Is this worth getting for $20? Is there a better stick I should get instead? I don't mind paying more

bump

just buy a raspberry pi

>no youtube

> using jewtube

Xiaomi mibox is a better choice if you want something more useful

for $20 why the fuck not
though if you want YouTube you should get a Chromecast for a bit more
unless you're a really dedicated pirate a Raspi setup isn't really worth the money and especially not the time

thanks for the comments so far, goys

you can use youtube......use silk browser same ui as old youtube app....

it's shit don't bother

Just do it.

I got one and I honestly think it was a mistake. Very low specs, shitty performance, no apps that you'd care about, and alexa is gay (literally).

Can you cast to one of these things from a phone or similar

lmao you can half ass it with a paid app after hacking it but the experience of doing so on that dual-core processor from WW2 is like watching paint dry.

Oof.
Honestly I should just get a new computer or a laptop or something. It's been too many years since I had something that functioned decently.

>No YouTube
Get anything else desu

What about the larger non-stick version that's $35?

>Using Dailymotion

no OP but i have a raspberry pi i dont use anymore. used it for retropi but i hardly play it now.

what should i get for it to turn it into a media center thing?

you can watch youtube on it....goddammit...just use silk browser...

it behaves just like the youtube app...they made it just for it...

Or just download the fucking youtube apk.

Every user in this thread is fucking retarded.
It's fine, OP.

Why bother with these when you can get a chinabox for 20-30 bucks that plays 1080p, 60-90 bucks that plays 4k?

Mind the PJ Mask. My 4 year old watches it.

Nobody recommended Roku? It's still the best and not much more expensive. Has YouTube and almost every other major service.

>not using dailymotion

i have amazon prime, so amazon prime video is good for me

prime video is good for no one.

Uncle bought one but later found out that it doesn't support Netflix. Did they release an update supporting Netflix and other programs or would the RPi just act like a simple HTPC streaming video from home network/server?

Is this the prime thread? I'm looking for some new headphones, but can't find shit except wireless garbage.

Don't really have a budget, but it's a sale and would get something on sale.

This. Use Roku with Netflix/Sling TV/Pluto TV and fuck everything else into the stoneage. There are even streaming services the same as Watchseries and other services for watching movies that are literally still out. If you have a good wifi signal you can't go wrong with a Roku.

Raspberry pi can’t play Netflix ever because it is protected by DRM which is not ported to Linux. It can only run in Chromium because of widevine. Any other situation, it won’t play. If you want streaming services, a raspberry pi is the worst option you can get.

Chromecast sucks because you have to use another device (phone) to control it instead of a comfy remote.

Roku is probably better if you don't want Alexa spyware in your home. Also Youtube works on it, as do some other apps missing on the firetv platform.

I currently have a Roku 3 and just got a Roku Stick for my living room TV. Hopefully it's powerful enough for 1080p plex

if you have 5ghz wifi, this garbage will not connect in some of the channels, so you have to force the channel in the router for this piece of shit to connect to 5ghz reliably
yes, it is known
yes, they don't care
other than that, the hardware is nice, and it is cheap af

>AvE

Skookum as frig

You can sideload tererrium for TV shows and movies along with Mobdro for livestreams of cable channels.

Easy peasy you chump
smartyoutubetv.github.io/

go for it, for $20 you can't go wrong
youtube does work btw,

Yeah, he got one wanting to make a streaming service. Then we figured out hardly anything works on it aside from being a PLEX or similar player. He's making it into a jukebox now it seems.

I did the same thing with the Pi 1 when it came out so you’re not alone. I bought 2 more Pi3’s because I like to tinker and make little hobby projects, but indeed, they do fail as a streaming service box. They excel via Kodi with simple HTTP/FTP streams from sites like Crunchyroll, Kisscartoon and stuff and Plex, but any legitimate service either doesn’t work or sucks ass on it.

Works on my machine™

I removed the Amazon bloat from one I was gifted and installed TerrariumTV on it. Just werks.

Is TerrariumTV like a dedicated APK alternative to the Exodus plugin for Kodi or something?

If you don't need 4K, yes. I like mine, wish it had more storage though so i could torrent on it instead of needing to use Stremio.
Works just fine in the browser

It's basically a direct-download search engine for Google Video, Openload, etc. Grabs details and posters from IMDb. It just works out of the box and doesn't need a VPN or anything extra. just use Blockada to remove all the ads.

source for the apk:

apkmirror.com/apk/terrarium-tv/

Yeah so it’s just an app that does the same thing. Good to know, Exodus and that one remake of it stopped working because they got their code DMCA’d so Terrarium would be handy

mine overheats in the summer.
i actually had to remove the plastic cover and attach two heatsinks to it and have a fan blowing cool air on it

Is it the first generation? That sounds like a hardware issue

I like it but I o my use it for netflix, YouTube, and the biggest reason is Kodi unlimited TV shows, movies, porn.

probably, its pretty old
