Hive City

Is it possible to create a city that is even more densely populated than Kowloon Walled City?

it would be possible
the problems include and are not limited to
extreme risk, cost, decreasing rent, diseases.
also it would be heaven for terrorists properly placed explosives on the lower levels could level big parts of the city

The thought of Kowloon always scared me like a nightmare.
Shadowrun Hong Kong did a good job of portraying it in this aspect,
where daily life is a literal nightmare.

Yes, if the hive would have only living quarters. Kowloon had shops of all kind and they took up living space.
But it would be a pure hell on earth to live there.
Pic related is what comes remotely close to Kowloon, Chungking Mansions.
The modernized, cleaner version of cowloon. Id love to visit it someday, its so comfy, for some reason.

Still it somehow fascinates me. I wouldn't want to live in it, but being a tourist would be awesome. Of course with local security guys by my side. I dont want to be kidnapped.

Speaking of games, there is a small team that develops a game, where you explore Kowloon a s a cat.

Being kidnapped is your last concern here. You should worry about rats and cockroach.

I handled pet rats of friends, no problem. Wild rats are also harmless, Just dont corner them, they always go out of your way. Roaches are annoying, but id rather deal with pests than being kidnapped by a triade.

A month or so ago I posted pages from the pic related book. If anyone remembers, I've stopped half way through. You can find those here:

I will now continue.

Thank you user, you are doing gods work. I read this book 2 years ago, also found it on some pirate site. But i googled for it today and apperently they made a new one, City of darkness revisited. Have you heard about this one? how is it?

I know about it, but haven't gotten my hands on one, sorry. It's certainly not scanned yet. From the description it sounds like the author added more photos and written material.

These balconies are nice, if you notice they are actually built out of cages and stick out of the building.

Just move to chungking mansions you twat.
Before doing so watch the following movies:

Chungking Express, Fallen Angels.

Checked. No worries user, yeah it takes time, i also had to search a bit for proper scans of the first book.
These balcony huts were more expensive than ones with no acces to sunlight at all. I understnad that the cages were needed to stop burglars from climbing in, but i would hang my clothes on the cage outside, to clear up the view. Or are they blocking the suns heat on purpose with their clothes?

Star of a Wong Kar-wai movie and an icon of urban Hong Kong, Chungking Mansions is too often portrayed as unsafe and a den of vice. Don’t believe a word of it – or you’ll be missing out on some of the city’s best Indian food

Depends in which kind to be honest.

Well, it still is de facto cleaner than the kowloon corridors.
