Need laptop for college

>need laptop for college
>been looking at laptops for months
>everything has at least 1 major flaw that makes me not want it
>can never decide on anything
>I only have 2 weeks left

This is starting to piss me off. I keep looking at stuff but everything involves making big sacrifices. I just want:
>something that's at least mildly professional looking
>good build quality, either easy to repair of hard to break
>has lots of ports
>has a numpad
>preferably 15"
>has a gpu, preferably 1060 or better (I'm willing to use an eGPU since I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop in public. I can do that at my desk.)

I've looked at so much stuff but I have a problem with everything.
>>Thinkpad P52
>Quadro GPU might not run games as well as I want it to
>no access to GeForce Experience or GeForce drivers
>>Thinkpad P52s + eGPU
>4-core processor, only 1.9GHz, will likely bottleneck
>>Razer Blade 15
>Gaymen Shit
>bad experiences with the company in the past
>gets really hot
>no numpad
>few ports
>>XPS 15
>1050ti won't run games as well as I would prefer
>no numpad
>>pretty much any gaming laptop
>ugly design
>bad build quality, usually has lots of flex
>awful keyboard/trackpad
>no numpad
>bulky

Are my expectations just too high? I've been trying to decide on something for months and its just seems impossible. Do you have any advice Jow Forums?

>>need laptop for college
>>Quadro GPU might not run games as well as I want it to
why do you need it to run games? it's a college work laptop, just play games on your desktop/console

Get a fucking MacBook and a Nintendo Switch and go out and party at night.

Be normal. Shit when I was in comp sci I didn’t even have a laptop and took notes on paper.

Drop the absurd GPU requirement, trust me. I tried that and laptop + desktop is a much better experience.
>4-core processor, only 1.9GHz, will likely bottleneck
At what? What task do you plan on doing where a quad core at 2GHz will bottleneck?
>1050Ti won't run games as well as I would prefer
No business-looking laptop will run games the way you want them. Get a desktop.
>No numpad
Good. Homerow is where it belongs.

hey

Literally use pencil and paper it's a better way to learn anyway

Asus' gayman laptops are a bit gaudy and fucking comedically overpriced, but the build quality is fairly good and the percormance is adequate. It's an option if you really MUST have a laptop to game on.

But the far better option is getting a decent desktop and a scrappy little laptop to take notes and other minimalist shit on. Your daily browser doesn't need to be a monstrous workhorse.

I bought my ~$2,000 Asus laptop when I started college and really regret that choice. A $150 basic-ass laptop would have sufficed for class, and a $1,850 desktop would have run circles around my Asus, and been more future proof to boot.

Don't be dumb.

Maybe this will have something you like?

go with your gut. make a list of all your laptops and set a timer for 10 seconds. thats how much time you have to choose a laptop.
trust me user, it werkz, and youll realize that some of your issues aren't as bad or important as you thought they were when you were overthinking your options.

>Are my expectations just too high?
Yes. Just get a goddamn laptop and use it for school.

God you’re a fucking idiot. Just buy Eluktronics P650HP6 VR Ready Gaming Laptop - Intel Core i7-7700HQ Quad Core Windows 10 Home 6GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 15.6 Full HD IPS 512GB Performance SSD 16GB DDR4 RAM amazon.com/dp/B01MT7P0QJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_JWrwBb4E71234

I’ve been using it for over a year with no problems. It’s pretty compatible with Linux too.

It would be very convenient for me to leave my desktop at home and use a laptop for gaming and schoolwork.
>go out and party at night.
Look, I understand that social interaction is important but I don't think its unreasonable, unhealthy or abnormal to want to play video games sometimes. I had an active social life in high school and don't expect that to change in college. You get friends from being an interesting person and being fun to be around not from owning a macbook and going to parties. I'm sorry that you gave up your hobbies in order to fit in :(
I need to be able to run Autodesk Inventor and Visual studio. I also may have to take an online class eventually which will be much easier on a laptop.
Thanks for the suggestions anons, I'll give them a look.

>ref
No

Stop playing videogames.

