Why 494949? That's about 6.5% luma. By the time you get down to around 595959 or so, you're dealing with single digit luma levels.

To convert any luma value to srgb: s = 255*(l^(1/2.2))
To convert any srgb value to luma: l = (s/255)^2.2
50% luma is BABABA.
25% luma is 8A8A8A.
12.5% luma is 636363.
and so.
Try mixing these with color channels and you'll notice stepping relatively up and down keeps the same hue.

Absolutely. Very very dim luma levels are hard to make out, and very bright luma levels cause higher retinal cell damage. Both create eye strain.

There's little value in arbitrary srgb levels even when the bits align. What you want to work out is your luma because that's what your eye sees.

And what is the optimal luma (on average), from which I tune mine?
