I was even thinking about getting a pair for myself because while I have plenty of open back headphones I love I've yet to find a good portable but IEMs are just so much more portable than any headphone it's a hard choice.

As someone who has on-ears i gotta say, don't buy it unless you are absolutely sure you will love the sound, because on-ears in general leave a lot to be desired when it comes to comfort.

I got the 80 Ohm version too. The 80 Ohm version seemed to be the right pick based on what cable I want, what I hope to power them from and the sound signature. I usually go for open designs, I hope I'll like these.

My x2 are pretty ok for when it is hot and I'm thinking of getting some closed back headphones with velour pads. Not sure if they will get hot or not though.

I want to use the DT770s at work. Music mostly, though obviously some meetings and shit like that as well. Music and decent isolation are what count to me, that's why I wanted to go for a closed headphone despite generally preferring open designs. I hear the sub-bass is nice and that they're also comfy, that's nice as well.

Those are all there. I listen to music with a lot of sub bass and it's nice.

Some people don't like the treble, it doesn't bother me.

How are you supposed to get a good seal with stax when the headband is so loose and the fucking earpads are rectangular?

It's an open design anyway, you're not getting a seal period.

The treble is what I'm worried about honestly. I'm pretty sensitive to it and find it fatiguing pretty quickly if it's over-emphasized or too piercing, especially if I want to turn the volume up to anything beyond normal listening level. I hope the DT770s will work out for me.

You should be fine as long as it's things like claps, snaps, snares, hats and cymbals. Solid tone might hurt.

The 80 Ohm driver is said to have less extended treble. The ultimate test will be your ears.

Nothing at sensible prices. Matching HD650’s smooth tonality is a difficult job, and there’s nothing that is just like ”HD650 but better”.

If I had to name something, I’d say Mrspeakers Aeon Flow is also relaxed and it’s more technically adept than HD650, but it’s very hard to say whether the sound signature is what you’re looking for. Of course, there are always Staxes, HD800, Focal Clear etc. overall excellent high end headphones, but they tend to be more aggressive and/or trebly than HD650s.

Asked this in the other thread but only got one response: are the HD650/6xx's good without an amp? I'll be listening through my iPhone SE which has a low output impedance. Am I better off sticking with my HD558 (HD598 clone basically) if I don't want to buy an amp?

My HD650s sound fine without an amp, straight from my motherboard and they do get loud enough as well. From my OnePlus 5T volume needs to be at like 60-70% for normal listening level, at home in a quiet room. There's not much headroom there and the phone definitely can't drive them very loud. Same for my old Nexus 5 IIRC. Sound quality is OK though. Never had an iPhone SE to test though.

If it's any comfort I had the same concern, and it turned out okay.

At first I did have some intermittent discomfort but I later found that to be simply psychosomatic.

I have another headphone (Superlux HD668B) which is supposedly a bit loud on the treble side but for some reason they don't bother me, while other things most certainly do. I'm not sure exactly why, I hope the DT770s won't bother me either. The frequency response actually looks somewhat similar beyond the way better bass extension on the 770s.

Yup! Nothing wrong w/770s - clean and clear with a belly punch of bass. And they're one of the more comfortable closed backs I own.
Granted, the 1990s do that WITH way more detail, but they're $500 more. Rock on, Jamming some Corrosion of Conformity to knock the dust off 'em. These 770s probably have 5,000+ hours on em, and they're looser than a $10 hooker - soundin' GOOD!

audio basics 101: bass extension in headphones is determined by seal. audezes have flat bass due to their seal. stax with a seal have flat bass. dynamics with a seal have flat bass.
