Using Arch or Gentoo doesn't make you cool, user. What qualifies as the best distro is highly subjective (as OP didn't specify any criteria). If somebody values ease of use, then a mainstream distro will certainly rank higher than something like Arch or Gentoo.

mint in particular (Ubuntu is almost to the point where you may as well use windows) is great as an OS for new users to get to grips with basic Linux concepts like the terminal and file system in a package that justwerks™

What you mean manually? Traditional ie nu-Arch style? You can do that (wiki.voidlinux.eu/Installation_via_chroot), as any other distro basically, but it also comes with a TUI, ie old-Arch or Debian style, that guides you through the process (wiki.voidlinux.eu/Installation).

Idunno man, Debian netinstall was pretty quick and I had XFCE out of the box, maybe it's just that I'm not too deep in the meme yet but I don't see a point in using Arch with i3.
