Not needed for most websites anymore. The www is just a subdomain for the main website indicating the webserver. Now there's high availability and distributed webservers for load balancing and saying dl3.site.com vs dl4.site.com will work, but site.com works just as well and the browser and DNS entries understand you might get server 3, or server 4, but you don't have to explicitly say which one you want to hit.