>has lots of ports
What sort of ports? What are you plugging in?
>has a numpad
Why?
>has a gpu
Also why?
>I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games
Well what do you need the GPU for?
>on their laptop in public.
Oh no...
>I can do that at my desk.
Yikes. Major manchild alert. You're going to college, man. You shouldn't still be playing video games like a loser...

Just buy a desktop laptop combo. Gaming laptops are still a meme. But if you really want one look into gigabyte aero and high end surface book 2s

>needs to run visual studio
fellas, he basically needs a gaming laptop for this, let's be honest

All i want is a laptop with a 2700u, 25w+ TDP, and a 15inch screen/numpad. ideally from a less-shit manufacturer but whatever

doesnt exist, i blame intel for oem coercion.

>yikesposter calling anyone else a loser
y i k e s

Know that feel, user. The only thing that fits me to replace my ageing Acer netbook is a HP Probook EE. Good luck finding one of those with a real hard disk (and not the shitty SSD) in Ausfagia for less than five times what I paid for this thing, though.

autodesk software should run on most integrated graphics (unless you do simulation)
visual studio just needs ram

>auto desk and vs
Just buy old thinkpad and play games at home

>>has a numpad
why
>>has a gpu, preferably 1060 or better (I'm willing to use an eGPU since I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop in public. I can do that at my desk.)
WHY
>>Quadro GPU might not run games as well as I want it to
Check benchmarks. There's really no reason to just wonder about this. If there isn't a benchmark for the quadro, look up what consumer GPU it's comparable to.

lad if you want to fit in with everyone else just buy a refurbished macbook air.
>gayming
then buy a pc with the rest lol

Pretty much in the same boat.

>Fuck Intel and their bugs
>Simple raven ridge APU, fuck gay men. ( No Homo )
>Camera and mic on a normal place, not the bottom of the screen or a mic inside the chassis.
>dont care about numpad
>dont care about muh easy to repair, unless I have to mod the laptop heavely to be usefull.
>Ethernet port as I dont know how good ethernet ports work with USB

>decent screen and battery.
>nvme m.2 SSD.
>A bios that doesn't make me want to KMS.

Last three I can mod myself if neccecairy. Lenovo has a new listing with pretty much everything I want but dont know any release date.

>>XPS 15
1050ti won't run games as well as I would prefer
>I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop
?

>lad if you want to fit in with everyone else just but a MacBook air
It's am engineering college. Only the women use MacBooks. Most the men use Lenovo and Dell.
I wasn't using that to try to say that I needed a powerful laptop I was trying to say that pencil and paper wouldn't suffice
>why have a numpad
I prefer using it to type in long strings of numbers. Having an off-centered keyboard does not bother me.
>check benchmarks
I have. A quadro p3200 is approximately equivalent to a gtx 1060, however you do not get access to GeForce drivers which help with performance a lot.
>taking things out of context
Add "in public" to your quotation

At this point I just want something with a good processor that I can slap an eGPU on that's like $1000-1700.

>I don't like gayman shit
>but I need a laptop for gaymen
Laptops aren't for playing gaymes. If you need a collage laptop than just buy a T or X series thinkpad and use the rest of the cash to buy a desktop for your gaymes, it's literally meant to do that one job.

>asking about laptop for college
>obviously trying to put together a gaming laptop

get a fucking chromebook and remote into a lab computer if you need to run specialist applications or high-CPU processes. then suck enough cock to put together a gaming desktop.

>all this normalfag virtue signaling while still wanting gaymen
stop trying to fit in so hard, kill yourself op

>2018
>implying normalfags don't like gaymen shit now

>I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop in public
>but i want muh vidya

Avoid Lenovo, Chinese botnet with a new hardware-level security flaw discovered every few months

Yes. At my desk or with friends. Both of which are relatively normal. Doing it anywhere else is for manchildren.

video games are for children

>unnecessarily complicating your life because you are enslaved to video games

release it from your life, break free of the yoke of gaming

I personally recommend you get both a desktop and a cheap laptop

>you do not get access to GeForce drivers which help with performance a lot.
This is a nothingburger. I've got a P71 with a Quadro P4000 and a P51 with a Quadro M2200 and they both can play vidya just fine; Hell, I even use gamestream from the P71 which works just fine. The only thing you should know (not sure is this is true for the P52, but same chassis) is that the P51 gets kinda loud under load.

