Running an imageboard

How do you run an imageboard without getting v&? Is it worse than it was a decade ago?

Stop asking this question everyday. It's very obvious you're shilling something.

Host in Russia, or do what moot did and collect user info to sell to the feds in exchange for immunity

>Stop asking this question everyday.
Wasn't me.

Fuck yourself anyway

>the feds
>paying for user info

I dont wanna be mean but what makes you think people here know shit about it here?

I wanted to do the same back in 2011 when 9gag and the others normies sites exploded becauses heey maymays were popular all of the sudden.

Nowadays it would be absurdly easier due to shit like amazon and google clouds but you gotta have some people watching over all the shit that's being uploaded because i can bet you my dick these companies have AI monitoring every single file hosted on their servers and can easily identify shit like CP.

Im a 26yo boomer who never had the guts to actually try his ideas, the one and only advice I'd give you is FUCKING TRY IT wether u fail or not it doesnt matter just TRY IT!!

>Im a 26yo boomer
do you even know what a boomer is?

It's a meme, lurk more.
Sure you could get in trouble for CP but if you have a couple mods watching over it you should be fine. It's not like you would get much traffic anyway being an obscure imageboard. It's not different than an old school php forum, these have image upload too and there are a shit ton of them dedicated to obscure interests all over the internet.

>you gotta have some people watching over all the shit that's being uploaded

If the risk is getting v& it kinda does.

>How do you run an imageboard without getting v&?
don't allow illegal content
its really not that hard

Boomers know no age. Boomers aren't a generation; nay, quite the contrary--being a boomer is a lifestyle.

>implying you'll need to worry about people posting cp
>implying you'll need to worry about people posting at all

Host it on some third world nation or the moon.

I think most people have given up on creating new bulletin board websites since 8ch (and Endchan) kills the need to create individual bulletin board websites in a similar vein that Reddit killed the need to create individual forum websites. However, 8ch has that poor reputation and Endchan is more of a literally who.

You probably won't find anybody who attacks your website unless you made it about something that some jokesters find easy to attack (e.g. politics, furry porn, etc.) and I have no clue on how people attract spambots to their boards.

There's also a very good chance that nobody will actually use your website, but don't let that discourage you if you're passionate enough.

There's a reason why Russian bulletin boards are hosted on .hk (Hong Kong) domains instead of actually on .ru (Russia) domains.

>domain
>implying that's where the server is hosted

sure, just look at all these

I did it from 2013 to 2017. It sucks. My board gained a lot of traffic after /sp/ left 8ch. Before that, I didn't have to do a lot of moderation, but after that I was on every day cleaning up spam, and I had a really "no rules" way of looking at it.
If you're really interested in it, you have two options as far as software goes. If you're okay with putting up with PHP, Vichan is good and offers a lot of customization. If you want something better but less full features simply because it's newer, Lynxchan is the way to go. I god kicked from 4 different hosts, but most of that was my fault. Generally, just get a VPS from some smaller provider who colocates at a big datacenter for reliability. I made friends with the last two admins of my providers, and they would post on 76chan as well. I was 14 and broke when I first made it, but every time I needed to pay for the server or domain, I would just run donation drives and people would actually donate. I eventually sold the website to some other user who fucked it up because he had no idea what he was doing, but at that point I was kind of done with it. I kind of miss running an imageboard, but I wouldn't try it again. If you have any questions give me an email or whatever and we can talk.

Not OP, but I too run a chan of my own country. Mind if I join?

>or the moon
Hamchan?

I ran a chan back in 2008~2010, it got flooded with CP posters and I couldn't be around 24/7 to delete it so I took it down.

Even with captcha and shit CP was posted and there were actual conversations going on.

>I have no clue on how people attract spambots to their boards
When I started a tiny little niche imageboard I got a deluge of spam almost immediately. The spam, it turned out, came from the operators of the one other imageboard about the same topic. They even admitted it later. There was no money in it. They just wanted to fuck with me because I was "on their turf".

i love it

as long as u actively remove illegal content u wont have any problems with authorites

Are there any "easy to run" ImageBoards?
I just want something for my dorm to post files and text.
Currently I'm using a python script to run an HTTP server with upload.

do it

Hi Deets

thats just discussion boards you idiots

and they were great

>I just want something for my dorm to post files and text.
Pretty much any imageboard that can use SQLite or no database at all will do. Apache/Nginx with PHP take 30 minutes to set up if you know basic Linux and can follow a guide.

