You can't have ownership over a sequence of machine instructions. It's like owning a mathematical theorem, or a cooking recipe. A program is a series of steps. Once one person discovers it, you can't just prevent anyone from entering the same steps into their machine to get the same result. So there really is no concept of ownership of a computer program. They could try to keep the instructions secret but your machine will have to know them eventually in order to run them. You could just disassemble them or run them through a debugger.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX. Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Because it is free to use and open source anybody can help develop it. Linux is so successful because there are more people developing it essentially. There are a ton of forums filled with people with lots of knowledge of the Linux kernel and everything else about it. With Windows or other propriety closed source OSes you have to contact the main devs directly and because there are fewer of them chances are the help you will receive will be of lower quality and the time it takes for the problem to be resolved and a patch to be released will be much longer.
The philosophy behind FOSS is that by making something FOSS it means that anybody can help to develop it. Which is why we have shit like github. While it's true if Linus/RMS was a fucking jew like OP he could've capitalised off of linux and made a few shekels. However it would not have been as successful as it is today because most of the reasons why people use linux is because it's free and also because of the innovations that other people implemented as a result of it being open source.