Thanks this is helpful but what games do you run on it exactly?

Give me a bit and I can run some benchmarks.

Thank you touhou poster. I'm mainly worried about running Monster Hunter World when it comes out next month. Most other things I play are pretty low profile and shouldn't have trouble running.

>>something that's at least mildly professional looking
Drop this.

stop watching porn*

Aero 15x

>Monster Hunter World
>on any laptop, gaming or not
get a god damn ps4 or go back to

Have you checked out Gigabyte laptops? The Aero 15 should suit your needs, not really the most professional looking but looks much more understated than most other gaymen laptops

I mean to be fair it's not THAT important because when I eventually need a work computer it'll likely be provided by my job. It's just that I can't stand Useless, guady lighting and other common design trends in gaming devices.
Monster Hunter World runs at 30fps on ps4 and you have to pay for online
I'll look into it thanks user

>I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop in public. I can do that at my desk.
You're a manchild for wanting LE GAY MEN laptop in the first place
Kill yourself

Attached: 1532557879728.gif (242x227, 1015K)

yeah, and it would run very hot, very loud, or run like crap on a laptop. Buy it for a desktop, then get a crapbox laptop and stream the game to your laptop.

Just dont do college and spare money!

>touhou poster
>calling someone else a manchild
To be fair I'm not oppose to the idea of just playing less intensive stuff on my laptop and just waiting for summer to play big AAA releases on my desktop at home, or even just driving home and getting my desktop whenever something my laptop can't run comes out, and bringing it back home when I don't need it.

Why not keep the desktop with you at your dorm or apartment?

>thanks a touhou poster earlier
>calls a later one a manchild
*snap*

Attached: 1532565110629.jpg (399x527, 70K)

I'm considering it but transferring it between home and school over break could get annoying but I'm not sure yet.
The touhou poster before was cool. The second one was a hypocritical fagboy.

I did that when I was in college. It was tougher because I transferred two monitor with it, other wise it wasn't that hard to move.

Just take the P52, you aren’t in college to gayme, focus on your studies and the quadro will be enough.

Well I'm planning on using an external monitor when using a desk even with a laptop.

Have you thought about Microsoft book 2? It's pretty expensive, but it's pretty sturdy. Really decent specs, too. Only problem with it is price and windows 10. Although if you're willing to void the warranty, you can just install linux

It's nice but I'm not a big fan of the keyboard and hinge

Don't listen to any of these fucking idiots that have never owned a decent laptop before. I'm currently rocking a G751 that I landed for $800 and have owned others in the past. Get an aero 15x with the liquid metal option from here

hidevolution.com/gigabyte-aero-15x-8v-bk4-1070.html

Dell G5?

I don't even want a gaming laptop and still can't find anything worth buying, everything is shit. Also, being in Canada means my options are limited in who will ship to me, even Lenovo's website looks shady as fuck with their 3 weeks estimated ship dates, fuck off. Amazon Canada selection is absolute shit.

>autodesk inventor
Get a desktop. The certified hardware list for mobile GPUs is a shitshow. You'll want a big screen anyway.
>visual studio
wtf, just get something with lots of RAM and an SSD. visual studio will run on a laptop made out of cardboard and string.

See:>I wasn't using that to try to say that I needed a powerful laptop I was trying to say that pencil and paper wouldn't suffice

> has a gpu, preferably 1060 or better
> I'm not some sort of manchild who plays games on their laptop
Pick one

cumstained used ebay thinkpads are a Jow Forums meme for a reason user

>need laptop for college
You don’t NEED a laptop and you don’t NEED to go to college

>not having basic reading comprehension
Yeah but I WANT a good job and college is a very good way of going about it.

You need a laptop for college. Get a laptop suited for college. Why do you need to play games as good as a desktop?

>Yeah but I WANT a good job and college is a very good way of going about it.
Don’t listen to your boomer school and your boomer parents

What job do you have user?

I don’t have a job

>Bought a x230 for $60
Came with no HDD and the battery only holds 80%, but for the price thats fine. Bought a cheapo 128GB SSD and installed Debian and it just werks.

Might waste a bunch of money on spare battery, charger, and maybe dock.