>basic Linux and can follow a guide.
I know basic linux, it's the guides that don't exists.
I was hoping to get RPi0 for this as well.
>inb4 NAS
My dorm-mates aren't, how should I say this?
tech savvy.

this
literally no one uses alternative imageboards

The guides are plentiful. You need to level up your research skills. E.g., digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-install-linux-nginx-mysql-php-lemp-stack-ubuntu-18-04. Once you have these set up, deploy a PHP imageboard. You can can't manage this, try github.com/Floens/uchan/#docker-setup. I can't tell if it's good, but with Docker you won't have worry about manually configuring some of the things you usually need to.

*can't tell you if it's good

I run a small imageboard.
All you need is mods and a report system. Imageboards aren't illegal or anything.
You might also benefit from having a userbase or a couple friends who would post on it with you, but those are honestly more likely to be on discord, reddit or 8ch these days. The web is stupidly centralized now.

Are your mods your friends or did you recruit among the users?

You have discord? I'm yeltsew#2319
Not the user you're replying to (I'm ) but I did both on my site. I found that the ones who I recruited among the users were actually better mods than my friends because they cared about the well being of the site more, since they more actively used it.

Wtf, 30years old boomer here, since when people are afraid of creating their own imageboard... Back in my days, Internet was pretty FFA unless you hosted really sick shit... did the jews create some new laws to prevent people from having fun

ITT: Newfags shitpost about imageboards without naming a single imageboard.

Vichan, Lainchan (vichan), Wakaba, Futallaby, Tinyboard. If you want to live on the edge: Kusaba or KusabaX.

Really, 8gag is your example of another *chan? Come on, have you really not even heard of Lainchan? Hell, 420chan is still going strong too. There's wizchan too. Not to mention there's countless /jp/ spinoffs. Besides, there is a fuckton of non-english-speaking imageboards out there too: Futaba, 2ch.hk, ylilauta, hispachan, etc.

Lurk moar.

>There's wizchan too
Don't fucking namedrop us on this shithole website.

>If you want to live on the edge: Kusaba or KusabaX.
I have not heard that name in years...

>Endchan
It's been offline for a long, long time.

Which ones have good crypto currency boards, Jow Forums is shit.

There are so many large sites and so many places that allow you to post your own content, that people are afraid to build something of their own at the cost of their own money. People have no sense of adventure anymore, no want of doing something and seeing it to the end just so they can say they achieved something.

Or you can code your own.
It's really only the moderation panels that takes a shitload of time. The frontend is only problematic if you want shit ton of javascript features.

plus4chan is still around too, but only /co/ oldfags care about that. It has a better /aco/ board though.

7chan is also around, it has a pretty decent /b/ board from what I've seen.

You won't find one like that since crypto is so full of shills and pyramid schemes.

I just don't want to deal with the trouble that comes from moderating faggots spamming illegal shit

Please don't namedrop other boards, you just make it worse for them and their users.

Find a host that ignores the law and especially DMCA notices. 420chan thrives because of that, and because it is the only board discussing drugs. I wonder how fast they'd die if Jow Forums added a drug board though. /pco/ died nearly instantly once /aco/ came out, despite being a far better board.

On that note, does anyone know any good hosts that ignore DMCA and other similar laws?

Most other boards have no users to begin with.

>Most other boards have no users to begin with.
Good, let's keep it that way.

Both.

ITT: Pretend oldfag namedropping all the seven imageboards he knows

I posted endchan, not 8ch. You know full well that the number of effectively dead or literally dead imageboards outnumbers the number of sort-of-alive ones by a million.

>countless /jp/ spinoffs
Why do /jp/-related boards go all Sengoku Jidai, anyway?

I wish there were a place to talk about cryptocurrencies that was anonymous and strictly about the tech.

github.com/topics/imageboard

>/jp/
name me some /jp/ spinoff sites? I'm interested.

>wizchan
Never have I wanted to mass murder a group of people until I found that place a few months ago and read through a thread about humans in their thirties discussing installing locks on their room door in their parents house.

we're all waiting for you

No it hasn't. Only recently it gives error 500.
It was working fine like 3 weeks ago.

I'd rather have multiple equally active imageboards competing, than Jow Forums sucking and nothing else having any posters.

>lainchan
Why'd you have to namedrop on this stupid board?

>Why'd you have to namedrop on this stupid board?

Why does that even bother you?

Missing arisuchan

Because it brings in retards from this site
