By a strict definition of "virus" there has been 1 or 2 over the years.

Some Linux software however is vulnerable to various local and remote exploits, which can lead to a rootkit being installed. Linux software is also rife with default passwords and the internet is flooded with automated scanning software that will try them all on any port open to the internet.

Linux AV software is mostly used to scan and quarantine files before they get to the user. Like an upload page or an server would scan all incoming email attachments.
