ive been using avast for the past few years but it's been getting shittier and shittier with ad spam as well as epic """features""" such as breaking SSL encryption, it's gotten to the point where it fucking gives you ads for its private browsing bullshit whenever you go on a porn site
what should i switch to? i've heard windows defender is decent but im not sure if that's true or if it's just a meme.
i already do use common sense but i like having an antivirus for the peace of mind since im autistically paranoid about malware
Andrew Murphy
An antivirus can make your system more secure because it increases your computer's attack surface. Stop downloading cutetrapshowsherfemininepenis.jpg.exe and you'll be fine.

I like bitdefender

ESET + MBAM is what I have, lightweight and unobtrusive.

>it increases your computer's attack surface what the literal fuck?
This makes zero sense

In order of effectiveness and price: Paid: Kaspersky Free: Avast Libre: ClamAV (ClamWin)
Why do you use an OS that is prone to viruses? Wouldn't it make more sense, if viruses are a worry for you, to run an OS that isn't prone to viruses? Of course, there are people who will tell you that these OSs are just as vulnerable, but ask the people who use them. I run Anti-Virus software on my Windows PCs but not on my *nix boxes. In 10 years no infections.

just don't run sexygirls.exe as administrator and you'll be fine.

>Dude, just use common sense lmao >Don't download viruses bruh >Stop using windows Wow, this is a great thread full of relevant, informative and interesting responses.
>i already do use common sense but i like having an antivirus for the peace of mind since im autistically paranoid about malware Then install Gentoo.
Anthony Long
What did you expected? Also new MS Windows versions are equipped with some AV tool... And I've to admit, it works quite good. My mom didn't got any porn banner after updating her 7 to 10.

>main OS Xubuntu so no antivirus and no service running, all ports closed. >gamymen OS Windows 10. Just install updates and use windows defender that's good enough.
Evan Barnes
Windows Defender is fine, there's literally no reason to install another antivirus program for the purpose of general protection. If you're a big enough moron to ignore its warnings when it catches something and force a virus through regardless of it screaming at you, none of those other programs would help you either.
Juan Bailey
this actually makes a lot of sense if you're not a brainlet

This, that is if you can, but in business environments, small to enterprise, Webroot is the superior product.
Ian Baker
Malwarebytes cleaned up my computer. Had a shit ton of trojans worms and rootskits, keyloggers and adware before i ran a malwarebytes scan
Nathaniel Martin
Windows Defender/Microsoft Security Essentials. Everything else is a bloated meme.
Dominic Miller
but windows defender is bloated. The true king of minimal resource use is webroot
Sebastian Price
More software == more attack surface. Example of such a vulnerable attack surface:
>A remote code execution vulnerability exists when the Microsoft Malware Protection Engine does not properly scan a specially crafted file, leading to memory corruption, aka "Microsoft Malware Protection Engine Remote Code Execution Vulnerability.
Grayson Phillips
If you're so stupid that you manage to download AND run viruses, you deserved it. I don't run an antivirus. I just have virustotal uploader and that's all you need. If you see some exe shady, right click and upload to virustotal.
