posters..
this is the first computer which i've built myself back in early 2017 it can run pretty much any game smoothly at high quality, but the only issues i have is that about every 5-6 minutes in a game session, it'll freeze completely for about 1-2 seconds, audio and visual, and then resume normally as if nothing happened, this repeats indefinitely
the other thing is that even more rarely, on specific games like tomb raider, the audio will suddenly cut out on a freeze but it won't return
any idea on how to solve? i've updated the graphics driver, my only thought is that i may have fucked something during initial build, like putting something on the solid state drive when it should've been put on the hard drive
posted in last thread and will eventually get gpu and power source tested but curious if there's anything i can check in the meantime
Why is the bios of my acerZG5 laptop resetting every time, especially the system time and its not instantly but after I power it off for like 1 hour.
Juan Ortiz
I'm having this problem with ShareX, I can't record videos with audio. I had this same issue more than once in the past but I'm not sure how I fixed it (or why it represented itself). I already uninstalling ffmpeg.exe and the recorder devices and reinstalling them but it didn't make any difference.
Is there any benefit to going over 60hz on a monitor if you don't play reaction-based shooters?

For a dumb TV I'd recommend checking out local pawn shops. You can get 1080p dumb TVs for cheap.

Run task manager in the background, with the CPU and RAM charts running. Do the same with some GPU usage software, like Afterburner. See if anything spikes or flatlines.

If you're not dropping below 60Hz, yeah. If not, then I recommend a monitor with Gsync or FreeSync depending on what you have.

what does ipx7 waterproof actually mean, I looked it up >IPX7 – Full splashdown accepted captain. If you drop your device in water up to 3 feet (1 meter but this is ‘Merica and we don’t do the metric system. USA USA USA) your device is still going to work. but does that mean if I wanted to take a shower with them on or go in heavy rain with them on I'll be fine?

Is it better to add another two sticks of 8gb ram to my existing two of 8gb, or to get two sticks of 16gb?
I want a sub-€1000 laptop with a good display and keyboard. Something nice looking would be a bonus, about 14/15". In Europe.
A LOT of sub-€1000 laptops have shit-tier screens. And the ones that don't have shit keyboards.
What is my best option? I thought about the Asus UX430UA, or maybe the IdeaPad 720, but not sure if they're the best. I love the look of the Matebook X Pro but it's not easily available in Europe and might be too expensive anyway.
The four sticks will be cheaper, and faster, if your motherboard supports quad channel memory.

Correcting myself a bit here about Bitdefender and Avast. I said that the basic paid version of both were about on par. Turns out Bitdefender has an extra cheap paid version called Antivirus Plus, which is inferior to Avast's cheapest paid product, it's Bitdefender's second-cheapest paid product with that.
So the versions that are on par with each other are called Internet Security for both brands.
Are 7th Gen still good laptops? There's a lot of talk about the jump to 8th Gen and how you shouldn't get last gen stuff. Or is that bullshit?

Well viewing images and dynamic websites properly for starters
Whenever i enable this POS extension most images won't load and many sites are broken/get displayed in raw text only if at all
Then i disable it and wham everything's dandy again

Shouldn't be doing that if you're using the latest version and a current mainstream browser. It's pretty rare it breaks something for me. Could be an interaction with some other plugin. The closest things I would recommend use list based filtering instead, like ublock/umatrix.
Liam Reed
I was thinking of something that didn't need additional addons but thanks anyway, I suppose Chrome keeps track of this to show the 8 most frequent sites on the new page in order of most visits.

Over the last 10 years the only thing that's really improved in Intel processors is how much energy they use. That's part of why people like the older Thinkpads and Dells, they perform great, and the keyboards are nicer than that of a thin and light.

I bought on 3 different dates 2 HDD (WD) from Amazon, and all the 6 were faulty, they could not even be recognized from my PC. Was I just very unlucky or I'm doing something wrong? I used their cable on a port I always use and there were a continuos series of beeps; I used another port with a cable of mine, and no sound; this with all the 6 HDD, and never recognized.

I own quite weak laptop but I need to run recourse hungry programm. Are there any (ffree?) services that provide cloud-based casual desktop computing? For example - I login into generic cloud desktop with similar to teamviewer interface, download and install the program and just run it as if I got many times better processor and ram?

Has anyone here gone dumpster diving for stuff like consumer electronics and/or parts? I was thinking in places near electronics retailers or the likes.
I have 8GB of RAM and I can't install the Fitgirl repack of Max Payne 3. At some point "CLS-srep_x64.exe" runs out of memory and stops responding.
I've tried changing the virtual memory to 12GB - once on the boot partition and the other time on the partition where the install is taking place. Neither one worked.
On a related note, Speccy shows the 2400Mhz stick of RAM I have is running at 1199Mhz. What gives? My CPU and mobo shouldn't be throttling it (R5 1600 / B350 Tomahawk).
Dominic Edwards
Oh, and clearing out the Temp folder where "CLS-srep_x64.exe" was beforehand didn't help either.

Why do my sound levels keep resetting to some random number after I restart my pc? I usually notice this after having used Discord for a bit, is there a correlation between the two?
Would this be a good laptop for the price? Ideally I would want to spend less than $600 but I am willing to go a bit higher if its worth it.

why does my x270's trackpoint re-calibrate so fucking often it does it once every minute and a half on average, taking up to two minutes to stop drifting when it's real bad
my t430 did it maybe every 10 minutes and it never took more than 10 seconds

/dpt/ is bulying me, can someone here shed light on this?
Lads, I want to learn to properly instead of just slapping snippets together and shit like some kind of caveman. So I looked into SCM, and I don't trust the cucks who run these sites, so I'd like to run my little repository. So tell me if this is viable: RhodeCode running a Mercurial server with TortoiseHg for a client as it interfaces with Git since I'll have to deal with Github crap at some point. But there's one thing I don't know SCMs allow since their whole point is to keep all versions neat and separate. You know how Firefox lists all the older versions of each add-on? I'd like to add all versions of some addons since the fags who made them often never bothered with a SCM either. It should be okay if I just start a project with the oldest version, then make a commit with the next version and so on, right? In case I skip a version by accident and want to insert it between two existing commits, is that possible? Or at least could I roll back all commits until the point it should be, commit that missing version, then commit all the posterior versions back again?
I have a Thinkpad P50 that has an accidental damage warranty from Lenovo. How should I destroy the laptop before the end of the warranty so I get a new one?

Well...they worked! Are the usb2.0 ports not directly connected to the MB a no-no for a 2.5 HDD? I had to use usb3.0 on the back of my case, despite the manual says it's ok tu use a 2.0! Isn't it weird?

I have been thinking about replacing my old monitors with an ultrawide monitor. After a coworker explained to me how he uses Windows 10 "Connect to a wireless display" instead of display cables, I've been trying to find out if there are any ultrawide displays that support this. My coworkers only uses TV's. Anyone know if there are any?
