I'm trying to install windows onto an old hard drive that has nothing on it. The HDD is recognised in the bios and boot menu.
However, Windows 7 installation (using USB) refuses to locate the HDD at all. I've tried everything I can think of and google told me to do the same shit I've already done.
It's a WD5000LPVX HDD (Laptop HDD) and I have it connected to my Optiplex 790.

>I have it connected Is it an external drive? AFAIK Windows refuses to be installed on removable drives
July 16, 2018 - 07:32
It's connected through sata. It's not an external Hdd

Try using an OS that isn't shit.
July 16, 2018 - 07:49

July 16, 2018 - 07:50
Windows shit belongs on /v/.
July 16, 2018 - 07:53
Don't use modified images. Use the official ISO:mirror.corenoc.de /digitalrivercontent.net /

i've had a similar problem in the past. turned out to be that my iso copy of win7 was corrupted. i downloaded the official copy off microsoft's website, verified the checksum and it installed fine after. not saying thats whats happening with you. but it fixed it for me in the past

Make sure you're running in legacy bios.
July 16, 2018 - 08:02
This
UEFI should be disabled Legacy boot enabled Secure boot disabled
July 16, 2018 - 08:04
Windows 7 doesnt work nice with uefi and gpt
July 16, 2018 - 08:05
It works in UEFI and GPT just fine. OP has a modified ISO.
July 16, 2018 - 08:09
Maybe on 2-3 motherboards on the planet. I've tried it on 3 PCs with an original iso and it freezes on the loading screen.
July 16, 2018 - 08:10
I'll try another iso and report back.
July 16, 2018 - 08:11
I tried it on multiple laptops, it always worked.
July 16, 2018 - 08:11
Legacy is enabled
However, I can't find Secure boot anywhere.
July 16, 2018 - 08:13
There is no secure boot on legacy, it's a UEFI feature.

Boot linux from USB and scan HDD for errors
July 16, 2018 - 09:00
I think your HDD is cooked. Do what other user said and liveboot linux, run gparted.
July 16, 2018 - 09:01
Do manual partition in CMD. If you don't know how Google
July 16, 2018 - 09:02
its usually a sata or usb setting that causes these errors. setting legacy usb mode usually lets the installer comlpete, or put the non legacy usb drivers on the installation media

I've had multiple drives that are still detected in bios but fail to spin up.
Check to see if the HDD is actually spinning up successfully.
July 16, 2018 - 09:09
the WD5000LPVX is a SATA3 HDD and you need to make sure you have the SATA drivers for Windows. Newer versions with the various SPs already include the drivers, older ones don't. Google for how to load the driver during installation. Good luck!
July 16, 2018 - 09:10
I've checked that and yeah it is spinning.
July 16, 2018 - 09:10
This lazy fool doesn't want to diagnose through linux, stop helping him.
July 16, 2018 - 09:12
I'm creating a live boot now.
July 16, 2018 - 09:14

July 16, 2018 - 09:26
You know you can get gParted standalone, right?
July 16, 2018 - 09:28
It's ok, Ubuntu is loading.
July 16, 2018 - 09:28
You didn't know? Here: gparted.org /
July 16, 2018 - 09:29
Fuck this, just quit and give your PC to a local repair shop.
July 16, 2018 - 09:34
Ubuntu isnt loading. Getting standalone GParted.
July 16, 2018 - 09:37
:) Poor you. Get the i686 version. Or anything *86.
July 16, 2018 - 09:42
Also try booting it with HDD unplugged. Shot HDD could be hanging the system.
July 16, 2018 - 09:44
It does that sometimes, format it in Linux first or just quick dban
July 16, 2018 - 09:46
It wouldn't boot with the HDD plugged in.
Without the HDD this came up.
Attached: 20180716_214957.jpg (2048x1152, 788K)
July 16, 2018 - 09:51
It boots without the HDD in

July 16, 2018 - 09:53
Does the HDD spin? Do you have a SATA to USB around to plug it on the fly?
July 16, 2018 - 09:55
I don't have a sata to usb unfortunately.
July 16, 2018 - 09:56
Oh, nvm, you said you see it. Well, until you find a SATA to USB there's not much you can do.
July 16, 2018 - 09:58
Diskpart shows nothing? What about BIOS, does it detect it by any chance?
July 16, 2018 - 10:00
Do you have discord or something I could add you on?
July 16, 2018 - 10:02
Try replacing satan cable?
July 16, 2018 - 10:02
BIOS detects it perfectly fine. Windows installation doesn't. Also it appears to prevent any live OS from booting.
July 16, 2018 - 10:03
Sounds like a BIOS issue. What MB and processor you're using ?
July 16, 2018 - 10:04
After leaving it for a bit this finally popped up.

Watch the average Jow Forumsman amased and assblasted, at the same time, by the fact that a woman is better than him at something he's supposed to be good at. Always funny.

Procressor: I5-2500
Idk the motherboard. Standard motherboard for 790SFF
July 16, 2018 - 10:11
Click on the /dev/sda (3.83 GiB) button and choose the hard drive. Unmount and format to fat32.
July 16, 2018 - 10:12
Did you update your BIOS you fag?
If you don't have the latest you are a brainlet.
This changelog mentions shit but that's not the latest one. So get the latest one and don't come back until you flashed it.dell.com /support /home /en /us /robsdt1 /Drivers /DriversDetails?driverId=FM1KX
July 16, 2018 - 10:13
He said BIOS can see the HDD. Does it hurt to be retarded?
July 16, 2018 - 10:14
Stop trying to be me. Remove that nametag
July 16, 2018 - 10:15
Let's just rule out the BIOS first you incompetent fuck. So let him update.
July 16, 2018 - 10:15
When I first started using this name years ago I did not intend it to be unique.
July 16, 2018 - 10:17
Here it is shown in the bios

July 16, 2018 - 10:19
It's ruled out already - BIOS works properly. Windows installer does not rely on BIOS IO for writing anyway. > BUT HUH UPDATES! MUH VULNERABILITIES! MUH LATEST VERSION NUMBER!!! kys
July 16, 2018 - 10:19
Just to confirm, you got the image fromAnd you made sure UEFI is disabled, and legacy rom enabled? Check out the following404techsupport.com /2013 /03 /14 /configuring-dell-uefi-bios-to-legacy-mode-to-install-windows-7 /
July 16, 2018 - 10:19
I'm just messing with you, you should relax and stop being so uptight
July 16, 2018 - 10:20
Still update to the latest. It's not about vulnerabilities. Dell had a reason to push out a BIOS update. It means their old BIOS was trash.
July 16, 2018 - 10:23
current state of Jow Forums
July 16, 2018 - 10:24
>MS had a reason to push Windows 10. It means previous versions were trash. Don't fix what ain't broken.
July 16, 2018 - 10:26
Its updated.

July 16, 2018 - 10:28
Yes. And that reason what money and your data. Go tell Microsoft. I am on Linux.
July 16, 2018 - 10:28
No point in updating if it ain't broke. OPs problem is bios settings most likely as pointed out in
July 16, 2018 - 10:29
I don't think that does anything DESU. It could be the power supply. Could be the drive. Could be the firmware on the drive.
July 16, 2018 - 10:31
Is it a modern mobo? You will probably need to patch ISO with your mobo HDD controller drivers then.
July 16, 2018 - 10:37
Linux won't see the HDD either.
July 16, 2018 - 10:37
It's Dell OEM board. Probably the drivers are included. You can load the drivers if you want in the installer but doubt you will need that.
